I have to admit it, I'm more cynical since I started my journey into kink.  I really don't care if I meet someone now, I really don't.  I meet plenty of vanilla gals to keep my palate wet.  I don't actively seek women out here.  I've done that, and the results are typically boring.  I find amusement in reading the boards, but I'm always looking for that one person.  I find amsement in the stories abourt scene life.   I'm sorry people, but I will laugh in your face if you introduce yourself as Master Thunderbird.

contradict yourself much?

Actually...with me, i am much less cynical. If there is one thing that "the lifestyle" has brought home to me, it is acceptance of others, without criticism and/or judgement.

Actually, I have always been cynical of people as a whole--however, when I come here, I really try to see the other person's view, preference, situation and you know what? I am still imperfectly human because I see the same lack of common sense with people here as I do out there--but in here, there is more variety of it.

What I haven't mastered yet is the difference between being cynical and judging--I am accepting of people's preferences, their proclivities, its the..hmmm, the inability to manage them, when they use those as a means of excusing behavior, of continuing to make bad life decisions or to escape life's responsibilities--that's when I get My dander up. I have come and gone from here a few times and yet I came back-this is an outlet for Me--yeah some of the people here are nut cases ( I am sure they feel the same about Me)--but there are more that I respect, admire, learn from and just make Me smile--its a stress release when My life feels a tad out of control with people more like Me than the people "out there".

I'm less cynical.   For me, trusting myself more as i've aged, has lead me to a more comfortable place, where I know what I like, and I don't tend to deal with a lot of negativity.
To me, being overly cynical, makes people unable to fully embrace people or experiences they aren't familiar with.   It is limiting.     M

I know what you mean. I've very cynical, I'm not really looking either. But that doesn't stop me from keeping my eyes open just in case that one is out there. I describe it as that tiny speck of hope that punches through my absolute disbelief.

I think I've always been cynical of human beings, probably has everything to do with my past.

I never believe anything I read on this online communities beyond the most surface level because I figure all of us could be liars. That doesn't honestly matter because the odds are I will never meet 99.9% of the people here and beyond buying a book or two of mine, I will likely never interact with folks outside the forums.

People at I meet in meatlife I'm a touch less cynical about but not much. It takes a while for me to feel like I can trust anyone or get to know anyone.

I wouldn't say I was cynical, but do retain a healthy amount of 'reservation' when talking with others or reading profiles. I wouldn't say I was more reserved here than in general but also recognise bullshit for what it is and as with my life personally I refuse to invite it into my life. I extend openness and honesty to people and hope it's respected and returned in kind, usually it is and if not, it's not extended a second time.

What I do see frequently though is a great lack of common sense among people and a general willingness to take risks they wouldn't normarily do. Is it a common view that b/c we are part of this bdsm community that it somehow makes us more honest, forthright individuals just b/c we share a side of ourselves with each other we often keep hidden from the rest of the world? People need to understand that despite being a Miss Morrigan, Slaveboyforyou or whomever, we aren't just screen personas, we are individuals and our candor (or lack thereof) will spill forth in our posts/messages we share with others.

I am far more cynical, and have to work hard not to lapse into bitterness.

I think there's a point after cynicism where a lot of things become funny in a cynical sort of way.  Then after that, you're not even cynical anymore.  Later still, you notice that even something as juvenile as somebody farting becomes funny all over again.  Maybe that's what they call second childhood.  If so: roll it on, I say.

For what it's worth - I don't think you've got it in you to be full-blown bitter, Lady Hib.  You've got too many bubbles in you.

I've been cynical of people since I was a child, even though I keep hoping people will change it.

That doesn't mean I see only the negative qualities in people. I just see them as they are, the whole picture. The good, bad and the ugly. I know what to expect from them when things are good, and I know what to expect of them when they are pushed into a corner.

I am actually a very positive person. I am simply a realist.

They're poisoned bubbles, love...  I have been full blown bitter, and only the memory of what that was like keeps me working to stay out of it.

Lady Hibiscus, I really don't want to come across as being critical of you, but if there is a clear pattern of running into 'loons' and 'assholes' then there is only one common denominator. I've been there myself, i went through a period where the submissives I invited into a relationship with me were far from forthcoming. Admittedly, I blamed them, moved on, found yet another submissive that treated me with less than respect. It took someone who respected me enough to tell me a few home truths and I threw the mother of all temper tantrums at hearing things I didn't like. it was only after a great deal of reflection and time away from any kind of D/s / S & M that I realised I had been making extremely poor choices out of loneliness. I didn't want to continue that path and changed it, but it needed me to be brutally honest with myself before I could begin a process of learning to make healthier choices and stop using sites such as CM to bolster my ego.

While I understand why it is people want to focus on the good in people, I can't when it's to our personal detriment.

You mean, there's a point where that's supposed to stop? My little brother, the man I'm dating, my father, and my grandfather still giggle like second graders at fart jokes....

Now that has me laughing!  So if someone said to you, "If we are what we eat, I could be you tomorrow", you'd know it wasn't a case of benign hero worship, eh?

I'm not sure what "cynical" means; but, I have been angrier that a smokejumper after ten days of coyote tactics...  on Thursday... with out a hot meal... or a sleeping bag....  I'm not quite sure what I'm angry at (or who).  I am, however, doing my best not to spread the funk.

I know what you mean.  I try not to be, but get burned so many times you can't help it sometimes.  But it really has nothing to do with lifestyle, it's that way outside the lifestyle as well.

But yes, as far as the net, I am a bit worse, to the point of probably being full blown jaded.  I just try to hold it in check and continue on.
