I never understood the concept of a couple going out to visit together just to be separated from one another.

Seems like a daft idea to me too

People aren't flying into Tampa just for the day. If they have tickets, they are making a vacation out of it. So four days full occupancy of hotels, restaurants, local shopping centers, gas stations. And overall a lot of tax money. Yes, the police services will be at a higher usage than normally but hotel taxes are much higher than general sales tax. All the maids in the hotels, waitresses, etc will be getting tip money. If normally a hotel of 400 rooms would be at 60% occupancy and for this week will be at 100% then the hotel clerks work longer hours, and get paid more.

That's a lot of people getting extra earnings. Plus a lot of extra revenue for the hosting city.

I wish my boss had gotten that memo... *sigh*

re: megabucks to advertising... yeah, but since the major advertisors arent based here in Tampa, how much of that is actually going to benefit THIS city?

Gotta say, I'll be bloody thrilled when this shit is over and done.

Daytona during race weeks and bike week faces a similar situation.  ResidentSadist and everhope will soon learn the pleasures and pain of living in that area during the high tourist seasons.  They have my condolences.  That is one of the few things I DON'T miss about Daytona.

There's a good reason that I refer to this nonsense as The Stoopid Bowl!!!

Yeah, yeah... we all know you're a woman and thereby testosterone challenged...

I get it now , sort of curious that everywhere calls it "American Football" because it pretty much only exists in the States and then it has a "World" championship.

U.S. soccer has got better though , it gets the US into the World Cup Finals too (the USA v Mexico could be a good match)

Now, soccer:  There's a game for ya!!  I sort of started watching it by accident one day & I was hooked.  Since I haven't watched TV much at all in the last few years, I've lost track.  But I did get to see the women's team play live in the SF Bay Aea a decade or so ago.  In spite of my testosterone handicap, I do love good sports.

OK

Point #1:  The Superbowl is NOT a World championship - Canada happens to have its own championship called the Grey Cup.  (reminds people that football is supposed to consist of 3 downs not 4 and ends in November!!!!)

Point #2:  Canada happens to have the Toronto Blue Jays (you'll stole the Montreal Expos from us)

GreedyTop -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/28/2009 8:10:32 PM)

the Blue Jays come down here for Spring training.. in Clearwater.. I keep meaning to try and catch a game, but always forget

SavageFaerie -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/28/2009 8:10:47 PM)

GreedyTop -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/28/2009 8:11:37 PM)

yep, Sage... *sigh* I'll be so damned glad when it's over

piratecommander -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/28/2009 8:13:24 PM)

The USA womens soccer team are currently ranked 1 in the world (slightly better than the men who are 22nd) and they won the world cup in 1999.

Hope this does not upset the testosterone brigade too much but that makes the USA womens team arguably it's most successful team on the world stage (and they're better looking than the mens team too)

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Superbowl And Its Impact On The World (1/28/2009 8:17:46 PM)

It was after the World Cup that I saw them.  I think it may have been an exhibition game.  *elderly drug user with poor memory*

Pretty much ... zero ... zip ... nada ... nothing ...

Unless you happen to work for the local NBC affiliate in which case you'll have to work your ass off and earn overtime while the network big-wigs push the orders around.

The Tampa Bay's cut will be whatever the hospitality industry brings in. There's also the charitable side of the NFL that may pump a few coins into the area's goodwill missions but no one seems to be eager to talk about that.
