I never argued with any of my girlfriends or my ex-wife in public...why would I think it would be O.K. to step it up and publicly discipline my submissive/slave/property in public?

It bothers me to see people argue in public. It is an exposure of a relationship's more vulnerable areas and like it or not, exposure of vulnerability to the general public will always result in discomfort on the general public's part and...on someone's part...the desire to "do something" to "help" one or both partners.

Show strength to the public...who has no idea of who and what you are...and your vulnerabilities to each other and/or to those who DO know you and whom you've entrusted to help you.

Yes, there are D/s things I will do in public but they are not so overt that "vanilla" couples are going to pick up on them other than thinking that I am "retro" or "traditional" or even a chauvinistic old bastard. Others into D/s would probably recognize the behavior right away. That is the way I am comfortable.

BDSM skirts the line of the law all the time. Much of what we do can be considered assault and much more. It is illegal. Assault does not have to have the consent of the injured to press charges. You do not have the right to beat someone or be beaten. So, a business is perfectly within its rights to refuse to accommodate. That is life and I don't see it changing.

When we engage in this lifestyle, we do so at our own risk. If something goes wrong, there will most likely be a price to pay. I don't see the right to engage in BDSM ever making it into the Civil Rights laws.

In my day, I played at events and pushed the envelope. I regret some of what I have done. So, for me (notice I am not judging others!) I want it to be part of an intimate relationship, where we can fulfill each others needs. I don't need the approval or condemnation of the world.

I don't argue in private let alone public: I'm not prepared to reduce myself to shouting and ranting when disagreements can quite easily be resolved through reason.

There's no discomfort on my part - more a case of being an inquistive visitor at the zoo watching the animals scream, bark and scratch their arses for the world to see. I'd remain philosophically baffled by the whole affair and would be laughing at some stage. Help them? I think it would be beyond a mere human being; divine intervention would be necessary.

But, in the case of a naked woman lying on the floor in a supermarket/shop, I may, on the spur of the moment, put a price tag 'round her wrist, carry her to the pay till, buy her and take her home to be used as a human rug.

The lass behind the counter would be fine: cabbage, milk, humans, eggs are all the same to her.

Possession is nine tenths of the law, so he'd just have to grin and bear it, though I could sell her to him for a tidy profit.

the thing is i reckon, on the whole we are pretty open minded folk by definition - we accept other people for who and what they are - so when somethng like this comes along it challenges the 'live and let live' attitudes that we embrace.

i think here its all about the other people, as people have said, theyre uncomfortable having to witness another persons humiliation and discomfort. since this would be a punishment the slave concerned is unlikely to be smiling happily and humming a tune, the whole discomfort thing gets magnified all round.

Seems i recall a thread about a dom disciplining his sub/slave at a play party - and the overwhelming consesus was that it was VERY inappropriate of the dom to force his negative interaction on everyone else - who were there to enjoy themselves and not experience negative energy. Now, translate that to a public place with people who don't understand the dynamic, and may have never heard of it.

As far as educating the public about what we do? i can think of better lessons than the negative side of our lives. Perhaps the dom needs to look to himself and how he disciplines his sub/slave, if the only thing he can think of to correct behaviour is to involve people who will not be understanding of the dynamic in play. Maybe leaving him/her at home would be a better way of discipling them. Sheesh - get an idea!!!!

I agree with the idea of having her show her submission to him in public, but NOT in a way that is obvious to outsiders. Some ways are entirely private, such as her wearing clamps or a plug under her clothes. Some are semiprivate, such as her doing something that is visible to all but not understood - a piece of jewelry that could be understood between them but nobody else.
