I was just watching the news. I take it at face value considering it is the news in this country. Though they said Yahoo and other's have already turned all of their info over to the gov. Google is the lone survivor at the moment who has been fighting it.

No idea....what channel was it...7 I think. They said yahoo and the other's had already rolled over. So I'd assume at least the semi large ones have. Maybe google hasn't because they had more money to fight in court to protect their people?
The smaller ones...well just didn't have the money to fight?

"For instance, it’s not unusual for search requests to include names, medical profiles or Social Security information, said Pam Dixon, executive director for the World Privacy Forum.

Every other search engine served similar subpoenas by the Bush administration has complied so far, according to court documents. The cooperating search engines weren’t identified.

Dixon is hoping Google’s battle with the government reminds people to be careful how they interact with search engines.

“When you are looking at that blank search box, you should remember that what you fill can come back to haunt you unless you take precautions,” she said."

yahoo and msn were the only ones mentioned....sheesh

Supposedly they aren't giving out any personal info. The government is just using it to catch pedophiles.
Uh huh, sure. Whoever said this was a free country anymore?

I put peoples names in all of the time as a beginning to checking a person out. Before I decide to delve much further into their lives.

yahoo and msn supposedly took out identifying traces but there's no way they could take out all that data. google is a biggie, and will likely end up complying and taking a moot point to the supreme court and we all know who's sitting there now.

god bless america and that patriot act. the day liberty took its last dying breath when that went into effect. it makes an interesting read if anyone's not read it, albeit a very long one.

If you are not doing anything you are not supposed to, why would you care?

Good point! I, for one, have my picture of Der Fuhrer properly displayed and my copy of Mein Kampf on the coffee table, so I have nothing to worry about.

perhaps you've ever done a search for something on say google, and some of the results had pornographic material on them, or you perused an online catalog of bdsm with items modeled. do you know for sure those women were of age? do you know if those images are still contained in the code on your hard drive? have you any pictures of anyone saved? might they possibly be young? there are a million different possibilities.

why were any people who have been wrongly accused or incarcerated worried? go figure.

After posting the link to the article yesterday in the "News" section, I looked into this a bit more. The suit that will be brought against google initially will not seek the names or email addresses of the persons making the inquiry it will only ask for the inquiry and the results of the search. The stated intent is to determine the extent and ease of access to "child porn". The Justice Department, the name reminds me of the "Ministry of Love" in Orwell's '1984', requested a "random sampling" and claims the results will not be used to prosecute individuals but instead will be part of a government report about the pervasiveness of this problem.

By the way, those going to MSN or Yahoo shouldn't feel safe. There is a link to the original story in the News Section but this article says that MSN and Yahoo have already complied.
quote:

Google said no; Yahoo, AOL, MSN yes.
Update: Earlier today, I asked a Justice Department spokesperson which search engines other than Google received requests to provide search records. The answer: Yahoo, AOL, and MSN were also asked to supply search records information, and all complied. Google did not, and that is why the DoJ asked a federal judge on Wednesday to order the company to do so.
Another fact to consider as you sift through news coverage: Justice is not requesting this data in the course of a criminal investigation, but in order to defend its argument that the Child Online Protection Act is constitutionally sound.
See article:http://www.boingboing.net/2006/01/19/_doj_search_requests.html

Why worry? Well, if you wanted to find out if there was a child predator in a neighborhood you were considering moving with your "unmentionables" would it be reasonable to search google for convicted child sex offenders? Searching "child sex offenders" will trigger surveillance, in the same manner as if you post with the words "President, shot, killed, or bomb" in a post. Now I don't have any desire of downloading child porn, and I'm not part of an assassination plot; but there are some depictions of beth that would be considered illegal "abuse". Based upon recent blanket surveillance regarding phone taps are you confident that can't occur if the Ministry, whoops I mean Department of Justice gets their way?

Excuse me someone in a black suit, white shirt, black tie, and sunglasses just knocked on my door...

Add AOL to that list and a couple of the smaller search engines.

For evil to succeed all that is required is that good men do nothing. We should be thankful to Google for standing up to the government stormtroopers or we wouldn't even know this was going on.

BTW: I wanted to check on the above quote to make sure I worded it properly and give proper credit but for some reason the Google site is shut down (The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.)

Could this be the next move by Bush and his brownshirts?

Still down for me and has been over the last few days. Every other site works fine so it's not a DNS problem. It may be just overloaded because of the publicity.

There is an entire site dedicated to this quote attributed to Edmund Burke: http://www.tartarus.org/~martin/essays/burkequote.html

I hear ya.. and that's exactly what they said about eminent domain laws and the Patriot act.

There is a lady a few miles north of me who was threatened to be prosecuted under Patriot Act II statutes for selling a ''knock off'' Rubik's cube. They said she was hindering interstate commerce - Give me a break....!!!

Remember, section 802 is specifically aimed at US citizens and announces any crime as "domestic terrorism". Citizens can be held without a trial as "Enemy Combatants".

Any US citizen who would support the Patriot act after they've read up on the storied past of this great country, is either feeble minded or should be locked in a rubber room.

Put simply.... Enacting the Patriot Act is akin purchasing the most expensive and sophisticated burglar alarm for your house and then going to sleep at night with the doors and windows wide-open.

Boy... I can't stand Hiliary and the Democrats, but I can't wait to see the citizenry dump these lousy neocons.

The horizon looks pretty bleak on both sides of the aisle. Hilliary would be a perfect candidate as far as the Republicans are concerned. Even the TV show trying to ease in the concept of a female president isn't doing well any longer.

I'm currently following the first term senator from Illinois Barack Obama. I think I spelled it right. He sounds like a young Ronald Reagan; pragmatic, enthusiastic, and unafraid to go outside party lines. Just so happens he's a Democrat, but nobody's perfect. I think he's at least another election cycle away from being taken seriously on a national basis, but the man does say the right things as far as I'm concerned.

I'm just hoping not to have to hold my nose when I vote in 2008 as I did in 2004.

Hmm. Well, I guess it has been said that he who values security over freedom deserves neither. However that said, My searches are of such that I really do not care if the government has access to them or not. I guess I can understand how others could be viewed differently, regardless of intent.

Slim pickings, huh? Yeah... at least Obama doesn't seem like a phony or a liar. And hey... he's not a blue-blood or pseudo-aristocrat! The problem I see with him tho... he's still intertwined with the whole redistribution of wealth/socialistic mechanism /mentality that is bent on punishing people for fruits born of their hard work/effort. Consequently... a whole lota dilligent smart/hard workers end up in a fifty percent tax bracket. *Wink*

I still think we need a fiscal Pat Buchanan, but with a social mentality of an Al Sharpton.

I heard a better version of that adage last night ''Those who value security over freedom deserve tyranny'' How true.
