At least every week seems like, someone is ranting about being "took", about I "twusted" them--etc etc etc--so maybe this thread will help--or not.

When you read a profile, how much do you believe?  I know for Me if there is a long list of expert, I'm turned off--been there done that bought that t-shirt and sent it home on the train. If the profile is blank, nope---screams to Me troller. I have the boy now, not because of what was IN his profile, but what I learned was NOT--but it also wasn't filled with blankness or Mr Macho with the silver tongue and the ever protruding dick tatooed with a list of do-me's.

So how much do you believe? What is it that makes you go, hmmmm--possibility?

I tend to read profiles more for the comedy value than anything else. I suppose I'm not easily convinced by a premediated diatribe on spirtual healing by a Mother Theresa/Florence Nightengale cyber hybrid. I mean, you can't possibly understand a character without spending significant time with that person. No amount of promising the earth and a life of harmonious co-existence should detract from that.

I don't have the answers on what leads people to be easily duped because I can't speak from experience; regardless, I'm going to pontificate on cultural matters relating to the United States, a country that I've never visited I'll add, because I can't help myself. So, here we go:

My impression of this board is that 'hope springs eternal'. I mean, you have the American Dream and all that, and then there's the high value placed on religion, which I think can lead to a climate of naievty. Then there's American films where everything turns out for the best in the end, in contrast to English films where everyone dies including the dog. Throw in that you seem to be quite an optimistic bunch, and you have a recipe for being taken in by every passing con-man in an expensive suit. Now, I know there's such a thing as rule and exception, and I know there's no substitute for experience; this is no more than an observation based on my time here.

A public declaration of admirable proportion. If it's not broken eh, and one man's idiotic behaviour is another man's naturalistic charm: every cloud has a silver lining.

I don't put a lot of stock or belief into profiles found on the internet.
If someone seems interesting I will allow my judgement to be formed, over a period of time, by witnessing consistent and sane behavior patterns.  My little voice always says:  this is the big bad interent(s), anyone can be anything, and what a fool believes.

a profile, for Me, just give me an idea of how a person can express themselves. equally, it also tells the attitude of the person. I have a series of questions I asked anyway...so, when I am approached, I look at the profile as a "guage"...

LaTigresse -> RE: Believability (2/8/2009 8:43:52 AM)

I hope for the best and expect the worst.

Either way it's no skin off my arse.

Um...Yeah, it's an American thing.

feydeplume -> RE: Believability (2/8/2009 8:48:29 AM)

I think there are a lot of people that believe what they say in their profiles. For some of them it is an exercise of cynicism and for other a revenue stream. For some it is a first attempt at self expression in a new medium (kink) and for others it is a soap box for whatever their hobby horse might be. When i read profiles, i pay attention to the words, but also the words between the words, the context of the words (age, sex, location dont laugh those do tell you something about the person) and the way the words fit together to cover over what they don't want to say but can't really hide.

But then, sometimes i just look at the pictures and make up my own stories about who they are and what they want. It's a fun game; try changing "Dom" to "rich husband" or "surrogate parent" or "in my daydream" or (my favorite) "turnip".

Any message with an e-mail address I ignore.  I hope I didn't ignore any real people but I always find that suspect.

Especially when they spell hotmail and yahoo

hutymail dat c0m  and yeahwhoo dat cum.  or hot.m.a.l dat cum

WTF??? I have never seen anyone spell either this way before joining this site.

Though certainly not scientific or a representative sampling of the entire body of those on CM, I found that those who posted on the boards tended to give me a better idea of who they really were than just the profile alone. Those with profiles that never posted tended to be more of a  "curious tire kicker" and came off guarded and timid in getting to know each other, or always waiting for, to borrow a phrase from the movie Hardbodies, "a bigger, better deal". A great profile full of confidence and detailing exactly what they were looking for turned out to be the total opposite, and not once did they ever post on the message boards.  I found prolific posters not only gave you a better glimpse of the real person, but the persona they gave off in posting tended to coincide with what was in their profile.  It was from her posts, and not her profile, that I found Deanna, and I found the Deanna who posted was the same Deanna in the profile, and the same Deanna in real life.

Perhaps a backwards process, but for those who are looking for relationships, I think a much better one than just searching and reading profiles of people who basically sit there and wait for the world to come to them. Profiles of people who often post tended to represent who they are, as opposed to what they fantasize of being.

This is not necessarily true.  Sometimes it can offer a glimpse of the person. People can also be anything they want to be on a message board.  I have had wonderful conversations with people who never post on the message board, enough conversation to convince me that they are believable.

You say that but is it true? I watched Beverly hills cop 1 through 3 and in none of them did anyone shoot or kill that annoying Eddie Murphy.

Correct me if I’m wrong.

Which is why I stated at the beginning, "Though certainly not scientific or a representative sampling of the entire body of those on CM".  Just stating what I experienced, and what I found to be common in my search process. The OP asked for impressions, and I'm simply offering mine.

Fakes, phonies and creepy guys just up and disappear. Ladies, The Domiguy Collar of Protection kills sperm immediately...No more birth control!!! ...Through it's patented technology, The Domiguy Collar of Protection allows the sub to consume what she wants without counting calories and without any fear of weight gain!!!!  Carrying around a few extra pounds or are just really gross and fat? The Protection Collar stimulates the body to naturally dispose of  body fat!!! Just watch the weight fall off!!! You will be amazed!!!  Worried about the damaging effect of the sun?The Domiguy 20th Anniversary Collar of protection gives it's wearer a natural SPF 30 protection, while allowing the sub to acquire the perfect bronze tan!!!   *Side effects were minimal.

Women why wait? For just three easy payments $19.99, The Domiguy 20th Anniversary Collar of Protection can be yours!!!!  When you see the name "Domiguy" you know it's got to be good!!!  Damn good!

*Do not wear collar in direct sunlight, do not swallow while wearing collar, collar must be kept at 78 degrees farenheit at all times, do not look directly at collar, Do not wear collar for more than three continual minutes, Never get collar wet, do not wear collar if you have acne, never wear collar around children or expectant mothers, do not think stupid thoughts while wearing collar,  at any time collar might inexplicably tighten causing immediate death.

I assume that all info given me is false until it can be shown otherwise.

Wow, this would feel like a really depressing way to go through life for me. I tend to take peoples' word on the most stuff, until I'm proven otherwise. Then again, I don't ask most of my friends for their life history, either. Perhaps it makes a difference, for me, that I'm not looking for romance, love at first sight, or an instant 'relationship'. Acquaintances and opportunities to talk over coffee is more than enough for me -- if something more comes of it, there'll be plenty of time to worry about whether the person is as skilled in tea service or sitting still for a play-piercing or cutting as xhe thinks xhe is.

I probably work too slowly for most people, but that isn't going to change, so I guess what I'm saying is that if someone seems generally decent, I'll give them my -time-, and -that- will determine what else they'll be to me other than a acquaintance. If they end up telling me an insurmountable lie down the road, well, you have to be willing to risk something in order to get anything, so I'll take a few risks every now and then.
