Should a person be judged on what they were and did in the past or what they are now ?

I believe people should be judged strictly on the facts of the case as stipulated in the courtroom.  As far as final judgment, pretty much everything will be in the past.  Other than those two instances I don't believe that the judging of people is appropriate.

I'm going to say both. What we were has contributed to who we are, good and bad, boring and exciting. If someone got a degree in say English at and early age and wanted to go on to a Master's in say History, their knowledge of how to write papers and learn new things, of pedagogy would be helpful and their knowledge of the written word would also be a benefit. But that was all then. Learning History will be a whole new game and they will be judged (graded) on what they do now.

Will I hold something against someone for something they did in the past that i find distasteful? Maybe. Will i do it for something they do to me now? More than likely, if it was just to be mean.

I dont think it is great to judge anyone. Either you get someone or you dont. Either you are drawn to someone or not. Whatever they did may make you stick around or move away from that person but you dont have to judge or be judged for this natural process to happen.

The question's way too general for anything but a very general answer, which would be "both".

I tend to take people as I find them, Aneirin.  I see who they are from the day I meet them, forwards.

As a far broader question, I think judgement would have to based on a complete picture.  Both.

Too many variables.

The context is important. I am caught walking out without paying for something in a store, even though I paid for everything else. With the cops it's found that I have had a decent job for four years and the last job for over ten, and haven't been even arrested for theft as an adult.

Now what if I was someone known to shoplift, been busted for it more than once and actually did make an honest mistake. Things would most likely go differently wouldn't they ?

That is how mistakes in the past can come to haunt you in the future, is it right, or fair ? Or is that YOUR question ? There are billions of possibilities. For example if you have crashed every jet you ever flew you shouldn't really be a pilot. You gave no specifics whatsoever in that regard. Do you mean in law ? Or something else.

I think the question is too broad and not specific enough.  The past of a person may or may not be of profound importance in their present.  What life changing decisions did they make?  What were positive experiences and what do they count as painful ones?  Have they learned anything in the process?

Hm....so if Adolf (you know who) lived and became a great humanitarian, all would be forgiven?

Eh.....nvm...

The question is slightly irrelevant since most of the time only the individual knows their past. When I see people talking of judging from the present onwards I'm a bit sceptical considering how I've seen people treated in reality. This here is supposed to be a true reflection of the real world.

Both, it depends what it was that they were or did in the past. I know thats a flimsy answer but its true. Some things belong in the past and somethings are too significant to ignore.

a person is his past and present
his past makes him what he is now.

Some people are limited in that respect yes but some can disregard who they were as just being who they were.

If you are using the logic that everything in life is a lesson then you are ignoring the fact some repeat their mistakes over and over again.

the "self" we present now is simply our past, aged a bit.

"his past makes him what he is now. "

Thus it follows that his present makes him what he will be in the future.

At least that's something we can work with, as nobody can change the past.

personally, if someone is inclined to judge me, I would hope that they would do so based on who I am now and how far I've come from my past,  rather than what my past holds

This topic has been beaten around in one form or another several times. Interestingly enough, it gets different answers from folks at different times. Maybe because the answer is relative to whatever or whomever they have in mind at that given time. One thread may have a "its wrong to judge", while another from the same person contains an exercise in judgment when someone posts about Dom A or Dom B having a history of lying, stringing submissives along, or just hurting them.

Does the past matter? Yes.

People judge all the time. They may be as kink acceptable as one can be, as racially and socially acceptable as one can be, but put someone or something they fear, despise or just can't stand in front of them and the scales come out. The word recidivism exists for a reason. Past actions do not necessarily foretell future ones, and in many cases even if they did, it wouldn't ncessarily be a bad thing. It depends on what those past actions were, when they were, the circumstances surrounding them, and behavior in the interim. Judging usually isn't the issue. Condemnation is. Even then, some behaviors are so reprehensible that it may not even be condemnation, but more so separating ones self from the mindset that allowed it. You didn't give much direction in what past meant. Past is generic. The reality of whether you do separate yourself from someone else over a given issue is going to be specific.

If they haven't learned from their mistakes, well then history pretty much repeats itself and you get no recognition from Me.

However they may change, there are some past sins I simply cannot ignore or forgive--I am after all horribly human.

So sadly, I look at past, present and the road to the future.
