Yep, it's garlic.

Long believed to be true, nobody understood how that could be. "It didn't have a substantial amount of the types of compounds usually responsible for high antioxidant activity." But it turns out that a breakdown product of allicin (the active ingredient in garlic) is a real show-stopper. "The reaction between the sulfenic acid and radicals is as fast as it can get, limited only by the time it takes for the two molecules to come into contact. No one has ever seen compounds, natural or synthetic, react this quickly as antioxidants."

To your health!

K.

Yep, Garlic is all powerful, but thank fuck for odourless garlic capsules, which are the thing, unless the other half is an avid garlic muncher too.

Over here, the Isle of Wight hosts and annual garlic festival where can be found anything and everything garlic, including garlic beer and garlic ice cream.

THE garlic festival is held here in California, in Gilroy, the garlic capital of the world. http://gilroygarlicfestival.com/  I've had the garlic ice cream (yummy) and even garlic grilled wild boar.  I haven't yet tried the garlic brownies.

Ah yes, the aromatic glory that is Gilroy in the summer time...

I can't think of a single one of my fave dishes that doesn't have garlic in it. And none of that bottled crap, please! I LOVE garlic :=).

L'aïoli provençal.

Eat with boiled cod.

rexrgisformidoni -> RE: World's Most Powerful Antioxidant (1/31/2009 8:08:49 PM)

Moose Tracks ice cream (I'm eating right now)
Key lime pie
Cheesecake (no toppings, please, just the real deal)

But, actually, I can't think of a single savory dish that is a fave that doesn't have garlic, and a few sweet ones that DO. I've never had garlic ice cream - but it sounds good.

I had a boss once that was allergic to natural latex - so - no garlic, no onions, no potatoes - I think I'd ask to be euthanised.

I am fond of elephant garlic, it is a bit milder and good roasted.
Leeks are also milder and I am learning to cook with them.

MrRodgers -> RE: World's Most Powerful Antioxidant (1/31/2009 8:58:05 PM)

Not to burst everybody's bubble about garlic, I like it too...in moderation, but...

...a study in Scandinavia showed that people fed an abundance of antioxidants actually later had a higher incidence of cancer than another group fed a normal diet with average antioxidant content.

Like everything...too much can be a bad thing.

In fact most supplements including many antioxidants...promote healthy living yet have never been proven to prevent desease. All research can do, is try to improve the numbers.

FR:

I love garlic, and I add it to most things that I cook.  What's weird though is I despise garlic's demonic cousin, the onion.  Despise is not even a strong enough word for how I feel about that noxious weed.  I am not that picky, but I will not eat anything that has that disgusting, Hell spawned herb in it.

Leek soup with fresh bread and cheese...yum yum...

And I wanted to mention that garlic is a lovely plant to grow in your garden.

I must admit I have never tried (or heard of) Garlic Ice Cream...

SB how could you like garlic and hate onion? The two are just about inseperable for me. Did something happen to you as a  kid or something ?

slaveboyforyou -> RE: World's Most Powerful Antioxidant (1/31/2009 9:46:20 PM)

Term, I've always hated them.  I don't like the taste, the smell, or the texture of them.  My entire life, I've had friends and family try and sneak them into dishes (which pisses me off to no end), but I always notice them.  I just can't stand them.  Like I said, I'm not that picky about food.  However onions are a taboo food for me.  It's not a convenient food to dislike; people put them in everything.  I have to tell waiters in restaurants that I'm allergic to them, so they make sure it's not in my meal.

My best friend is exactly like that as well.  He has TRIED to like them, but can't.  They taste like absolute shit to him, although he loves garlic.
