ALAstella -> Due to wintry weather conditions.... (2/2/2009 7:04:16 AM)

.. there's chaos in London. Trains are being cancelled, most of the bus network has been suspended, though much of the London Underground system is still running 'with minor delays'.. People are not going to work, or to school, because if you need to get anywhere by pubic transport.. forget it.

What are the wintry weather conditons? It's snowing, there's a few inches of snow settled on the ground, and all of a sudden it's like some major disaster is taking place.

WTF?

What is wrong with these people? Are they one sandwich short of a picnic or what?

Wintry weather conditions? Of course there's wintry weather conditons.. it is still winter, is it not? I mean, what are they expecting for this time of year.. a heatwave? When were they expecting snow? In the middle of July?

This is the host city for the Olympic games in 2012, is it not? Ever wondered why Londoners are typically not good at events typical for the Winter Olympics?

Ala, who is from Poland, is sitting here laughing and shaking her head. She is convinced that we are all nutters.

But is this what it's like elsewhere? Does this happen anywhere else in the world?

Thoughts, comments.. etc

Happens in the states as well.  I live in NYC, unless there's a major catastrophe (buildings attacked, or alien invasion, or thermonuclear war) it's pretty much business as usual.

A friend of mine attending school in Essex emailed to tell me that they got a snow day today, which is hilarious, since we're from a place that regularly gets to -40...

They do they same in Vancouver though. Transit ceases to exist when it snows.

I'm always amazed by stuff like this. I'm in the arse end of nowhere but the gritters have been out through the night and the roads are pretty much clear. How come a huge city like London can't cope and comes to a stand still. Baffling.

DC, MD & VA are notorious for panicking at the 1st HINT of snow!
Even the President was shocked that his girl's school was closed last week & made a comment that "DC should have Chicago mentality".

Everyone RUSHES to the stores, stocks up on toilet paper, milk & bread like they're going to be housebound for weeks w/o a break.[8|]

caro44 -> RE: Due to wintry weather conditions.... (2/2/2009 7:39:24 AM)

It is the same in Tennessee,  let the weather people say it's snowing in Memphis and the people here in Nashville go nuts, Plus most of the don't know how to drive in that kind of weather. Go Figure.

BitchGoddessD -> RE: Due to wintry weather conditions.... (2/2/2009 7:54:53 AM)

Thanks for the laugh.  It takes alot to close down the schools here.  The University never closes - ok maybe once every few years.  It is usually extremely cold temperatures that force the closings.

I'd have to agree with Obama's feelings since I'm close to Chicago.  Come on people.  It's just a little snow and ice.  When everything around is completely covered with ice then it's a good idea to stay home.  lol

barelynangel -> RE: Due to wintry weather conditions.... (2/2/2009 8:03:27 AM)

Sounds like TN is when it snows.  I always told my mom we grew up in the wrong place (Chicago) down here they close schools with just the THINK that its going to snow or be really cold.  Believe me coming from Chicago this place is Kansas and Toto has no clue what's going on.

They literally buy out the stores when there is a threat of snow.  I keep telling them being snowed in means you CAN'T open the front door lol.

However, the issue is i guess that they aren't prepared with salt or manpower or trucks etc to deal with heavy snow etc.  In Chicago i was always use to having salt on the ground etc.

Atlanta is the same... everything shuts down, the stores are cleaned out... it's hilarious!

Did you listen to wogan this morning? took him an hour and a half to get into work because not one of the streets in london had been gritted. Mental really. I think the argument is we so rarely get any snow why bother preparing for it.

Mind its  a nightmare here too, no one is on the roads because its so snowy.

Its pretty though isnt it.

FR

..as a British ex-pat living in snowy BC, all i can say is HAHAHAHAHA.........the CBC keeps showing pictures of London where bits of grass poke up through the snow. Had more than a foot of snow fall last night where i am right now....and other than selecting the boots with better grip (foot of snow on a few inches of glare ice..) no-one is changing their behaviour at all......

That mad rush to the store always amuses me. "When was the last time Iowa had so much snow that you couldn't get to a store for a week?" I ask. Or, "Do people really keep that little food and TP in their house that, if they cannot go to the store for a day or two, they would be in serious trouble?"

Two storms ago I made the mistake of thinking I wanted to stop in and pick up another box of SoySilk and an onion I needed to make soup, on my way home. You would have thought we were expecting a nuclear attack and going to have to go underground for years, given the madhouse that grocery store was.

Right now, because the bridge is out, our road is a virtual dead end. The state has decided it doesn't need to maintain it while the bridge is out. Only twice have I had to use the 4 wheel drive to get to work and we've had a fair bit of snow this year. I haven't missed any work due to weather this year(dammit), not even with a couple ice storms. Just been late a few times so far.

Some people are just bigger wussies when it comes to rough weather.

Termyn8or -> RE: Due to wintry weather conditions.... (2/2/2009 10:05:41 AM)

Interestingly something crossed my mind the other day about whiney hineys , they moan that it's sub zero, but that's celcius. Over here we got our first day in about two months that we got up to zero celsius. Zero is thirty two here and in Cleveland and we would just about call that a heat wave.

I like when I am at work and see all the school closings being announced. They used to never close the schools, I mean almost never. Used to maybe when we got two feet of snow, but now they close them just because it is snowing. We got our share of whiney hineys here as well I guess.

The rule used to be if your front door will open, you got no excuse. They might forgive you for being five minutes late if you had to call a neighbor to shovel your front door out, shovel your driveway, clear off and warm up your car and then thaw out again. Yup five minutes is reasonable.

Of course the oldtimers always sieze the opportunity to have at us "When I was a kid we walked through two feet of snow about five miles to get to school, and it was uphill both ways".
