I am wondering whether any of you have  experiences that lead you to believe emergency room doctors are retarded?

1.  Monday I broke my arm.  I went to the hospital.  They x rayed my arm .  The next thing I knew I was being given an IV and then shots were put into me by syringe, demoral.  The next thing they said in the words of a friend :  "You have bone cancer; you are going to die; probably horribly."  I was so high that the friend said that I didn't even blink; I smiled; and then said "should I be worried?"  Is this the appropriate way to break such news both in language and after doping  me up?

2.  The next thing I knew I was back in x ray.  They came back and said that my lungs had shadows.  I asked why they were x raying my lungs, the tumor was in my arm.  They responded that they had to make sure there was no other tumors.  I asked why.  There had been no biopsy of the tumor.  The said the arm was gross, ghastly, the worse they had ever seen.   After each assertion I simply said "but that doesn't make it cancerous" "I want a biopsy."  They said that they don't do it  that way and brought an itemized estimate for $10,000 relating to the tests  they were about to conduct.  I said that I was going to leave.  They knew that I didn't have insurance. The situation became nasty.  They sent down someone who asked if I knew how serious this was.  I left.

I spoke to my doctor and she said we could not treat it as if it was benign.  I asked why not, the tumor has never been biopsied. After outlining $4,300.00 of tests and saying that since I was never going to work again  I could get Medicare, she suddenly looked up and said "perhaps it should be biopsied, but the x ray is so gross."  She called the orthopedic surgeon referral who had the x ray.   The next thing I knew was that my doctor and x were in each others arms crying.  "It is benign according to the orthopod."  He removes them routinely.  This one was egregious but not cancer in his opinion 99.99%  However, the tumor extends from my hand into my forearm and the pressure led to the forearm breaking.  The tumor has made the bones honey combed and has eaten away portions of bone.  But, it is not cancer.

If I had allowed the fools to run all those tests based on a benign tumor I would be broke for a long time.  Why not biopsy the tumor before ordering all the tests?

After the fiasco I spoke with others and the number of horror stories about emergency rooms are scary.

I was waiting for the punch line.  The only part I believe of this little tale is that you went to the hospital with a broken arm. Perhaps the rest was a demerol-induced delusion.

Unfortunately it happened.  I am having surgery on the benign tumor Friday.  What is troubling is that the stories I have been told by others are much worse.  One episode related to an attorney who had back surgery and removal of an organ when he had a hip injury.  Your answer leads me to believe that you are either in the health industry or the insurance industry both being a play on words. The other episode that was especially interesting was a judge's father who was sent home to die because of cancer when he had a staph infection.

Probably because most (if not all) biopsies are *extremely* invasive compared to doing the other tests.

You're more likely to need *less* healing time if it's benign, and if they can find if it's cancerous without it saves you the money (and trauma) of a biopsy.

Makes sense to me, though why they didn't listen to you (and doped you up before talking to you about it) doesn't.

I've only been to the ER a few times, only one was an extremely horrible experience due to doctor incompetence... though even then, it was really because it was a 'teaching hospital' so I was being helped by people who WANTED to be medical professionals, not necessarily medical professionals.

I am also a disbeliever of this story. If the tumor was that large, why did you take so long to have it looked at? Go to a specialiast, not ER at the last moment. These things don't grow overnight..

Okay, fine then, we'll start right here.  The word "retarded" means having a low IQ.  Emergency room physicians must, at the minimum, have a degree of higher learning and pass a test.  A person with such a low IQ as to be deemed "retarded" would have neither.

quote:

1.  Monday I broke my arm.  I went to the hospital.  They x rayed my arm .  The next thing I knew I was being given an IV and then shots were put into me by syringe, demoral.

Demerol caused me to have delusions and say things that made no sense.

quote:

The next thing they said in the words of a friend :  "You have bone cancer; you are going to die; probably horribly."

Okay, my mistake.  I believe your friend was delusional.  I do not believe that any medical professional told you that you were going to die, "probably horribly."

quote:

I asked why they were x raying my lungs, the tumor was in my arm.  They responded that they had to make sure there was no other tumors.  I asked why.  There had been no biopsy of the tumor.

Because the tumor was so apparent that they needed to see if it had spread.

quote:

The said the arm was gross, ghastly, the worse they had ever seen.   After each assertion I simply said "but that doesn't make it cancerous"

Again, I don't believe they said it was "gross" or "ghastly".  Those are emotion-laden, histrionic words.  I do believe, however, that they said it was the worst they had ever seen.  And yes, there are tumors that don't need biopsy to determine if they are cancerous.

quote:

She called the orthopedic surgeon referral who had the x ray.   The next thing I knew was that my doctor and x were in each others arms crying.  "It is benign according to the orthopod."  He removes them routinely.  This one was egregious but not cancer in his opinion 99.99%

Nope, don't believe that one either.  Some things are so obviously cancer, but the reverse is not true, AND you would not get that opinion from a surgeon.

quote:

The tumor has made the bones honey combed and has eaten away portions of bone.  But, it is not cancer.

