If we actually had a real conservative in the presidency in memory; I'd be happy to point him out.  Actual fiscal and governmental conservatism has been dead in this country for a very long time.

Ron Paul is very much a real fiscal conservative...which is why he had zero shot at the presidency.

Yes, thank you.

I agree with the first part, though I have never in my memory seen what you define as conservatism.

What you describe seems more like a libertarian viewpoint.

Neither of which I necessarily disagree with, though I do believe government has a role in providing necessary services.  It's why we have government.

Yet I've watched our conservative government, during the past eight years, intrude on many issues that should not be in their venue.  The Terry Schiavo case for one.

Wow... I don't like the cold and I will turn my heat up to be comfortable to do what I need to do in a day.  It isn't like the President is working a nine to five here.  I would be dressed comfortably and doing what needed to be done while paying attention to my needs so that I could go longer, faster... and do more.  Sometimes you just have to balance things out.

I was required to dress very well and got a few comments for my more casual wear in my office because they had to keep up appearances...  All while I worked around the clock, dealt with women who had nothing left, at least thirty six people, with sometimes twenty um's under the age of five... I think to do my job properly I needed to be at my best, not just looking good.  I looked decent, I just went comfy as I worked twenty hour days for the most part.  I had to counsel, deal with um's, clients in crisis and prepare for speaches and on and on.

If the man wants to work with his coat off and in just a shirt... with the heat up a bit... so the fuck what?  He has a big job to do... I would like to see anyone complaining do it without some comforts.  And this is coming from someone who wasn't a fan of either canidate...  He was voted in... now let him do his job.  Bitch about the real problem issues... but a few degree's for comfort... give me a break!

Obama hasn't lived in Hawaii since prep school. And the last time I looked both Massivetwoshits and Chitcago both got pretty cold in the winter.

its called leading by example!
he did tell the nations that we cannot drive out SUV's and have our thermostats set to 72. its not right.
so he gets into office and does just the opposite? perhaps you can accept that , but I would have posted the same thing if mccain or w or clintoon where in ofc.

I'm not, for some Doms anyway.  After all, being a liberal or Democrat means having a nuanced world instead of a clear black-and-white one

Not that I necessarily disagree with most of the post, but this part struck me as ironic...claiming to have a nuanced world instead of a clear black-and-white one...while painting the "opposition" in absolutes.

Not all conservatives (And probably not a majority) fit the mold you paint them as...and I know more than my fair share of liberals that have extremely absolute, biased opinions who reject anything that doesn't fit their narrow world view.

Open-mindedness and closed-mindedness are not unique to either liberals or conservatives...you'll find plenty of both in both parties.

You do have a point there.  I should have said to be a good liberal or Democrat one has a nuanced view of the world.

In my experience, I find a much higher percentage of open-mindedness among liberals than among conservatives.  In fact, a large psychological study a few years back came to the same conclusion--conservatives by and large like their world unchanging and un-nuanced.

Lockit -> RE: Conserving energy the "Obama way" (1/29/2009 5:23:24 PM)

You never had a day when you had to break your own rules of some sort?  I know that a first week at any job can bring on a case of nerves or little sleep... the body gets colder.  To put on bulky clothing might pose some hardship.  I know I can't stand working in much of anything.  I have a blanket and a sweater between hot flashes... and yes, I do say we should not put the heat up too high... but sometimes I do.  Sometimes I can't get warm... sometimes there is just too much to do and I must be able to move.

So he said something and everything he says, must be exactly what he lives.  Yes.. I do believe in keeping my word... yes I believe in honor and country... and what is best... but sometimes I don't always do all I say or think or idealy want.

He is human... you want perfection?  Well... let's start with you.  Let's see... you need to him to lead you by example?  He proves he is human... whatever faults he has... I haven't seen a perfect in the white house as long as I have been alive and that's a good bit of time.  Are you perfect?  No... but then you aren't leading the country... but really... let's be reasonable.  Do you think now that he has found correction in the media blast of his heat blast that it will stay at 80 or do you think they will jimmy rigg things to prove he is being a good lil president and a good man to follow.. or what?

I would like to know when the president needed to be an example to those who feel ready to jump his bones for a lil heat and comfort on a first week of taking on his service.  I mean... we are all adults... I don't need to follow the man's example.  I try to do what is right... but I am also wrong.  Human.. damn fucking human... off with the heads of anyone who shows any human...  That is just how I see it...  Good or bad... by his term he will be judged... But I will be damned if I am going to bitch about a bit of heat because he said it is best to keep the heat at 72.  I have said it many times over and turned that sucker up higher.

natasha66 -> RE: Conserving energy the "Obama way" (1/29/2009 5:26:14 PM)

Some people (myself included) don't like being cold.  It's really quite simple.  So he took his jacket off - big damn deal.

Besides, its not like he went off and started a war to settle a family grievance and 'Americanize' a Muslim nation, and in the process caused the deaths of thousands of US soldiers, and then funneled billions of taxpayer money into the war-torn country to be stolen by local officials fleeing the region... lronitulstahp -> RE: Conserving energy the "Obama way" (1/29/2009 5:34:42 PM)

Ok...i get what you're saying about the thermostat...though i don't see an actual temp mentioned in the article itself....
But i found this part pretty interesting:
quote:

