As i got ready for work today i had a thought (oh no lol) which as is natural for me turned into a bit of a tangent of thoughts etc. I was sat in front of the mirror drying my hair and feeling pushed for time, considering i still needed to straighten it and put make up on before i opened my pub. I had about twenty minutes to do all this

Anyway as i looked in the mirror at my rapidly drying hair which was going slightly wavy, its too long and heavy now for the curls it one dried into, i thought of something. I wasn't going to straighten my hair and i wasn't going to put makeup on. I was going to be pretty much au naturale today.

Now thats all well and good but actually it's proved to be a little scarey. My customers don't see me unless i'm all prepared (see ritual above) and i was actually a little nervous about what sort of comments i would get. I shouldn't have been, my hairs been complimented but anyways............

It made me think about natural beauty and enhanced beauty and how far people will actually go just to look good. You can hide a multitude of sins behind a bit of well applied make up. When i straighten my hair, it's not natural, i'm a curly head naturally. I know quite a few people who are natural beauties but still go through regimes to enhance themselves. Why do we do it?

In cm we have quite a few natural beauties who on their profile pics are completely natural. Our beloved greeedy top is one, i could not believe her age when i saw it on the wedding site. I thought greedy was in her early twenties. Colouredin is another, not sure she has pics on her page anymore but she hasn't hidden behind makeup and fancy regimes to look so good.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with wanting to look as good as possible but i have to wonder where does it all end? When i was 17 i wore a touch of makeup and blow dried my hair with a diffuser to encourage the curls. Now i wear more makeup and fry my hair with high heat straighteners just to enhance how i look.

It's weird really cos a friend of mine was recently looking at pics of me at 17 and said i hadn't changed a bit other than a few lines here and there and deeper frown lines lol. She said i was very lucky i was aging really well. I laughed and said 'god i wish, when i have the money i'm having a tummy tuck, boob job and anything else i can to make me look younger / good.'

Thinking now though i say fuck it, i'm gonna age gracefully. I look at some of these women who have had plastic surgery and yeah they look good for their age but it ain't natural. Do i want to look 30 when i hit 70 lol? No freaking way, i want to look like me.

Now please i'm not judging anyone who has or chooses to have plastic surgery in any shape or form. What i am saying is i can't personally see the beauty in people who have altered their image / looks / body so much you can't tell it's them anymore. With respect anyone who has a few thousand to spare can look that good, its no big deal, nothing to write home about.

Through curiosity i looked at a few cosmetic surgery statistics. In the Uk in 2007 32,453 people had cosmetic surgery. This was an increase of 12.2% on 2006. The number of women having surgery was 29,469 and the number of men 2,881. 91% of all cosmetic surgery is under gone by females.

In the USA in 2006 (couldn't find anything more recent) 11 million people had cosmetic surgery. Boob jobs, nose reshaping and lipo being the top three choices of procedure.

Stats from www.consultingroom.com

Thats a whole lot of people not happy with what god gave them.

You know what Misst I would say that you look very natural in your photos so really you shouldnt put yourself through the regime when you clearly dont need it. Personally I like to do bits and bobs because it makes me feel good, I know that if I feel good then Ill be more confident then have more fun. But I just cant understand some peoples effort for 'beauty' when I see the girls wandering down the street with orange faces or page three girls pumped full of sillicone i just dont get it. Its in my view actually unattractive. It shows such a low self esteem especially when a lot of these women are far more attractive without all that crap.

What I seriously wonder is who actually tells people it looks good? Is it because people are so worried of offending someone that they have to at least compliment the effort taken to do all this crap. I mean if I got a face lift and someone told me I looked worse then how much would that shatter me.

Its a strange society that values plastic looking women, airbrushing and plastic surgery for this totally unachievable look.

(oh and thankyou so much for the compliment)

wow... thanks, Misst!

Pirate and I both agree that there is often far too much emphasis on artificially enhancing ones appearance (well, except for tattoos *grin*).  Like you, when I was in my teens, it was makeup and hairdryers and hairspray (yes, I am probably singlehandedly responsible for at least .05% of the ozone layer deterioration.lol).  Frankly, these days, I'm just too lazy.  Good damned thing Pirate likes me as I am...LOL

I have to wonder at the honesty involved too. Ok so you're not happy with your boobs, have them done by all means but don't try to tell me they are natural afterwards.
Don't have thousands of pounds worth of cosmetic surgery and try to convince me it's all down to good genes and exercise either.
By all means enhance yourself and be happy but at least be honest about it.

