lets face it. I'm not getting any younger! What are your make up and beauty tips that you have learned over the years to look better, rested or to keep your makeup applied well?

here are a couple of mine.

Buy lipstick colored lipliner. Dont just line the lips. Fill them in with the pencil. than when your lipstick wears off you still have color. Or I use Milani bright shine lip pencils. The reds and pinks really hold.

If you are going to a wedding or out nice and you have a big ole honking zit. Color it with eyebrow pencil and call it a beauty mark!

I have a cousin that has written books and is the Ralph Nader of the cosmetics indusrty. She has been on all the talk shows. She swears by 2% hydrogen peroxide for achne and Milk of Magnesia as a facial Mask.

Now tell me your secrets!

Neem Cream/oil for anything skin related. Anything! Dry skin, pimple, whatever, neem will fix it. I use it daily whether anything is up or not, it's just so good.

Yves St Laurent Touche Eclat is the one and only makeup item that I use every single day, it makes you look awake on an hour of sleep.

I stopped dyeing my hair, it's its natural colour for the first time since I was 9, and as a result its always super soft and shiny. But I got lucky and have an awesome hair colour. If you were born with a less than awesome hair colour, henna dyes are usually easier on your hair (but if you try to dye over them with regular dye your hair will turn green. You've been warned.)

Use sunscreen! I'd rather be pale than leathery. I know some girls my age who tan and are already starting to look like death.

Dressing according to your body type is always a good thing, just because they make it in your size doesn't mean you have to wear it.

I drink lots of water and eat avacado? Exercise is also a bonus.

From my perspective,  a woman's beauty starts with her eyes.  Yea, I know men start with the butt and work their way up from there... but beyond the superficial, anything a woman can do to bring focus on her eyes with hairstyle, eye brow shape, or eye makeup might be something to consider.

Extra virgin olive oil to whiten teeth.  Put some on a cloth or paper towel and rub your teeth for a couple minutes. Then wipe them with a clean paper towel to remove the oil.  Instant results.

Natural soaps - specifically daily use of Oatmeal, Goat's Milk, & Honey on my face- the oatmeal acts as a very, Very gentle exfoliator.

I rarely wear makeup, and when I do I remove it asap with an oil mix (grapeseed, olive, and macadamia nut oils in a 30/60/10 ratio) and then wash thoroughly to remove any excess oil that hasn't soaked into the skin.  Having some portion of the oil - since it's skin friendly vegitable oils rather than a petrolium based product - soak in helps a bunch with keeping the crows feet and such to a minimum.

When I do wear makeup, I wear the least amount I can get away with, and prefer to use mineral based that have no petrolium products in them.

Sunscreen.  Sunscreen.  Sunscreen.  High SPF sunscreen - because limiting UV exposure is the first step in keeping the skin young.

Twice a month I deep clean using a cucumber/avocado mask - cucumber extract and avocado oil in pink rhassoul clay, with enough distilled water added just prior to putting on the mask that it's the right consistancy to spread, followed by thorough washing once the mask has been removed.  The cucumber helps draw out impurities, as does the pink rhassoul clay, while the small amount of oil in it helps remoisturize the skin.

Once a month, I use a sugar scrub on my face for deep exfoliation to remove dead skin.  It's avocado oil, raw turbadino sugar, and organic raw honey.  I use the same scrub once a week on my arms and legs while in the shower for the same reason.  The rough grain sugar sloughs off any dead skin cells, while the avocado oil helps keep the skin moisturized really well.

Daily moisturizing of my face with all natural lotion, whether I'm planning on wearing makeup that day or not, and prior to putting on sunscreen.  If I start noticing wrinkles getting much worse than usual - a spot treatment of straight olive squalane goes on that spot.  Olive squalane is one of the closest oils to human sebum (the oil we naturally produce.)