Again, they cannot tell that it is NOT cancer until it is biopsied.

But hey, you'll have surgery this week, you'll know if it's cancerous or not after the surgery.   Hopefully not at the same hospital as you went to for this problem.

I am sure that if you check with your hospital, the Doctors in the emergency room did much more than get a minimal degree and pass a test. You will find that all of them have a minimum of 8 years of training. ER Doctors usually add a couple more to deal with the hundreds of different injuries they see each and every week..

The only person who sounds retarded in this story is your friend. I'm guessing they paraphrased in a really, really stupid way, because doctors don't talk like that. Anyways, good luck with your surgery.

No emergency room physician I've ever been in contact with, both as a co-worker and as a patient, have ever been "retarded".   Some of the patients, however.....

Oh, and since describing your medical condition in such detail to a "friend" without your written consent majorly violates HIPAA regulations, and since medical staff are pretty tidy about keeping themselves out of lawsuits, I also question your story.

You are a lucky person.  Count your blessings and thank your God.

I thank God for the men and women who are trained in doing thorough ER procedures.  Four years ago my wife passed out at home and we rushed her to the hospital.  Among the tests done was a "chest x-ray" which confused the hell out of me.  The doctor came back saying that it was probably nothing but strongly suggested we see our family doctor.  Bottom line, we went for more x-rays and there was a shadow, a pet scan revealed more definition of the tumor.  You don't really know for sure until you do a biopsy.  It was decided to do a needle biopsy but that could not be done due to the location behind the ribs of the tumor.  She was admitted to the hospital and the plan was to go in and take a sample on the operating table and go from there.  It was a Class 1 malignant tumor on her lung and half her lung was removed.  If that ER Doctor had not been so thorough in his exam that tumor would have quietly grown to life ending size as most lung cancer is not detectable until it is too late.
No...I would never call an ER doctor "retarded" but unsung hero's everyday doing a job complex job that people don't appreciate.

Hmmmmmm, my brother is retarded (developmentally delayed in certain aspects of learning, yet excels in others)
Perhaps I should rush him off to med school so he can help repair all those retarded people who break their arms.

I was trying to point out how ridiculous the OP's question was, but yes, you are correct.

I dont care for alot of tests myself.

ER Drs are (many) actually in training.  But they are not really there to do things the even a full DR does. Much of THAT is done by specialists.

Is it possible you are taking out your ailment onto others?   How do you respond to opiates?

It is important to be able to function with your primary care DR.

...if you had demoral- you cant just leave via driving-

um...the docs that train in ERs always have another experienced and veteran doctor to watch over them. I had a huge laceration in my arm a few years ago, and the resident took one look and got her attending. Most docs that are full trauma docs and spend all their time in the ER are jack of all trades, but very very damn good at what they do. Plus I'd rather have tests done to make sure than not know or have my moron GP (and he is a moron) look at something and say uh huh..interesting. heres some pills.

Somehow I doubt that the doctor and the xray tech were 'in each other's arms crying", and that's only one of the few things that popped out at me. Either you, or your friend is a pathological lier.

Absolutely none. Overworked and under appreciated, always.

I'm pretty  much had the same thoughts as CalifChick.

Or you need to move, and ASAP.

Because to have a staff that incompetent and panic spreading would have to mean the entire medical board is "retarded" as well, plus other assorted various staff, family members.  I mean we're not just talking a few here... It's a spreading epidemic at this point.

Anywhoo....

that sounds like a physician assistant.

in light of ERs closing down- and hospitals deleting the ER part- it is what it is what it is.  maybe some hospitals have state of the art everything- the one I go to doesn't.  but then it isnt a trauma hospital.    I go there because the wait at the other hospital is 4-5 maybe even 6 hours wait.

The guy I see for various ailments is a former ER doc. Tired of being under the thumb of the hospital, he started his own practice, geared towards people with little or no insurance.
Me, as well as my friends and family go to him instead of the ER... why?

Broken arm- patient had a little insurance- $0
Nail in the foot- Tetanus shot, removal of the nail, antibiotics, no insurance... either $45 or $55, I forget.
5 Stitches, meds- 55$

So... forgive me if I do not share your view on retarded doctors.

Care to explain this a little more?
quote:

What irriates me is various idiots going to the ER for stupid things. A cold can wait... go home and take a fricking tylenol.
