Just finished If Nobody Speaks Of Remarkable Things by Jon McGregor.
Loved it and would recommend it to any one.
What are other people reading that they would recommend?

Aneirin -> RE: Books...any goods ones ? (2/17/2009 8:24:11 AM)

The telephone directory.

LOL... you made me laugh.  Thanks!  My son is brain damaged, so I got all sorts of wonderful things for him to relearn or read, just to keep his mind active.  Guess what he reads?  We can't tell if he is trying to escape... find old friends or what he is reading the telephone directory for... but that is his book of choice! lol

Gentlemen of the Road by Michael Chabon.
I didn't think he could top his Yiddish Policemen's Union but this does. Truly excellent.

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

Obviously SERIOUSLY researched, without being dry.

Slapstick by Kurt Vonnegut Jr, or anything by him for that matter
Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk
Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
Slam by Nick Hornby

I was being serious, there are times I have been known to read the telephone directory, even the yellow pages, that one has pictiures, so even better. The thing is I am aware of what services are around, because I have read about it in the directory, but it is with me, I can never remember phone numbers, but spend ages searching for something I have seen but can never remember where.

Travels with Charley - Steinbeck

Riotous Assembley - Tom Sharpe

The Throwback - Tom Sharpe

A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian - Marina Lewycka

The Green Mile - Stephen King (forget the film)

Zorba the Greek - Nikos Kazantzakis (a must-read)

The Bible - despite the fact I am an atheist

Catcher in the Rye - J.D. Salinger

The Kite Runner - Khaled Hosseini (another must)

Silly wotsit that I am, forgot to add current: A Thousand Shattered Suns by Khaled Hosseini

The books previously mentioned are ones that I keep picking up at various intervals to read excerpts/events within that captivated me in some way.

The Stand, by Stephen King

anything by David Baldacchi

DarkSteven -> RE: Books...any goods ones ? (2/17/2009 10:18:13 AM)

I'm partial to anything by James Lee Burke.  I also love PG Wodehouse (bizarre, silly, escapist confections about the foibles of the British upper class that never was).

Twisted by Jeffery Deaver,
Once you finish it, you might want to re read it again.....

domiguy -> RE: Books...any goods ones ? (2/17/2009 1:38:04 PM)

Just read,  Running with Scissors  by Augusten Burroughs.

Fun read if you like dysfunction....had it for awhile finally got around to reading it.  Some of it is laugh out loud.

stagerle -> RE: Books...any goods ones ? (2/17/2009 2:05:37 PM)

The Yiddish policeman’s union was wonderful!
I got the audio book as well which has a wee interview with the writer where he explains how the idea came about.

The Stand was good and left me with a nagging paranoia every time a flu epidemic kicks off.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Books...any goods ones ? (2/17/2009 2:11:55 PM)

Right now my reading is all tied up* and not in the sexy way* with school text books, however I am reading a book called the wealthy barber, and it's a financial planning book, only it's written in  story book format, so it's hopefully more interesting and fun to read and learn from than cut and dried boring numbers.
