I don't see anyone being afraid of stereotypical maleness.  Maybe lowering their standards to accept it perhaps, but not fearing the stereotype itself.

I also have to add that I don't see those traits in men any more than I do in women.  Personality is what gives people their traits, (good or bad) not gender.

A 45!?!?  Cool!  Officer's or full sized?

Hello A/all,

First, I apologize to Lady Pact for my oversight.

Second, The examples that I used were just what I could think up on the fly... so... If I offended any of you ladies who might have read my post and thought...  'Wait... I'm a guy?"  I apologize (alot)!

For the record:  I don't follow spectator sports my self:  I prefer to participate.  There are times however where a friend will have the local pro or college game on the tube.  I find that I can get as involved in the action as anybody.  I suppose that there is something... what?..  cathartic?  about being able to put a little passion behind an otherwise silly game.  Perhaps it releases all of that agression.   Hey!  Why do we pay fully grown me to play children's games?  I digress.

Conditions permiting, I bath at least daily.  I do, however have a favorite, roomy sweat shirt that I wear in the winter... Now in fact!

I will relate one experience that leaves me puzzled.  A friend of mine asked me for a favor not long ago.  This favor involved blown down trees, one of which was hung up.  The situation was rather complex and my friend had neither the tools or expertice to clear the problem safely.  When my friend offered to pay me, I responded with an old running joke between us,  "You don't have to pay me.  I'll do it 'cause I'm a man and I can!"   That's what he always said when he helped me with my car.   Now here's the part that puzzles me...  A lady standing next to us let out a loud and scornful,  "Oh brother!"

I felt compelled to ask here to edify me appropos of her comment.  Did  my remarks degrade her in any way?  If so I apologized for any unintened slight ( I am apologizing a lot lately).  Did she gain anything for "putting me in my place?"  Was the comment Pavlovian in nature?

I was polite if not downright pleasant.  She even laughed at the reference to Pavlov.  She could not explain her comment though.
I suspect that up to that point, she never considered the question either.  That's about the only first hand experience I have had with this phenomonon.

Puzzled,
Mike

I have to say, SR, that I've noticed a certain tendency for some women not to grasp that some men are well aware of the stereotypical way they're seen by such women.  They won't grasp the self-deprecating irony in a line like "I'll do it 'cause I'm a man and I can" ; instead, they'll just see what they think is a standard case of machismo.

Relatedly, I've seen women pretending to be men on forums (not CM's, I hasten to add).  It's amazing how quickly they give themselves away by overdoing the "machismo" stuff.

OttersSwim -> RE: Are Women afraid of maleness? (1/24/2009 9:48:13 AM)

I think another pertinent follow on question might be to the Ladies...Are you attracted to Manliness?  And what do you like about it?

As I have stated before, I see a large difference between a "male" and a "man".   Behind the bravado that we are all taught, there can (IMO, should) be underlying teachings of honor, honesty, deference, courage, etc. that I believe to be very positive aspects of our gender socialization.

The "because I can" is the bravado.  The sentiment behind it hopefully is "you honor me with your request".

Lockit -> RE: Are Women afraid of maleness? (1/24/2009 10:12:22 AM)

I am attracted to a manly man, macho type... but cannot always live with them. lol  I need far more than the brawn.  It is the man behind any brawn or lack thereof that I now seek.  I was silly when younger! lol  Oh hell... I can be silly now... but in different ways!

Guess it's a matter of where you keep it, then. If I'm in a situation which I feel threatened by others, I tend to push my coat back on my shoulders, which serves three purposes- giving an impression of larger physical size, making sure my arms can move freely in my sleeves, and making for easier access to my sidearm.

I don't keep anything in my breast pocket... when I bend over, it falls out [&:]

I believe that outward displays of fear embolden aggressors (of either gender, and just about every species), and would not recommend it.

Personally, I think that a male's natural state is out in the garage working on stuff, in which case there's nothing to afraid of... until you smell smoke. [:-]

It's not a matter of it accomplishing anything. When people feel threatened, consciously or unconsciously they make themselves smaller. Men and women, adults and children, humans and other animals, we all do that.

I'm not talking about silly machismo. I am talking about men in their natural state: ie: Scratching where it itches; Yelling or groaning at the tv during a football game; Wearing your favorite old tech school sweat shirt (you know, the sweaty one)! How could guys being guys be scary?

If that's what makes a man, I must be one.

And you probably are. [;)]

Otther you asked and answered your own great question...    That is indeed what makes me attracted to a man.   I apreciate him, when a male has become a man, and he possesses the qualities you state above, not at all scary, more *swoon inducing* in fact.     M

TexasMaam -> RE: Are Women afraid of maleness? (1/25/2009 12:06:16 PM)

'scared', no. occasionally disgusted? absolutely.

But then, one has to consider that I work in an office where the "ladies" room often has unflushed feces left standing in the toilet water, drops of blood spattered on the tile floor near the commode, soiled toilet paper wadded up and dropped on the floor instead of into the commodes, hair & makeup smeared all over the countertops and god knows what all ends up in the sink basins.

When you look at these slobs at their desks, they're all dolled up, perfumed, nails manicured and painted, hair coiffed, sporting high heeled shoes and dripping with bling.

It's not only men being pigs that's disgusting: we have our fair share of females at the office who have pink skin, curly tails, and really short snouts: lipstick and all.

I swear I'd rather go to my car and pee out on the parking lot than to go to the "ladies" room at the office.  Don't even ask me to attend another 'pot luck' luncheon there.

Now THAT's  SCARY stuff.

TM

LunaVenus -> RE: Are Women afraid of maleness? (1/25/2009 12:28:57 PM)

I LOVE ALL MEN except slobs, brutes, those who are abusive, and those suffering from Intermittent Explosive Disorder.  I Love a man who enjoys making me  feel like a lady too by volunteering those extra chores that may be a bit much for me. I don't care if they are like wearing a tootoo or hiking boots... as long as they are all man yet gentle, tender and loving with me.

LadyPact -> RE: Are Women afraid of maleness? (1/25/2009 12:55:29 PM)

SR, believe Me.  I wasn't offended in any way.

Otters, I think you're right about the difference between men and males.  Some have manners, ethics, morals, etc and others don't.  In all seriousness, that doesn't come down to what sweatshirt a person wears or whether or not they become animated watching football.

I forgot to mention earlier, I happen to do the latter.  I also teach all of My subs to say that Joe Paterno is a god.  Not the God, but certainly one of them where I come from.

ETA.....  You do realize God is a Penn State fan.  That's why the sky is blue and white.

um... who is Joe Paterno?  is that a... SPORTS reference?  [:o]
