It's not the only reason, but the commercialization issue is a valid one. And it's not that it "used to be" OK until it became commercialized, it was designed to be commercial.

I think valentines day is stupid. I thought so when I was 5 and introduced to it in school and I still think so now at age 46.

Although, if I knew it was about the slaying of a catholic priest.............

Good point! Maybe it's not ALL bad.

Would one say the same thing, I wonder, about the murder of a rabbi or an imam?

hardbodysub -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/8/2009 7:02:12 PM)

Well, obviously this is tongue in cheek.
Also, I get special rights on this topic, having been raised Catholic, with one parent almost insanely so. To answer your question, I view all organized religions with a strong sense of ambivalence, but there clearly are some that are less tolerant of any jokes made about them.

Who else finds Valentine's Day a pain in the ass, an obligation rather than an opportunity, the antithesis of romance? Just because the Hallmark Company wanted to make a bundle of money, we're obligated to "be romantic" and do something special on the specific day that they chose.

I enjoy romance, surprises, thoughtful gifts, all of that, but HATE when someone else tells me when or how I'm supposed to do it. The existence of Valentine's Day is a bane to real romance, IMO. Takes all the fun out of it when it's EXPECTED.

Who else out there is a member of this politically incorrect club? Please don't tell me that I'm the only one who hates this contrived holiday!

i hate Valentine's Day with a passion, for the very reasons you do.  It is nothing more than Madison Avenue's way of getting us back to shopping after Xmas.  They need a reason to get into our wallets again and this is what they came up with......blah......[:'(].....

I'ts commercial, it's without any redeeming romance value, and it's for those who are brain-dead.

Any relationship i've been in i've always requested that We not celebrate Valentine's Day.  i have asked that if it's flowers Hy wants to give me, if it's a nice dinner Hy wants to take me out to, if hy wants to give me chocolates, then that can be done just as easily on March 19, or January 28, or any other day of the year besides February 14th.  It takes no imagination whatsoever to do those things when the marketing firms of every flower shop and card producer in the Universe is blaring out their pitches on TV, radio and the print media.

Sorry, it's just not a Holiday i'm into....bah...humbug.....
I have been saying that for YEARS!!!!!!
its just a ploy to get the sheelple to part with their money.
the zales commercial, " she will know you love her if you spend $ 10 grand on a tennis bracelet for her"
if the bitch needs 10 grand to know I love her , then one of us is really fucked up.

You didn't get any Valentines in home room I'm guessing.

Bad guess.

It's just a rant looking for kindred spirits, man.

I'm sure you love your mother a lot; do you hate Mother's Day for "obligating" you to be a thoughtful son?

You presume a lot. How do you know I even knew my mother?

I started this thread so I wouldn't rain on the parades of the Valentine's Day lovers' threads in the other forums. You could follow the example.

Dude , some people have nothing better to do then to respond to posts with either negativity or what they believe are witty responces.
Negative attention ( to some) is better then none.

last night i signed my 2 yr olds name to over 30 valentines while he grabbed for the pen, bellowing "MINE"!! [8|]

Ha ha....I remember those days.  :)

OP:

Yeah, I kind of agree, but I don't think it angers me or anything like that.  I have a strange hang up about the whole gift-giving and gift-receiving thing.  I find it uncomfortable and embarassing, and like there is pressure to behave as common star-struck lovers, and I just don't deal with that too well.   Yet if I do something special for someone or pick them up a gift that I know they would like, on just a regular day, I don't feel weird about it at all.

Anyway, I do give my daughter a couple of gifts for Valentines day, but that's a completely different thing and it's enjoyable to me.

NuevaVida -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/8/2009 9:26:30 PM)

I don't HATE the day, but I do think it's contrived.  I'd rather just be good to each other all year round.  When I was an executive assistant I hated Secretary's Day for that same reason.  I don't want Hallmark telling others when to show appreciation for me - it just feels disingenuous.

As for the poster who asked about mothers day - I always hated mother's day.  My mom was not a kind woman when she raised us and I hated the pressure of having to thank her for....for what, exactly?  Now I adore her, but we do stuff for each other all the time.  In fact, the last two mothers days she actually declared "daughter's day" and we took each other out, which made our day sweet and unique.

For the most part, I prefer spontaneity over hallmark holidays.

I love Valentine's day.  25 years ago, this coming Valentine's day, my 2nd was born.  I have loved watching her grow into a competent young women, wife & mother.

A day to celebrate love!   What's to hate?!    I used to dislike it, but now I love everybody...   Almost.  [:D]  M

Welcome to the western world

MissMorrigan -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/9/2009 2:27:11 AM)

I haven't a religious bone in my body (the rumours regarding the priest I seduced are unfounded, I never got to the stage of defrocking him, despite his willingness to allow me) and celebrate Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day - Does that make me hypocritical? I'm sure it does to some. I'm a whore for chocolate, who can really blame me?

Aneirin -> RE: Valentine's Day Haters Unite! (2/9/2009 2:36:27 AM)

Hey, I just thought, all us haters, our thinking is wrong in this present world and it's difficulties. We should be doing our thing and spending money to help the economy, well at least that is what the know alls say we should be doing, saving and spending to get ourselves out of this financial mess.

Valentine's is depressing.  Several of my Worst break ups have happened on Valentine's day.  Yes, that's right - I had a slew of ex's that specifically waited until valentine's day - the "official day of Romance" to do things like... oh... take me to dinner, and publically dump me while there by having my replacement join us half way though - and it was planned that way.  That one almost turned into another Valentine's Day Masacre - Oklahoma Style.

Rhi.,honey, you've , obviously, been hanging witha slew of assholes. If I was on the jury, though, I would acquit you for an Oklahoma style VD day massacre under such circumstances.

CJ, honey, I know - that's why I rarely ever date these days .... and why I quit believing in "romance" years ago...... and seldom consider the concept of a relationship with anyone (male or female) ever again...... and basically have little use for the male population except as living disposable sex toys.....

I figure I coulda gotten a complete aquittal from a jury of my peers

Rhi, honey pot, will you be my Valentine ? [sm=hearts.gif]

That's a popular fetish for many sub males.  Want me to point some your way?  [:D]
