I am a non US citizen,as such,I think its fair to ask about what I'm seeing.........

Why does your Superbowl get in the way of so many ordinary local peoples lives ?
They are not getting any return for having to work around the "celebration" , in fact , it is costing them.

What is wrong with a good American style football game??

Much better than watching a tennis match or those annoying ice dancing competitions.

oh geeezzzz
yeah, towns in preparation for superbows tend to do some pretty insane things
like mass euthanasia of strays, removal/relocation of homeless, etc
all to present a pristine image to the millions of TV viewers
none of the actual problems are helped at all. and any money that was made from the thing is gone in like a couple of months(people always argue for the validity of the obsession with sports by saying that sports bring in tons of revenue, and of course they do, but there have to be more ways to support a city than SPORTS)
most of it goes to CEOs, executives, agencies, people in charge. the regular person on the street gets very little in return

purepleasure -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/27/2009 12:02:50 PM)

Pirate, a lot of the hoopla you're experiencing is because you happen to be in the area where the Superbowl is being held this year.  Under a normal circumstances, Tampa is very different.  All too often sports fans swarm into a town where a major event is being held, and because of the hype involved, and add alcohol into that mix.... well, let's just say they're not very well behaved.

soul2share -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/27/2009 1:16:58 PM)

Personally, football is like 4 hours of my life I'll never see again......I don't even watch the commercials anymore!

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/27/2009 1:30:53 PM)

There's a good reason that I refer to this nonsense as The Stoopid Bowl!!!

DesFIP -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/27/2009 1:37:21 PM)

People aren't flying into Tampa just for the day. If they have tickets, they are making a vacation out of it. So four days full occupancy of hotels, restaurants, local shopping centers, gas stations. And overall a lot of tax money. Yes, the police services will be at a higher usage than normally but hotel taxes are much higher than general sales tax. All the maids in the hotels, waitresses, etc will be getting tip money. If normally a hotel of 400 rooms would be at 60% occupancy and for this week will be at 100% then the hotel clerks work longer hours, and get paid more.

That's a lot of people getting extra earnings. Plus a lot of extra revenue for the hosting city.

Some of us US citizens really don't get it either.  I always volunteer to work that day.  There is little else on TV and little else to do that day.  People spend money without batting an eyelash, as if it was an important holiday.   Personally, I think the whole thing is quite silly.  It is amazing how the media and the football bigwigs have created such a stir about it.  My boss & I were having a conversation.  He was telling me how it was not only an opportunity for the men to get together, but that it was great for the women to get together & visit with one another as well.  I have to disagree.  I never understood the concept of a couple going out to visit together just to be separated from one another.  I would absolutely love to go back to the old blue laws when the stores were closed on Sundays, so family's could have some family time together.  Superbowl just seems like another excuse to zone out a family's opportunity to spend it together.

servantforuse -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/27/2009 1:46:57 PM)

I don't see it 'getting in the way' of anyones life. It is the most watched event of the year every year. It brings in more ad revenue than any other event in the Country every year. It is party time for millions of sports fans around the world. More money is bet on this game than any other event every year. I love watching the Super Bowl even though the 12 time world champion Green Bay Packers didn't get close this year..

Some people follow other entertainment that I have no interest in.

The NFL is compelling on many levels, it is a highly successul business.  It has great human interest stories of failure/success/comebacks.  Fantasy football is widely followed and many people gamble on games.

I wish I could hang out in Tampa this week, leading up to the SB and run into my favorite ESPN radio commentators.

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/27/2009 1:58:44 PM)

Not to mention that there are a record number of toilet flushes during halftime.  [8D]

I do enjoy warching football, but I don't enjoy this particular game.  The last time it was fun for me was when the 49ers crushed Denver & my sister & I had invited some Denver fans to humiliate.  Now that was a fun day!!!!

KatyLied -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/27/2009 2:01:04 PM)

Yes, many wait for half-time to go to the bathroom and refresh their drinks/snacks.
For us, it's not a time we spend apart as a family, we have get togethers that center around football.  And during the playoffs and SB, it turns into not just a get together, but a party.  It will be especially grand this year.  GO STEELERS!

sappatoti -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/27/2009 2:02:59 PM)

Besides the local impact that a Super Bowl hosting has on the city and region, there are also major trends that take place in the broadcast and advertising industries as a result of this one game. The Super Bowl is arguably the single largest, most watched television program in the United States now, and at least 40 countries, if not more, have rights to broadcast it within their borders. Huge amounts of money exchange hands at the corporate levels in order to gain rights to be "the official this" or "the official that" of the Super Bowl and the recipient of these funds goes to the NFL (National Football League) and/or the broadcast network. Of course, the network... NBC for this year... paid a huge amount of money to the NFL for the near-exclusive rights to control the broadcast and export the signals to the interested parties around the planet.

In order for NBC to get the revenues to pay the hefty broadcast rights, they charge insane amounts of money to advertisers who wish to hawk their products and services during this one-time, exclusive event. Many in the advertising world use the Super Bowl as the launching pad for the advertising campaigns they've spent money developing for the coming year. In an advertisers' blitz, each one has tried to come up with a unique angle they hope is memorable enough to break above the rest. If consumers can come away from the game remembering the one advertisement, perhaps there's a chance they may actually try the product or service for the first time with the advertiser's hope they can convert them into long time customers. For many companies, no expenses are spared in the creation of these advertising spots with huge sums of money exchanging hands between advertising agencies and talent (creative, technical, and performance) in order to get these unique pieces of pop culture onto the television broadcast schedule and before the consumers' eyeballs and eardrums during the game.

The amount of money that passes hands is staggering, for this being a purely commercial sports/entertainment. That may be the biggest effect on the rest of the world.

In the end, it's just a game between two highly paid squads of players that compete to see who wins the league championship. Is it a "world" title? My personal opinion says it isn't simply because no team from outside of the NFL plays in the game. Then again, if given the chance, I'm sure the NFL would consider professional teams from outside the United States, if the demand for this form of gamesmanship is warranted. Once that happens then perhaps this game could be considered a "world" title game.

thats ok Linea...i needed water spit all over the desk. Thanks [:)]

And Katy is right...it is not a situation where the menfolk gather in the den to watch the game and us girly girls have a chatfest in the kitchen. In fact...i can out-bellow anyone as the Steelers clench another Superbowl ring.

And BTW...our wonderful Level has stated that the Cards are going to beat the Steelers.

I never could figure out the world bit, in the world series or the superbowl, unless you count the number of non natives playing  in the teams. But then again this is only  my third superbowl, Ive some catching up to do.
I will however be partying myself and watch the game
GO STEELERS

It is a great day to be out shopping because so many people are glued to the TV all day.  The sales of soda, beer, pizza and chicken wings soar and do be careful when driving because of all the drunks behind the wheel.  Over the counter cures for hang-overs also spike the day after, think Alka-Seltzer, aspirins, Tylenol, juice and sports drinks.  We must support the economy in small ways whenever possible.
