All these different states having unique emissions laws can't be good for the auto industry, pa. Look at the EU, the reason they're federating is to get away from this kind of crap. Obama is taking us backwards!

And this has zero to do with the trillion-dollar "stimulus" giveaway, this is Mr. Obama pandering to the "Global Warming" crowd - nothing more than that. And when combined with all the other missteps he's making, it may well cost the U.S. its entire domestic auto industry.

Sanity,  17 states sued and lost to the fed to have better emissions then the fed.

17.

as someone who breaths and lives on a busy street- this is a good thing.  the health of the auto industry isnt a factor. these lawsuits- which would not have happened if there was state rights- occurred during the boom years.

in 1973 energy embargo- we as a country were warned to get it together.

the auto industry killed the trolly systems in the 20s.   they killed the electric car.

be that as it may- no one has the right to toxic the air that I breath, and especially air that seaps into my home.

I was about to comment on this. We (Detroit included) have had YEARS to work on this, but have kept pushing it back and pushing it back. I don't see why people act as if these latest economic upheavals and necessary environmental regulations are "new."

Alani, I think it just gives those that don't care for our new president something else to whine about. That's all I can figure out.

They gotta have SOMEthing!!

And Mr. Obama kicking the economy when it's down for no good reason is SOMEthing

SOMEthing we don't need, but apparently SOMEthing we're in for a lot of.

Edited to add, this is the news video I meant to link to in the OP.

Sanity, I know I am damned sick and my brain is fuzzy but I fail to see how requiring cars to have new technology for cleaner air is kicking the economy when it is down.

I mean, you gotta have engineers to create the technology, someone to build it (perhaps new manufacturing), mechanics and new parts to retrofit old cars.

To me, that sounds like money going into the economy. Also, for those that have those old cars and are struggling, is there any indication they will not get some sort of grace period time frame to comply?

From where I sit it sounds like a win win kinda thing. New technology, new things being created and built, cleaner air.

Mr. Obama's new emissions rules allow each individual state to set its own emissions standards. So instead of just having to deal with federal red tape, the automakers are now going to have to kow-tow to each individual state's bungling lawmakers.

I mean, how many hurdles should we really be throwing at Detroit's feet right now? This is madness - it's like we're just flushing all that "stimulus" money away.

It may not be the right time to come out with such regulations but in general, I am for it. Today's technology can build much better engines. Detroit is already dead. The top level managment incompetence is intersting phenomenon by itself. Is raising level of incompetence inside top managment  characteristic path for supercorporations?

Okay, the different states thing I think is weird.....BUT, if they just manufacture to the strictest, then wouldn't all the bases be covered.

I am just thinking, if I was in charge of the manufacturing process, I would say "hey this new thing is kinda fucked up, each state different. Go find the strictest rules and lets comply to them." problemo solved.

better to do the emissions changes now than in six months or a year when they will be bleating they havent had time or money and need more bailout. its not like reducing emissions  are a new thing, they just havent wanted to work out a solution, just fattened their wallets.

Have a committee of committees design a car then... and then force Detroit to build it.

You really think that's such a good idea?

Doesn't look like they've fattened their wallets too much. In fact, I'd say that all the thousands and thousands of rules and laws and regulations that currently entangle American car manufacturers are more a factor of what got Detroit in the bind they're currently in than their upper management.

And the Unions...

Now, with all the rules cars are so expensive that few can afford to buy them new, and so they're driving old beaters - which is probably much harder on the environment than if the Washington bureaucrats had left Detroit alone from the beginning.

Depends. It's obvious the path they have been on hasn't been working.

Granted, I don't know all of the details and I am the first to admit it. I do know that I don't want my tax money going to "business as usual". I am, and I expect those receiving my tax money, to be open to new ideas. Thinking outside their old corporate box. Right now I am hoping that whomever the people are that ARE in the know, that do know the details, are making good decisions. I've already got a job, I cannot do theirs for them also.

The way I look at it is this. We elected a new president based upon his ideas of a different way. It is obvious to me, he is a very intelligent man. It is also obvious he made some very interesting choices in who is working for, and with, him. Because I was part of the process that elected him, I am hoping like hell, he and they, know what they are doing.

If not, we may be even more screwed than we are now after the mess of idiots that just left.

Actually, Europe is getting away from the very sort of madness that Mr. Obama is leading the "United States" into.

It's called the EU, look into it some time.

I like my Mazda very much. It's working for me. The biggest pain in the ass was waiting for it to get here, from overseas.

Coporate Greed and City corruption has killed Detroit.  Detroit needs a whole new administration from the top to the bottom. If you want to see what it is like to live in a depression come to Detroit.

i agree 1000%!  detroit has been dying a slow death for many years...the city is considered bankrupt.

as for the emission deal? i live in an emission (controlled) state and it was needed. a previous state i lived in didnt have emission control and w/ the smell from a local river, there were times the pollution level was so bad that they advised children, the elderly, and sickly to stay inside. i could stand outside my home and watch the "brown cloud" moving over downtown and heading my way like a fog.  in some, if not many places, standards are needed.
