(shrug) Use the technique of thought experiment, a la "A Beautiful Mind."
An important, historical event is taking place. The sub requests the opportunity to watch it on TV.
Scenario A: The Dom forbids it. (because he thinks that denying the sub life expereinces is the only way to express his "power over" his sub.) The sub obeys but secretly resents it. She meets with friends and coworkers, who ask what she thought about this once in a lifetime event. The resentment grows. Eventually, multiple incidents like this accumulate and end up breaking them apart. She realizes the Dom is an asshat. Negative experience.
Scenario B: The Dom allows it, but makes certain that the sub knows the Dom considers it all silliness. (perhaps a price has to be paid for the relaxation of rules. Possible fun for both.) No harm done. Neutral experience.
Scenario C: Dom and sub watch the historical event together, and it becomes yet another shared experiance, which they can look back on as part of their "good times" together. In years to come, people will ask "where were you when?" and they will have a good memory of the time. Positive experience.