For me, it's like this: nature gave me a pretty decent canvas to work from, but it makes me feel good to enhance it. Now, there's a difference between applying a little makeup here and there and going through the whole plastic surgery shebang...

That's just it. When / if (hell will freeze over first) i settle with someone they are going to have to see the natural me. I don't wake up with perfect hair and makeup just so. I don't always bother doing anything about my wild woman look if i don't have to go anywhere. If all my partner sees is a perfectly made up enhanced me he's going to get one hell of a shock when reality kicks in.

You hit the nail on the head, as far as I'm concerned; my natural morning look is an intimate one. It's like nakedness, not something I want to share with everyone that meets me.

*Nods* yup I am with you on that, it would be like joan rivers saying that she woke up one morning looking the way she does or cher, we all know they have had it done, lets not marvel at how great they look for their age.

Completely agree.

I'm running a bit of a test tonight. Going to Sir with curly mop and no make up on, see the reaction lol.

(Curly divas tend to hate it though: it's a fucking shag. But I could never be bothered with a straightener. Another major shag.)

Now you got me confused do you mean shag in the british sense because I can totally understand that, curly haired girls certainly should be getting many a shag.

Don't try and confuse me again, colouredin, we both know that a shag can mean both a hassle and a fuck. Oh, and a carpet... how appropriate  .

I rarely wear make-up, or spend more than 10 minutes on my hair in the mornings, not because I'm so stunningly, naturally beautiful that I don't need to (I wish!), but because I'm basically lazy and would much rather use that extra time to catch a few more z's....

My Mum has a saying that spooks me out. Before heading out of the door - whether to work, or a social engagement - she disappears upstairs exclaiming "I just have to put on my face". Put on her face! There's something so... macabre about the idea of putting on one's face, as if what was there before was NOT a face, or something. It's just a turn of phrase, obviously, but it does point to a certain level of discomfort with (or disassociation from) her natural state. It makes me a bit sad, to be honest.

I straighten my hair only when I'm going out, because half of it is wavy and half of it is straight.  I might not bother if all of it was straight, or all of it was wavy.  I think I have cow licks or something in the back.

My step mom did something with my daughter's hair and chemically straightened it.  I think she took a regular box perm, put it in her hair, and instead of curling it, combed it out straight.  They left the chemicals on the same length of time, etc.  But when they were done with it, her hair was straight!  She hasn't used a straightener in weeks!

I have to totally agree on that one...as I am almost against make-up, or at least it is pretty rare that I have any of it at my place...when I was younger I looked older. At my sports club we attended training at weekends fairly often with higher professionals in our sport and when we went for the disco sometimes a friend of mine tended to put her make up in my face to kind of ensure more that I get through security (I was 14-15) and oh did I hate that...it's just not something I am really keen on...of course I had experimented about it as a teenager but that was just a short period and that was it...kind of just wasting some of my money and nothing else.

Regarding hair on me a hair dresser would get poor as I don't go often to the hair dresser and can't be bothered about wasting money into colouring my hair or so either. I enjoyed it a bit when I was younger but at present I am not bothered about and am lucky enough when I manage in the mornings to get enough time to brush them through before tying them together. If I use a hair dryer then only because I need to get them dry for going out or so, normally I wash thema and let them dry naturally which means sometimes during the night when I am asleep or knot them together for work or uni until they are a little bit more dry...

Today I am simply a) too lazy to waste my time getting it on and spending the evening again with getting it off...nope...am not wasting my time with that. Additionally b) I am too mean to waste my money on that (and as I am usually quite successful in spending money that says a lot about me).

Once in a while a person picks up on me about not using make up where I then just tell her that I am beautiful enough and don't need to hide my face behind colours...

Also a friend from my godfather is in her 40th, smokes and uses a heck of a lot of makeup and once (about 3 years ago) I was shocked about how old she looks and realised that my mum who is approx. 15 years older then her has a much nicer skin... that I guess made it final for me to stick to my views and not to be bothered about make-up, as my mother meant that usually women when they are in their 40s you can see the damage.

Now, I don't smoke, I rarely drink alcohol (for a variety of reasons), I don't use make-up, I don't do tanning...if I wouldn't be addicted to my sweets at times then I think I would have a pretty happy skin

Also I have to say that my mother never used much make-up, therefore I also didn't get used to it via my upbringing...

Therefore I safe my money, time and let my skin breeth freely
