Hello everyone, Im writing an essay in a philosophy class called "Love, Sex and Relationships" Anyways the essay question I am doing, is "What constitutes sexual 'perversion'? Are sexual perversions inherently bad or can they serve some valuable purpose?" Any input would be greatly appreciated. Ill post the essay once its finished. Its not due till March 24th, so lots of time for discussions.

forgive me.. I'm a horrible curmudgeon.. but.. are you meant to solicit help from others on this assignment, or write it yourself and do your own research?  Will you be giving others credit when you write it.. for example ... "idea provided by ..."
how will you reference the input of others in your essay?

Thank you for asking about the "credit" issue. There is a form for citing websites and personal comments on those websites, but it can be the pass or fail on a paper if opinion is given as fact and if either aren't properly referenced. Perhaps a book list might be more help?

haha thats an excellent question, Im not going to take anything word for word, nor paraphrase, simply because I cant, since obviously this isnt an academic journal, ergo it isnt a "legit source" to use as a footnote. However Im just asking for your own imput of if you think there are some valuable purposes for perversions. It would be quite entertaining to see a list of sources like of Madame4a, Washington DC. 2009. That wouldnt work at all lol.

You would be amazed at the papers I have seen that have in fact had citations like that. My favorites are all in text file somewhere from a group of papers written about video games and violence. *sigh* Some people, and I am taking about adults that should and do know better, just have brain freeze sometimes.

which definition of perversion are you working with as your premise; dictionary, psychological, sociological, sexological, historical western or primitive or eastern, or something else or a combo? Just curious since knowing the context of "perversion" will make it easier to answer your question.

actually, legit papers source 'annonymous' sources in more or less that way all the time.
A paper on the effects of the economy on street people, for instance, might list a lot of first names and cities: 'Mary, Washington, DC', ect. Generally it is in a seperate list of 'primary sources'. I would be careful about turning in an improperly cited paper. WEre you paying attention during Eng 101?

It is one thing to quote someone, or do an anon, city, but gimme a break when it comes to pretending to cite the quote.

If this message board isn't a 'legit source' then why use it?

Please define what constitutes a legitmate source.

Strictly speaking this message board and its threads are very enlightening. Many of the people contributing to them do seem to have been there and done that, so they know what they are talking about. So you are correct. People here can offer useful and valid opinions. If not 'legit' opinions.

Seems to me you're going to need to do some comparisons between the writings of the various "sex doctors."  Medical doctors won't have a clue, as this is a philosophical paper you're writing.  You MAY even be able to do a little research into the OLD philosphers (Plato, etc.) and their opinions. Could be interesting. <g>

It certainly is a 'legit' source if you cite it correctly, it just shouldn't be your only source but you already know that. People's notes, diaries, e-mails, and verbal answers (interviews, whatever) can all be sources in the most academically rigorous papers if they are used and cited properly. <Tosses an MLA handbook to you.>

And I think that because you specifically asked for ideas you must cite the board at least as a work consulted.

I actually found D/s in its proper form though writing an essay on sexual deviance for anthropology. In regards to the citing sources it depends how you are going to use the infomation here.

I did intereviews with people online so i used psudonames and interview transcript. I get the feeling that you want people to write your essay for you. Where is the premise? Also I do psychology and i dont see how that question would come into it. The differance between nature verses nurture maybe? Seriously if you want help you have to be more specific. What is the ACTUAL definition of perversion that you are using? Who's theories? What have you got on the for and against side?

Im not doing your work for you and I am sure that you can see other people wont either.

There is one and only one purpose to Eng 101, and a useless one in your case. It is designed to teach you to properly cite so you don't get kicked out of college. Maybe the link will help. <sigh>
what the hell is risks and disasters, and how does that keep you from getting kicked out of college?

A "legit" source is one that is known as refereed, which is an academic paper that is approved by various scholars in the field ergo my actual sources will come from books and online articles from my schools library, I just wanted to post the question to get a kick start. If I wanted someone to write the essay for me Id surely find the nerd in my class to do so...

I've published refereed crap, and I support the posts of feydeplume and tsatske.  Not everything I cite is itself refereed.  It's just stuff that was thought up by not-me.  That's why I cite it.

IMHO it is whatever the moral society deems is allowable. If you go back to the Romans, Greeks, Turks, Egyptians--they participated in things that today we outlaw and yet once we shunned gay relationships and today are accepting.
 
I once took a class in moral ethics---it demonstrates how governments used religion and control of sexual proclivities to rule the masses. May be well worth some quick look ups, email Me on the other side and I can send you the name of the textbook and some of the references from it for your research.
