I've had issues with AVG in the past, and I don't trust it anymore. Spybot is... ok, but it really hasn't kept up with the curve and I found running it to be time I could have spent running the programs that will actually find everything. CrapCleaner (CCleaner) is win. Housecall always chokes on me, and I'm suspicious of the efficacy of a browser-based scanner anyway; but if it works for you I'm not naysaying it. I repeat my recommendation to switch to lower-profile browsers like Maxthon and Flock; if you're a firefox addon junkie, both will make you happier than a pig in the happy pig place.

Firefox I run with minimal add ons, only the ones that are of use, I also run the slimmest version of the browser I can find, too much crap just annoys me and puts more load on my under resourced system. The same with Vista, I now run it in classic mode, as all I want in a puter is that it works and works quickly.

I'll throw my preference in the hat along with the zillion others recommended. This one cost money ($49.00 USD I think), but we run "Bit defender" internet security. I have a multiple seat license so we run it on all the house computers and have been extremely pleased with it. I'm not certain about this year, but in previous years it was rated either at the top or near the top, by many of the Geek sources. http://www.bitdefender.com/

I wasn't being entirely serious with that comment - it's just one of those things Mac uses are supposed to say, right? That said, I've historically encountered way more 'problems' as a Windows OS user than I ever have using the Mac OS. Obviously, no OS is infallible. There are definitely some security vulnerabilities in OS X (see this article detailing how OS X was hacked via root in under 30 minutes) but at the moment, Mac users are still at a lower level of risk from attack in general than Windows users. The overwhelming majority of malware out there targets Windows specifically. One reason for this (amongst others) is, financial incentive - if you're in the malware business, it's much more profitable to target the dominant platform. And Windows still has a good 80-90% of the market share. Can't afford to get complacent, though - as the Mac market share continues to rise, we'll likely see a corresponding rise in Mac-specific malware. [>:]

make sure that the program you get is updated . then start your system in safe mode with networking, then run the program.

I had the same thing wrong with my computer. One day it restarted all by itself, and then when it would get to the logon screen it would be black, It would try to come on but alas to no avail and it would restart.. I finally got it to start up in Default mode and then I ran Spybot Search and Destroy.. Hijack this, and My anti-virus that is through my ISP provider - Charter Communications. Just to say It fount over 60 viruses. and Spybot Search and Destroy is an awesome program. Free too!
