TheHeretic -> Homeless Henrietta: A handout, not a hand (2/14/2009 9:56:52 AM)

I guess we'll just have to wait and see if Homeless Henrietta gets the same scrutiny that Joe the Plumber did, and whether the mainstream media runs with it as hard. She may not be the ideal "face of the economic crisis." According to this article; http://www.winknews.com/news/local/39518252.html Ms. Hughes was recently offered low income housing, and turned it down, because it wasn't a no strings handout. She can't afford to pay rent because of a storage unit bill??? Watch the video. Where is she going to get $400 a month to pay rent, when her disability (whatever) check is only twice that? How about that strapping young fellow sitting next to her does a bit of day labor, or mows some lawns? (And now that they have a free place to live, will he bother to mow that one?) Now, saying this in the OP, as I've said it many times before, probably won't make a damn bit of difference, but I'm glad we have a safety net. My issue is with the people and policies that turn it into a comfy hammock that breeds laziness, contempt for a work ethic, and a multi-generational entitlement mentality. That is what Homeless Henrietta might be the face of. One hand in the public/private charity box, and the other clutching her excuses with a deathgrip. And when her Section 8 case gets expedited to the head of the line, some low income family where the head of the household works his/her ass off is going to have to wait that much longer to get their own voucher. Is Henrietta Hughes the model we want for who gets "urgent" services?
