........he also delivered the message to Congress that it was time to stop playing childish partisan games.  He spoke of offering friendship to the world.
I think the words he said that will stick in the minds of many in other countries were to their leaders.  "You will be remembered for what you build, not what you destroy."  Those are words for leaders both present and future to live by.  If they do, the world will become a far better place.

This is one of many things that stuck out for me.  As these words were said, I had a teenager I was watching this with look at me and say "I wonder what Bush and Cheney are thinking right now".  We then went on to have a pretty lengthy discussion about the changes she wants to see with this new president. She was inspired, as am I, and isn't that a wonderful thing!
I'll admit, I reached for a couple of tissues during his speech.  I can only hope that after the hype has died down and it's time to get down to business that Americans continue to remember that it's up to all of us, not just the government, to facilitate change. Heck, I saw it today!

As well as these:

"we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals."

Did anyone hear the arrogant, self important ass they had on one of the news stations saying how he thought the speech should have been "more lofty?"  This was the greatest inaugural address in my nearly 38 years on the planet and he has the gaul to say that it wasn't up to his standards?  Where do they find these assholes?

Yes indeed!    I felt sorry for Bush sitting there, looking fairly uncomfortable, especially at the new president stating he planned to renew America's promise (without saying (this time), "which has been nearly destroyed").   M

When my daughter was born, i would tell people "You're looking at the first black president."  i am so glad he proved me wrong.

As cameras scanned the vast crowds , I  can't remember ever seeing so much joy in so many faces !
Too bad Martin Luther King Jr. wasn't around to witness it all - but then ,  he likely was - somewhere .
Right now my eyelids are all puffed up - as remaining dry eyed was nearly impossible - so I just happily sobbed away at every other scene , and words spoken !

And as much as Bushy screwed up , and made the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time he spoke -  I felt abit sad for him as he disappeared into the helicopter .  Yet it was most satisfying to know he's outta there !!!!

One moment that particularly struck me was the music played right after the taking of the Presidenital oath -  a jewish violinist ,  an oriental celloist ,  a hispanic pianist , and a black clarinet player - all playing the most beautiful music together .  Kind of a metaphor for how the world could  ( and may ) be !      [:)]

Amen! (or whatever choice of word/s one would prefer for "I am in total agreement and glad that this was said) I have been watching these speeches since Regan and this was the best i have seen. Serious kudos to his speech writers and to him for carrying it off so well.

Yeah, but don’t you think it was a bit rude of the crowd to start singing, “nah nah NAH nah!  Nah nah NAH na!  hey, Heeeeyyyy!  Goodbyyyyyeeeeee!” ?

Okay seriously folks, over all it was a good speech.  I liked the part about being judged by what you create, not what you destroy.  The only part I didn’t like about the inauguration was the Reverend who made the lines about yellow being mellow, red getting ahead and ending with white embracing what was right.  I found that rather insulting.  I would think Asians would find that insulting too (mellow?  What? Are you saying all Asians are hyperactive?).

lronitulstahp -> RE: Watch the inaugaration LIVE! (1/20/2009 11:45:56 AM)

Apparently Sen.Kennedy was stricken with convulsions at the luncheon...and Sen.Bird was wheeled out.  This inauguration is really rife with human emotion of all kinds.

I took it to mean that Yellow people are scared these days because us White people are so baaaaad to them all the time. Mean and terribly evil, so they're all jumpy.

I started collecting commerative special edition newspapers of Obama in November 2008.

I got up at 630 AM, and spent 2 hours this morning, and went to 6 different stores to get
several different newspapers.
Only one store STILL had  the "Washington Post" it is  my favorite secret store.

People were snatching them up like hotcakes, there was a long line, I only bought  5 copies.[;)]

I have several copies of the November 2008 commerative election editions, so now I officially
have a "collection".

I was up until 2:30am last night and got up at 6:30am, drove around for 2 damn hours, and fought the cold to buy those newspapers!

I will go to my local store that has not let me down before work in the morning!

kittin?
Are  you watching Barack and Michelle walk down Penn. avenue?

It is like 25 degrees here, I hope they don't catch pneumonia !
This is wonderful!!!!

kittinSol -> RE: Watch the inaugaration LIVE! (1/20/2009 1:14:09 PM)

I am watching, Mia - I'm not sure what happened, but the secret services just got them back inside the car pronto, a minute ago or so - it seemed unplanned that they should go back in the car so soon. I hope there's nothing to worry about: I must say, as happy as I am to see this scene, I'm scared to death that something bad could happen. So, in a way, I'm glad to see them back inside the safety of the limo...

I still have the Atlanta Journal-Constitution with the headline, "It's Atlanta!" and the Special edition for the Olympics.

Rejoice!!! Our long National Nightmare is over!
