As one who has been highly critical of Obama's recent "double standard" nominations, I do have to give him credit for his actions today. He said the right things to the American People when he said he made a mistake. <Daschle> Altho he denies it, I * hope* he had something to do with Daschle removing his name. Whatever Pres. Obama's motives were, whether they be to save face or because he came to understand that he was not setting the tone he said he would, he said the right thing. Refreshing to hear some one in a high office admit they are not perfect.

snip:
"I consider this a mistake on my part, one that I intend to fix and correct and make sure that we're not screwing up again," Obama said. "Ultimately I have to take responsibility for a process that resulted in us not having a (health and human services) secretary at a time when people need relief on their health care costs.
"So this is a mistake -- probably not the first one I'm going to be making in this office, but what I'm absolutely committed to doing is fixing it," he said. "

I take these problems as major fuck ups on the part of his staff. They pick the Best viable candidates but don't vet them deeply enough.

Good for him. Bravo! I can respect him more for admitting a mistake, and not caring if it gives political ammo to the other side. Maybe he will realize there is one side, and that is the American people.

Well, the IRS audited Daschle in 2006 and found no problems. It wasn't until  last Novembe-rish, when Obama said he wanted Daschle on his team, that Mr. Daschle claims he remembered that he forgot to mention the limo and driver he didn't claim and other income he " forgot " to report.

In Geisner's case it was the Obama team that found the tax evasion, at which time Mr. Geisner supposedly made good on his back taxes. Altho neither geisner or Daschle have paid the full fines and penalties you or I would.

So I am not willing to completely throw the Obama team under the bus. My problem lies with them being nominated in direct conflict with the New President's Lobbying policy and the tax issues. We are suppose to learn form our mistakes and hopefully Obama has.

Seems like an oxymoron to me..."the pick the Best viable candidates but don't vet them deeply enough"!!  Isn't the purpose of "vetting" to enable the President to pick nominee's for hight office and not have to worry about skeletons in their closet.  My serious concern here is that "vetting" is an intelligence like operation, gathering pertinent data on an individual, running it through the mixer, and making sure it comes out clean on the other side.  Mr. Panetta, the new CIA "Intelligence Head" also headed the team of people vetting candidates. Do we have to be concerned about his lack of in-depth understanding and analysis of American politicians, much less understanding and questioning the reports he will be getting everyday from the heads of desks?   Or maybe he is not there to build the C.I.A. but to demolish the enterprise as Jimmy Carter and his Admiral did in the 1970's.  It's been two weeks since the first oath of office was taken by Obama, and the public seems to be having some second doubts already with his popularity sliding quickly...and his "honeymoon" possibly not lasting too many moons!

Obama is a creation of the media. It is not clear at all if there is any substance in real Obama. He obviously  has no clear idea what to do. It shows his weakness trying to recycle these Clinton era corrupt politicians.

"The Public" meaning you, Sanity, Rush, Hannity, Obama, Drudge, and the freaks who write the Little Green Footballs blog?okey-doke.

You know, I read enough partisan trash on Bondage.com. Bush never, ever made a mistake, and Obama has already caused the destruction of Civilization as we know it.

I've been a Centrist for a good part of my adult life, and have, in the past, voted for the person I thought would do the best job. But since that paragon of family values Gingrich and his gang stifled all opposition opinion on the Hill, to the extent of not even allowing Dems into supposedly "bipartisan" meetings (I could find an interview with a Senator who was actually there, and knows what arrogant party hacks the Repubs were(when Dems were not allowed a voice in Congress, the Repubs effectively disenfranchised all the citizens who didn't vote for them), but you wouldn't listen to it, and if you did, you wouldn't believe it because it's against your ideology, whatever that is).

If I'm a Partisan now, it's because I have become completely disgusted with the blind, uncritical obeisance to the party that the radical right displays. In the USSR, everyone went along with, or even joined the party, because it was the only way to play the game. In Hitler's Germany and in Right-wing America, the party was/is supported enthusiatically. I have not read a single criticism of Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney, or any of the Bushevik gang by any Radical Rightist. The only concession to reality I've heard goes something like "well, maybe Iraq was a mistake BUT Saddam had WMDs so..."

I'm thoroughly disgusted, sickened, by the incessent whine-drone-dirge from the Right about such trivial shit as "Obama didn't wear a flag pin! He's a Socialist commie anti-American terrorist-loving traitor!" It's hateful, divisive, damn near always untrue, and I'm fucking fed up. Maybe other people want to read the drivel that issues forth from you and Sanity and ColdWarrior and MissSepphora and the rest, but I'm not wasting my time anymore. I've tried to find something redeeming in all the negative vomitus righties spew forth, but I can't, and it's not possible to hold a rational conversation

Pity I can't say what I really think. Off to Ignoreland you go.

President Obama is taking more flack in 2 weeks than any other President that I have
seen in my lifetime.
I have stated I expect to NOT agree with all his decisions.

I am glad and proud of the fact that President Obama came forth and publically said he made a mistake.

After years of seeing his predecessor do hundreds of things that he should have apologized for and did not, I think President Obama certainly is on the right track!

I for one am bummed.

This means Obama isn`t perfect.

I guess I`ll have to console myself with him manning up and accepting responsibility.

Mz Mia, you already stated so eloquently what I wished to say that no further response is needed.

Rod Blagojevich would make great replacement for Daschle candidacy. Daschle was a lobbyist for drug business while Blago actually tried to help people to get cheaper drugs from Canada.

That's right Owner, sometimes I forget!
He is a mere mortal, like everyone else.

He is allowed to make mistakes, like every single other President has done!

So true!  I find it refreshing from either side when they come clean and admit a mistake and move on.  They're not gods, they're human.   Hearing them admit it is a good thing.

I always have been disappointed in Bill wagging his finger at me and lying ... sigh .. if he'd admitted he'd had an indiscretion and was working with his wife on it, nothing more would have been able to come of it.  But he dug a mighty big hold to climb out of.

Hopefully *someone* out there has learned that lesson ...

After voters gave Tom Daschle the boot from office he made 5 million dollars in just 2 years as a lobbyist for drug companies. Just the type of person we needed to run HHS. So much for Obamas changing the way things are done in Washington..
