I don't see any need to get into my feelings and responses to those who disrespect those who serve.

On the historical side though, I had an ancestor from both sides of my family, on both sides of the war, present at Appomattox Courthouse when Lee surrendered.

Dear God. I honestly don't understand some people.

Gratitude to those that serve would imply an intrinsic belief in the good of government, something people here have regularly shown great scepticism towards. People have their own reasons for going to war and they’d probably say their only loyalty once there is to one another not the cause. So what am I grateful for and is this war making me safer?
Abuse of those that serve is unacceptable but this is another issue altogether separate from how grateful we should all be. War is highly political and to think those conducting it can be left out of the politics is naive.

We can debate the pro/con of  war, give our opinion as to should we have or should we not have gone into a war; the need to go etc.  However, while debate should not end when the firing starts there should not be attacks on the troops in the media or by politicans.

quote:

The idiot in the street dishonoring the troops and the flag they serve is only a bit worse in my view than the politician on the airways demeaning the mission that most of the troops believe in that hurts morale.

I can’t really reconcile the two statements above made in the same post.
If journalists cover the gruesome details of war maybe that is all there is to war. Some though think it’s a conspiracy and we should be instead focussing on personnel of the war machine building schools, hospitals etc.

You may not agree with the war. You may not agree with the government. But we all owe a huge debt of gratitude to those who have served and those who are currently doing so.
