Status: offline 		(nods) It would have to be something hideously traumatic for me to take something like that... on the scale of seeing another Adam Sandler or Will Farell movie, or seeing someone I love being hit by a semi truck, or something like that.

Status: offline 		In certain instances this medication might be a good idea.  But most of the time you can find that non-Rx remedies and a positive outlook on life will take you a long way.

In this application they are used for a relatively short duration.
No, they do not take the memory away... it is not an agent that causes amnesia.
It changes the way a memory is processed... which reduces the risk of PTSD.

Status: offline 		This might be easy for me to say since I don't suffer from any type of post-traumatic stress syndrome like a war veteran for example, would, but I firmly believe that thoughts cannot hurt us.  A thought is just a thought, something that occupies the mind.  When something painful enters my mind or I have an unpleasant memory or a scary thought, I just push it out and replace it with a different thought.  I might have to do it more than once or persist a bit, but it does work.

Status: offline 		It doesn't banish memories, just lessens the likelihood of panic attacks. Seems to me that with the sheer numbers of military returning with PTSD, a treatment like this, which could allow them to resume their lives would be a godsend.

However, it's early days yet to extrapolate it working after the fact from it working one day later from a one time scary experience.

I "pop" 50 mg. a day of atenolol because my heart rate soars w/o it and my blood pressure also goes way up (as compared to my historically hypotensive state, i.e. 86/40, etc.). 

I have noticed a few annoying side effects, but not enough to make me discontinue treatment. They are less troublesome than the physical effects of tachycardia and hypertension. The benefit outweighs the risk in my case, though in the future, who knows?

it seems to be just another bandaid to a problem like booze and drugs.

Sometimes people just have to face their issues and deal with them head on, the only effective cure (or at least they gain some self-worth in trying).

I had a friend (gone now) who in in a German POW camp
during WWII, for quite a long time. He got shot down
before the US got into the war.

I remember asking him about debriefing and psych counseling
for POWs. He replied, "I made my way to Norway, I got a bottle
and a couple of nurses. I knew I wasn't in a prison camp anymore."

Bless the true healers.