First, I am blessed with great genes which I thank the goddess for everyday--when I was young I broke every rule, I did go to bed with My makeup on, no I didn't age 10 years for every night I did that. When I was in My 40's I stopped wearing basecoat and powder, with a new baby-who had time? I have big blue eyes and always continued to use eye shadow, mascara. These days, 3 times a week I use a deep scrub, everyday I use a bit of moisturizer-( no more that the size of the tip of your little finger)--at night I use the same amount of a light night cream---I use a deep blue eyeliner at the corners of My eyes--its from Milani too ( as I have blue eyes) and mascara---lips are some deeper shade of a gloss--Burts Bees lip shimmer---Ive discovered Sally Hansen's lip inflation--I just find lipstick too heavy anymore ( or I can get away with biting My lips for quick color) and I've just changed My haircolor to a deep red that makes the blue eyes pop---I've noticed, I stop more than a few men in their tracks again--not bad for an old broad. post-its work just as well as blotting papers for when you get a little too much glow during the day.  and they don't leave any gunky powder on your face.

My favourite.........those cheap brown paper towels in most public restrooms! They work great and we all have an endless supply of them.

Makeup, less is more, but for most of us, a good foundation is a miracle worker. High priced beauty products are NOT that much better than less expensive. Ask a good makeup artist. I dated a model for years, all the makeup people I met had mostly drug store brands in their cases.

For skin care, I ONLY use Isomers products. I know the woman that created the company and it's products. I've been using their products for over 5 years and my skin looks better than it did twenty years ago. I get complimented on my skin all the time.

Water, water water. Drink it. Smoking, don't do it. Sugar, eat less of it. Fresh produce and raw nuts, eat alot of them. You really are what you eat and it shows on your face dramatically.

Avoid the sun period. Big brimmed hats, long sleeves when possible, sun screen. I buy alot of men's, long sleeved white cotton dress shirts in sizes far bigger. They protect and keep me cool.

My biggest pet peeve. Women, as we age, we need to constantly assess and occasionally change our hair and makeup styles. Nothing is more pathetic than seeing a 40something woman, with long permed hair, fluffy curling ironed bangs, and blue eye shadow.........all from the 80's!  What was hot and cool when we were in high school does not stay hot and cool decades later on an older body.

Hair colouring........if it doesn't show up naturally on someone's head, and your not into the goth look or trailer trash hooker playboy bunny thing....probably not a good idea. Blonde hair with dark roots, always yuck. Hair that is primarily gray, cheaply dyed red, usually ends up some odd shade of peach or pink. Spend the extra money for a professional. Really black hair looks good on very few people.

Last but not least............Low slung jeans and tight t-shirts, only look good on VERY fit bodies. On the rest of us.....yuck.

VirginPotty -> RE: Beauty tips (2/4/2009 9:13:57 AM)

I had read something for subtle lipstick...............outline your mouth w/a liner & then fill in w/chapstick. It looks natural & keeps your mouth from chapping!  I love the look!
My mother always used Oil of Olay and I love the stuff too! She aged WONDERFULLY & I hope to look half as nice.

KatyLied -> RE: Beauty tips (2/4/2009 9:23:36 AM)

Keeping skin hydrated, with moisturizer and drinking plenty of water.  Even though my skin is naturally oily, I've found that using moisturizer helps my skin from getting oily (weird, I know).  I only use Clinique products, have for years, love it.

myotherself -> RE: Beauty tips (2/4/2009 9:49:45 AM)

As someone who suffers from really dry skin and patches of psoriasis on my face, I swear by vitamin E oil, two or three times a day.  Just a touch on the dry parts and skin looks wonderful.

Unfortunately I can't wear foundation or powder (with psoriasis it just looks gross), but a light face-quality self tan from Avon works wonders!  Evens out skin tone and can even act as a light moisturiser.

Actually i never liked the "made up" look for me. I use a good foundation, subtle lip color and blush, but play up my eyes with a few coats of mascara and a brownish/black eye liner, then a tiny bit of a light tan eyeshadow in the corners of my eyes.

When you're riding the "bologna pony", never lean forward and down.  Your face hangs down and you will look old and like you need a facelift.  If you lean forward on your hands, tip your head back a bit.

Don't smoke
Don't drink
Get 8 hours of sleep
Keep hydrated
Use sunscreen in the summer and winter
Keep your skin moist with lotions
Always clean your face thoroughly from all makeup before sleeping
Protect your skin from extreme elements
Eat healthy
Take lukewarm showers instead of steaming ones

If you live a healthy lifestyle your body will thank you for it and you'll look and glowing and young looking.
