Hiya miss :) I think that a great deal of what is fed to us as beauty has become greatly artificial.  A portion of society measure themselves by that yardstick and push to keep up with what is deemed beautiful by societal standards, fake or not. I am a makeup junkie.  I love doing girly things, facials, cosmetics, pedicures, etc.  I also color my hair to hide the gray (I started turning gray at 17 or 18).  In many ways, I have fallen victim to the societal beauty trap.  But there are many days I go au naturale and say screw the makeup - this is me too.   Even in my profile pics, you'll see highly made-up photos and those sans cosmetics as well. I don't think that using cosmetics and coloring/curling hair is hiding natural beauty per se... I believe it is our way of trying to enhance what we already have.  On the other hand, I do see that there comes a point where enhancing turns to replacing at the cost of looking completely unnatural. There is a balance perhaps to be found.  It will most likely vary for each person but there will always be those who take it to the extremes.  As with everything else, the pendulum swings broadly in both directions. My sister cannot even run to the gas station without putting on a full face of makeup and curlilng/styling/spraying her hair.  She would be mortified to be caught without makeup.  I on the other hand, spend half of my days without all of that stuff.  She shakes her head and doesn't understand me.  Some days I do the same about her.  ;) Well wishes, Cav's ally

~FR~

I love this thread

(Also, I HATE wearing makeup (for theatre... Yeah, that's it, theatre) so I avoid it when I can. I do look much better with a little eyeliner and light foundation to cover the red blush blotches on my cheeks)

All in all... if I could get plastic surgery and have it be free of charge? I'd be on the table waiting for the surgeon two days early. I don't like the way I look at all. I'm a naturally 'pudgy' person, add to that a lot of excess pudge and, well, I look bigger than I'd like (especially since I naturally look bigger than I am thanks to some wonderful physical conditions) :P. Most of the surgery would be focused on removing the excess, but I wouldn't become skinny as a rail, I'd just... well, not be shaped like a blob in the center :P I already eat at a 'maintenance' level (assuming NO exercise, which I do) for my optimal weight (which is what I want to weigh), too, so it'd just be a matter of 'sculpting' what fat they'd leave in to get a nicer shape Oh baby, I'm turning myself on with all this artist talk!

More seriously, I have the unfortunate body type where almost *all* of my fat stores are in my belly. This is also the area that I'd get plastic surgery for. I like a little pudge and love handles... just not HUGE-OMG-IT'S-GOING-TO-SUFFOCATE-SOMEONE-TAKE-SHAMOO-BACK-TO-SEAWORLD pudge.

What I love are people like my grandmother who had her makeup 'permanently done' as she says... I'm like 'uh, does that mean she got her eyeliner, eyeshadow, eyebrows (she shaved hers years ago to start penciling them in) AND lips all tattooed?'

That said, I'm not going to save up for it I'd rather buy as many tattoos as it would take to purchase liposuction than spend more money than I think it's worth.

You are a natural beauty and an amazing make-up artist.  Are you self-taught or did you take schooling?

~fr~

We hide who we really are because of fear. Fear that we won't measure up. Fear that we can't compete. Fear that we won't be liked, that we aren't thin enough, or pretty enough, or young enough.

Along with materialism, we are far too obsessed with "beauty" and we seem to be obssessed with anything but natural beauty. In my opinion, our goal should be to live as healthy as we can because doing so creates natural beauty. Sleep enough, and attempt some kind of exercise daily for at least thirty minutes to an hour a day. Try to begin to eat healthy. We can't change poor junk food habits overnight but we can work on them a baby step at a time. This way our changes are gradual and thus become a lifestyle.

When we exercise as much as we can and enjoy that excercise through a long walk etc. and treat ourselves to healthy snacks and small homemade meals, we feel good about ourselves; hence we are naturally beautiful because beauty truly does come from within us. Confidence blossoms when we put forth the real us and we draw others who think as we do, which is what we want after all, I think.

When we pile on the makeup, try to hide who we really are, and manage to reel someone in through a "dishonest" route, we never really know if it's us they desire. We tend to feel as if we're only acceptable when we've got our make up on or our hair a certain way. When we're simply being who we are without all of the fluff, they'll be fine with who we really are if they are really into us.

I don't know about you but I wouldn't want anyone who wasn't honestly into the real me, flaws and imperfections and all.
