MEXICO CITY – Mexico's Congress has agreed to hold forums on the possibility of reinstating the death penalty for some crimes.
The forums will gather crime experts, human rights groups, academics and others to discuss the merits of bringing capital punishment back to Mexico.
Mexico formally abolished the death penalty in 2005 but has not held an execution since 1961.
However, a surge in homicides and kidnappings has provoked renewed demands for the death penalty. Drug violence has especially increased, with gang killings doubling last year to more than 5,300.
The Congressional vote Wednesday came in response to a Green Party proposal to impose the death penalty for kidnappers who kill their victims. No date was set for the forums.

I doubt it will happen, but it just shows you how desperate Mexico is getting with all the thugs running around their country.  If you're unaware, Mexico doesn't even have a 'life without parole' penalty for any crime.  It's considered cruel and unusual punishment to lock up kidnappers who behead their victims in prison for the rest of their lives.  [>:]

I'll be interested to read their findings.

I am all for executions, but the problem is - will they execute the right people ?

You got  the very basic problem of capital punishment there, Term.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: "Mexican Congress to hold death penalty forums" (1/23/2009 8:56:51 AM)

Like I said, I don't think it will ever happen in Mexico.  The very transparent causes for violent crime in Mexico are poverty and corruption.  Mexican police officers are not going to risk their lives for a couple hundred dollars a month.  The damn drug dealers aren't even afraid to engage the Mexican Army in gun battles in broad daylight on crowded city streets.  Mexico needs an overhaul of it's entire criminal justice system.

Termyn8or -> RE: "Mexican Congress to hold death penalty forums" (1/23/2009 9:27:25 AM)

They could solve all of this if they just stripped all the drug laws right off the books. In a country ridden with poverty, money is a very strong allure to say the least.

Here's a fucking Termy twist if I do say so myself. How moral is it for a government to steal the wealth of it's people to the point where they have a hard time feeding themselves, and then making their way of making a living illegal ?

How is it we lost so many jobs with NAFTA, yet they seemingly haven't appeared in Mexico ? I heard the giant sucking sound indeed, and by now things should be good down there. Why are they not ?

We didn't get gangland Chicago because people were producing and consuming so much they had no time to drink or make and distribute booze. We got it because when they steal, someone is missing part of their wealth. When you create a black market by making something illegal, you, as the supposed leaders, actually CAUSE crime.

Stupid fucks, if they only knew. Get out of that ivory tower, people like to smoke a bit of things you may not, but the majority of pot, opium and some coke users never bother anyone. They remain productive members of society and act responsibly.

Agreed some don't, but think of alcohol. So that makes it apparent to some that "we must draw the line somewhere", but to others it makes it apparent that we don't need to draw a line anywhere, just erase the line. Taking the profit out of [an illegal] enterprise is like sucking the wind out of it's sails.

As far as too may people getting high ? Well drug laws have really worked, there are millions of streetcorners where you can get any drug you want. So since they didn't work, why aren't 90% of the people hooked ?

But they'll keep doing what doesn't work anyway, and do you know why ? Because there's MONEY in it.

Term I agree with you about the futility of the drug war.  Mexico has this problem because we are the ones that create a demand for drugs.  We convince South American countries to wage war on coca farmers, which is a plant that has been consumed for thousands of years.  When it's consumed in the traditional way, it's a mild stimulant.

But it's not just drug gangs that are doing this.  Mexico has a pretty bad problem with kidnapping gangs.  Mexico is not a poor country, they're really not.  But there is a huge income gap between the poor and the wealthy, and the government doesn't do anything to address that problem.  It's why we have so many people pouring across the border.

A global problem there, slaveboy. The forces of modern capitalism have done well by the super rich.

It's probably more corruption than capitalism. If capitalism were the culprit then we would never have seen images from the Soviet Union of people standing in line for hours just to get basic food staples.

kittinSol -> RE: "Mexican Congress to hold death penalty forums" (1/23/2009 10:33:53 AM)

If that's what you want to believe. Let's leave out the fact that the gap between rich and poor has increased immensely in the non-corrupt United States then.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: "Mexican Congress to hold death penalty forums" (1/23/2009 10:38:00 AM)

Well it's not anywhere near Mexico's income disparities.  Mexico has always had that problem; it's never had a large middle class.  Mexican culture and her history have perpetuated that.  By and large, the U.S. and other western countries have a large middle class and small upper and lower classes.  It's also a lot easier to climb the social ladder; it's not so easy in Mexico.

Kitten, since when are we noncorrupt?  As for the US gap between the classes, NAFTA took away the middle class jobs widening that gap so that a few could line their pockets with record profit.   I'd say that qualifies as corrupt.

This was precisely my point... it was irony, Knighty :-) .

Irishknight -> RE: "Mexican Congress to hold death penalty forums" (1/23/2009 3:41:13 PM)

Sorry, Kitten.  I was thinking of corruption on a personal level with that first question.  I've worked damned hard getting myself corrupted.  I just want my recognition.

The ones who do get the death penalty (from the drug dealers).

slaveboyforyou -> RE: "Mexican Congress to hold death penalty forums" (1/23/2009 6:46:01 PM)

Yep and that's why Mexico needs to get serious about having  modern, well-trained, and well paid law enforcement.  It needs a secure prison system.  It needs to aggressively prosecute corrupt public officials that do business or associate with gangsters.

TheHeretic -> RE: "Mexican Congress to hold death penalty forums" (1/23/2009 6:54:18 PM)

I saw something the other day about China giving the death penalty to the executives responsible for the tainted milk.  If a US exec could be shown to be directly responsible for the salmonella in the peanut butter, I'd say he should face capital charges.

It is. It makes much more sense.

Is this an admission of the crime problem in the US? If so when will the death penalty make the US safe enough so that they don't need it anymore?

It's not like we never had the death penalty or society had more violent crime when we did have it. Death penalty doesn't reduce crime because it ignores the fact criminals never envisage getting caught so it's not a deterrent.

ALAstella -> RE: "Mexican Congress to hold death penalty forums" (1/24/2009 5:33:48 AM)

What Slaveboy is writing here makes a lot of sense. It's poverty which is the main issue here together with the ineffective criminal justice system. Reintroducing the death penalty would only be a state sponsored version of of the social cleansing which goes on in other Latin American societies such as Brazil and Colombia.
