quote:

HARTFORD, Conn. – A 200-pound pet chimpanzee once seen in TV commercials mauled a woman visiting its owner Monday and cornered a police officer in his cruiser before he shot and killed it, authorities said.
Stamford police Capt. Richard Conklin said the injured woman was hospitalized late Monday in "very serious" condition at Stamford Hospital; her identity was not immediately released. Conklin said she suffered "a tremendous loss of blood" from serious facial injuries.
The 15-year-old chimpanzee's owner and two officers also were hurt, though police said the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.
Police said they had no idea why the chimpanzee, named Travis, attacked the woman as she got out of her car to visit the animal's owner, Sandra Herold. Conklin said Herold wrestled with the animal, then ran inside to call 911.

Stories like this really irk me.  The police don't have any idea why "Travis" the chimp attacked the woman?  Are they fucking kidding?  It's a wild animal, not a little hairy person!

If you read down through the article, you see little moronic quotes like this:

quote:

He's been raised almost like a child by this family," Conklin said Monday. "He rides in a car every day, he opens doors, he's a very unique animal in that aspect. We have no indication of what provoked this behavior at all."

No indication of what provoked this behavior, huh?  Again, it's a wild animal.  It's not a "child" or a family member.

And this bit of information about the brainiac bitch that kept a wild animal in her home:

quote:

police said the Herolds told them the chimpanzee was toilet trained, dressed himself, took his own bath, ate at the table and drank wine from a stemmed glass. He also brushed his teeth using a Water Pik, logged onto the computer to look at pictures, and watched television using the remote control, police said.

Gee, why didn't they teach him to wear a little propeller beanie and ride a unicycle playing a kazoo?  I'm not an animal rights nut, but fucktards like this really piss me off.  You hear stories about this kind of thing happening all the time, but people still insist on trying to keep wild animals as pets.  The people keeping this chimpanzee and any person keeping animals like this are selfish, foolish douchebags who shouldn't even be allowed to keep a hamster.

*shivers*

I hate monkeys, seriously like a huge phobia of mine. Can't even look at them in zoo's, have to literally skip the channel if a show is on about them. I'm glad the damn dirty ape is dead.

There is the answer right there. Just wait and you
will see some study "proving" that TV causes
violent behaviour even in chimps. Or at least
someone trying to get money for the study of it.

Ugh this article made me cry when I read it. I've always felt it was wrong wrong wrong to keep something like a chimpanzee as a pet here. Especially one that gets to 200 pounds! I think it takes a certain type of ego to keep what should be a wild animal as a pet. Not sure how they could be truly surprised it eventually went off, but I bet it was truly awful to both have to have stabbed him then for the officers to shoot him.

I like to think I have a good sense of humour, but how anyone could find something even remotely amusing about this is beyond me, thankfully way beyond me.

Whilst keeping wild animals as pets in the UK is illegal, it isn't for many other counties in Europe/rest of the world and I have no comprehension of the obsession humans have with 'humanising' apes and monkeys. To wild animals, we are predators to be feared, keep them in captivity long enough and they adopt survival skills we often mistake as 'taming'. Frequently, zoo keepers find out, to their detriment, why they never lose that survival trait and will act on it the moment they sense a vulnerability.

This is a very sad story, wild animals are not the same as domesticated creatures and the owner was foolish to think that the chimps behavior would always be safe for strangers.

I agree that people shouldn't keep wild animals as "pets."
We have enough problems with domesticated dogs.
A few years ago there was another incident like this where a chimp ripped a guys nuts off in Calif. I think.
Anyone remember?

I'm sure the guy won't, even if we have. It's taken us thousands of years to domesticate certain animals, yet we still receive those reminders that survival/hunting instincts run far far deeper.

I am not upset at all by it..why??Again..we are talking an animal more at home in the jungle and not in Conneticut. What gets me more than anything is that the police department is launching a full investigation as to why the officer pulled his firearm and shot.I would be more upset however if i found out some poachers in Africa shot the chimp and used his parts on the aphrodisiac market and placebo market.

Another pathetic story about stupid people that are not satisfied with a dog, cat or goldfish.

NO ONE, should have wild animals.........or hybrids there of (wolf dog etc)........as pets.

Yeah, I just saw on the news that the woman attacked is in critical condition.  I hope there is a criminal law these people can be prosecuted under.  It's complete negligence on their part for keeping a chimpanzee like this.

If memory is correct, an adolescent chimp is stronger than an adult homo sapien. Ah, after a quick search, it turns out that the Jane Goodall Institute strongly advises against keeping chimps as pets for these very reasons.

"Chimpanzees Don't Make Good Pets"

"Chimpanzee and monkey infants are irresistibly cute, and it might seem that raising one would be just like raising a human child. As infants, chimpanzees are affectionate, needy, and a delight to interact with. But chimpanzees grow up fast, and their unique intelligence makes it difficult to keep them stimulated and satisfied in a human environment. By age five they are stronger than most human adults. They become destructive and resentful of discipline. They can, and will, bite. Chimpanzee owners have lost fingers and suffered severe facial damage."

Wild animal....yes.  But I have to wonder what triggered the chimp to do that? Wonder what kind of woman this is.  My mom always said that you can tell if a person is good natured by how your pet reacts to them.  Just food for thought.