Under Mr. Bush, punctuality was a virtue. Meetings started early — the former president once locked Secretary of State Colin L. Powell out of the Cabinet Room when Mr. Powell showed up a few minutes late — and ended on time. In the Obama White House, meetings start on time and often finish late.
When the president invited Congressional leaders to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue last week to talk about his economic stimulus package, the session ran so long that Mr. Obama wound up apologizing to the lawmakers — even as he kept them talking, engaging them in the details of the legislation far more than was customary for Mr. Bush.
“He was concerned that he was keeping us,” said Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, the Republican whip. “He said, ‘I know we need to get you all out of here at a certain time.’ But we continued the discussion. What are you going to say? It’s the president.”
If Mr. Obama’s clock is looser than Mr. Bush’s, so too are his sartorial standards. Over the weekend, Mr. Obama’s first in office, his aides did not quite know how to dress. Some showed up in the West Wing in jeans (another no-no under Mr. Bush), some in coats and ties.
So the president issued an informal edict for “business casual” on weekends — and set his own example. He showed up Saturday for a briefing with his chief economic adviser, Lawrence H. Summers, dressed in slacks and a gray sweater over a white buttoned-down shirt. Workers from the Bush White House are shocked.
I’ll never forget going to work on a Saturday morning, getting called down to the Oval Office because there was something he was mad about,” said Dan Bartlett, who was counselor to Mr. Bush. “I had on khakis and a buttoned-down shirt, and I had to stand by the door and get chewed out for about 15 minutes. He wouldn’t even let me cross the threshold.”
Mr. Obama has also brought a more relaxed sensibility to his public appearances. David Gergen, an adviser to both Republican and Democratic presidents, said Mr. Obama seemed to exude an “Aloha Zen,” a kind of comfortable calm that, Mr. Gergen said, reflects a man who “seems easy going, not so full of himself.”

Oh, for God's sake.

DID YOU SEE THE PART WHERE THEY SAID HE WAS JOKING?

I know most conservatives walk around with a pole jammed firmly up their ass (who says they're not kinky?), but this is getting a little ridiculous.

MarsBonfire -> RE: Conserving energy the "Obama way" (1/29/2009 5:44:51 PM)

Depending on the type of heating system the White House has... steam boiler, central heat, chill/heated water exchangers... it doesn't really matter in the least. Most heating systems for large buildings have expended the energy by the time it reaches the individual VAD's (variable air distributors) So it hardly make much difference what Obama, or anyone in the WH, has their 'stat set at.

Oh, and the discussion about how the GOP are the ones who come gunning for erotic minorities? Yeah, it's true. Who do you think sponsored the last three major subcommitties looking into the "negative influence of pornography?" (Including the Meese Comission.) Yup. Your friend and mine, the GOP. Who are the folks who invariably have sponsored "defense of marriage" ammendments (i.e. the "we intend to cast gays as second class citizens" bills...) Yup. The GOP. Who were the guys who drug their feet about AIDS awareness and research.. while their fearless leader infamously said, "let them die?" Again, the GOP and Ronnie. Who supported concentration camps for those infected with AIDS? You guessed it! Who opposed first ammendment rights in men's magazines, and other porn? The elephants. Who had the statue of "lady justice" covered up, because she had bare breasts? John Ashcroft, arch republican. Who moves us closer to being a theocracy like we all saw in "The Handmaid's Tale" each and every day they wake up and get out of bed? Republicans.

Fuck the GOP. They deserved to lose. They shouldn't be elected dogcatcher in a podunk town. They are total clownshoes on the American political scene. To quote Reagan: "let them die." (politically speaking)

#1  I am not a conservative, so let's start there.

#2- I am not blind, of course I saw that part.

#3- I also saw it live and the latter part was not as lighthearted as the first paragragh I quoted. And the second quote did not say he said it in jest. Th

#4- One shouldn't poke fun at others, when they suffer the same ills.

#5- Many a truth is said in jest.

#6 He contradicts his previous rhetoric about keeping our thermostats down to present ourselves better to the world < paraphrase>

#7- Got anything smaller than a pole I can stick up my butt ? You know, maybe a broomstick and I can sweep the floors as I prance around ? [;)]

It's one of the amazing things I've witnessed consistently on this site.

The vast majority of those here who constantly spout conservative rhetoric claim they are not conservative.

Me, me!  lol  Fiscally conservative; socially more of a centrist.  I know lots of Republicans, many of whom are like me - with the social issues they believe in, say, keeping abortion legal and are iffy on the death penalty.  But most believe in keeping the government out of our personal lives.  I actually think lots of people are more of a mix than being purely lib/con, but that's a personal observation, not based on facts.  :)

As a nurse who volunteered to work with AIDS patients when to do so was to be shunned by family and friends, I agree with you. It was shameful.  But  the dirty hands were not solely those of the GOP. It was a horrble time, and Dems and Reps alike were completely ignorant. Your very own former Governer, who later became President was involved in a scandel regarding his involvement/knowledge of gettng tainted blood supplies for the Red Cross from prisoners who tested positive. At that time law prevented that blood from being distributed in the US, so with Gov. Clinton's approval, the blood was shipped off to Canada and overseas. There was a movie made about it : Factor 8: The Arkansa Prison Scandel.

Did you see And the Band Playd on:  M. Cuomo < Dem: NY> and a significant number of Democratic Governors supported Regans policy and made sure that the problem persisted by ignoring it.

That entire era was a black mark on this country's humanity, but there are many who share the blame and the blame is equally distributed amongst Rep/Dem/Ind. That era and the response to a deadly disease transcended political lines.

He doesn't like being cold? I have no problem with that. Let him crank the heat up!

But he should shut his damn mouth when I crank MY heat up... or when I jump in my big ass SUV as he flies off to Hawaii in his private luxury jet several times per year.

Shouldn't he quit being such a massive hypocrite?

NOW I see that the Democrats are planning to raise the federal tax on cigarettes to a dollar per pack - and Obama's a smoker. Sin taxes - from who? The Democrats!

Liberals!

They think they OWN us, and can do as they damn well please while dictating behavior to us.
