In our case that is a false sentiment, because our dog is very agressive to strangers  and other animals and reacts poorly to any one she doesn't know or deems a threat to her property.

Doesn't matter who you are, if you're a stranger or not welcome in her mind, yo u're gonna get the riot act barked to you.

Wild animal....yes.  But I have to wonder what triggered the chimp to do that? Wonder what kind of woman this is.  My mom always said that you can tell if a person is good natured by how your pet reacts to them.  Just food for thought.

Maybe the chimp had enough 'domestication' or maybe it was jealous of the friend. Maybe she had a rough day at work and was feeling anger or fear at that moment in time and the chimp smelled it. Wild animal response. Human response, "Hey, are you okay? Let's talk."

Why do homo sapiens act wild when they get behind the wheel of a car. Some will bash another homo sapien in the head or shoot them dead. That is the animal instinct. Hopefully we are trying to evolve to be the human beings we were intended to be and that includes not taking wild animals out of their natural habitat and expecting them to be tame.

I don't wonder what kind of person she is; I already know.  She's a moron.  The chimpanzee acted out like that, because he's a chimpanzee.  Chimpanzees are not domesticated animals.  They can't be a member of a human family, they need to be around other chimpanzees.  Otherwise, they don't learn properly.  Look at the Jane Goodall site that Vendeval linked above.  It explains completely why keeping a chimpanzee as a pet is a recipe for disaster.

The wrong animal got shot.
The woman who was attacked lost her hands and is gonna need a lot of rehab, I feel for her.
Count me as another who thinks this was an accident just waiting to happen The poor chimp was sick as it was. and while Im all for conservation and rescuing chimps, tigers, panthers, polar bears and field mice and other animals, they are not meant to be house pets.

That bit of advice is usually good with domesticated dogs but in this case my bet is that the chimp simply reacted with agression defending its territory from what it perceived as a threat.

The Jane Goodall Society should put out *adequate* warnings about chimps not those cutesey, scientific talking points.
"Do *NOT* try to keep a chimp as a pet, they will RIP YOUR FUCKING NUTS OFF when they get mad at you!"
"You want to be a Nancy Boy!?"

Vendaval -> RE: "Pet" Chimp killed after attacking owner's friend. (2/17/2009 8:37:41 PM)

You think some caution would be obvious but that is often not the case.  Some of the guys in my high school tried to convince a very naive girl to milk...a bull.  [sm=Groaner.gif]

I think this is the story you're remembering Popeye:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7957346/

It's a pretty long article.  It was two chimps that escaped their cages and attacked someone.  They ripped the guys testicles off and one of his feet!  It just shows you how powerful they are.

If memory is correct, an adolescent chimp is stronger than an adult homo sapien. Ah, after a quick search, it turns out that the Jane Goodall Institute strongly advises against keeping chimps as pets for these very reasons.

"Chimpanzees Don't Make Good Pets"

"Chimpanzee and monkey infants are irresistibly cute, and it might seem that raising one would be just like raising a human child. As infants, chimpanzees are affectionate, needy, and a delight to interact with. But chimpanzees grow up fast, and their unique intelligence makes it difficult to keep them stimulated and satisfied in a human environment. By age five they are stronger than most human adults. They become destructive and resentful of discipline. They can, and will, bite. Chimpanzee owners have lost fingers and suffered severe facial damage."

This rings a bell.  I remember seeing a TV program a while back with a female activist on it, and I think it was Jane Goodall.   They had these people on the program that raise these little chimps like babies and children.  They dress them in little outfits, take them out to the park, put them in the swings etc.  It was quite a controversial documentary with the pet owners feeling strongly that there was no danger, but the stats of injuries etc proving otherwise.

Angi, I said above that to wild animals human beings are 'creatures' to be feared, keep them long enough and they do adopt survival skills we clearly mistake as 'taming'. It has taken human beings THOUSANDS of years to domesticate certain animals, such as dogs and horses, but even in those we frequently receive reminders as to why their survival/hunting instincts run far deeper than our 'training programmes', the moment any kind of vulnerability is identified by them they instinctually react. Research the subject, I didn't pull it outta my arse. It doesn't matter how good natured you are and it's that ideology that gets people killed - frequently, when they think they can make a wild animal into a cute, cuddly pet.

and then i hear she fed him an antidepressant and tea beforehand? Then, she was asked if she would have another chimp and do it again.. and she replied she would.  I hope this woman gets some psychological treatment.

Just how strong does a being have to be to tear someone's testicles off anyway?....

i was all doped up on childrens cold and runny nose cough syrup and just about logging off the computer when the news trailer came on that nite...i was so proud to be living in CT at that moment...course, i always knew that those Stamford people were off their rockers. In the morning, i figured i had hallucinated the whole mess, but there it was on GMA....

im paraphrasing, of course...but....

kittinSol -> RE: "Pet" Chimp killed after attacking owner's friend. (2/18/2009 8:19:40 AM)

Chimpanzees are seriously intelligent animals... they share 94% of their DNA sequences with humans. This story makes me wonder whether how one of us would eventually blow a fuse if he or she were made to live amongst a gang of chimps all his or her life, and in their natural habitat, just to add insult to injury...

It's weird that it's allowed to have a chimpanzee as a pet anyway. Bonobos are way cooler (egalitarian, matriarchal, frugivorous, non-violent, sexually receptive - according to Wiki) [8|].

True, and some wind up running countries but the intellect present there is debatable hon.

Now we're likely to have a debate on egalitarian D/s, KittinSol
