Just out of curiosity, what is the nature of the deity in whom you believe (if you believe in one or a group)?  i ask because i have a very hard time believing in an omniscient, omnipotent, and benevolent deity.  i have trouble believing in an entity of that sort that bestows free-will upon it's people too.  This question has always been a problem for me, probably due to some roughness in my own background.  i personally believe in a goddess who is more volatile, less forgiving, and most definitely not always right, even though she is watchful and can be very caring of her followers.  Beyond this, i think that the path we follow is fated, even when the method by which we follow that path isn't.

Just as a point of information, i have no problem with atheists either, although that choice also doesn't work for me.  You are welcome to respond why you don't believe in a deity if you feel you would like to share.

i don't know how to do the whole poll thing so it'll have to be regular written answers if you choose to participate.  Sorry.

Interesting question, Soft.  My beliefs have evolved over the years & I'm not sure how to explain who/what I believe in.  I choose to call this entity "god", since that's a term with which I am most familiar.  This god watches out for me & gets my attention when I am erring, when I am not following the correct path.  I'm fairly stubborn--ok, really really stubborn--so I don't always pay attention to the first whispers.  In fact, one time this god had to run me over with an Oldsmobile to get my attention.  LOL

I have found that if I can sit quietly & listen, I will hear the answers.  Doing what I am told to do isn't always easy, however.  I believe that there are certain things that we each must learn & experience in each incarnation in order to move on to the next.  This time, I believe that I had to cram a whole lot of experiences & lessons into this short time I have & I've done my best.  I've had an incredible & blessed life despite, or sometimes because of bad things happening.

I have wanted to die ever since I can remember, but for some reason I keep living & fighting & learning & experiencing.  I have this incredible curiosity & am always wondering what will happen next, what twists & turns my path will take, so I keep living so that I can find out.  There have been times that I felt that this god threatened my life & other times when he/she/it has saved my life & it has all been with a larger purpose.

There's a lot more to my belief system than what I have put down here.  If it doesn't make sense, I blame it on this silly head cold & Dayquil.

I am nominally Jewish but have no religious faith.  I've never seen any evidence of the existence of a god, however comforting I might find a belief in such.  I respect other people's right to believe as they do, but it's not for me, although I find religion in general fascinating.  What do I believe in?  Love, science, and the Constitution of the United States.

I think it's fairly obvious that cruelty is as much a part of human behaviour as mutual co-operation. But, from a theological perspective, this doesn't prove the non-existence of a benevolent god. The reason being that you'd have to compare this world with the alternative - no cruelty, no weakness, no suspect decisions could only derive from a lack of choice. Perhaps god is being benevolent by affording us the scope to get it right or wrong - I mean, imagine living in a world without the opportunity to make decisions for ourselves.

Having said that, I do not believe in the existence of a god. It's nothing to do with a philosophical view of god and benevolence; it's a matter of believing in that which I can see and I'm not a fan of big ideas.

My view of the old Gods/Goddess is that they are all sitting around playing the game of Human Survival rolling dice and knocking things over on a whim.  They are smoking great weed and drinking great booze and telling jokes and fucking with us just because they can. Once in a while one or the other of them takes pity on us poor fools and adds some bonus survival points or helps us roll a saving throw.

Soft,

An interesting one to say the least.
I believe in something.  Quite what, I doubt I shall ever find the true answer to.  Is there life after death?  I believe so.  Does Karma exist?  Certain experiences in my life have dictated that I should sway towards the affirmative.  Do I believe in a God with a long white beard who gave his son so we could live, a heaven with harp playing angels and an afterlife where only positive experiences occur?  Hell no!

Do I believe we are the most evolved intelligent beings in each form of existence (spiritually or corporally)?  I'd be a bit of an arrogant prick if I did.

Whatever it is that's out there it's more intelligent than I am and it's going to be around long after I'm gone.

I believe in a higher power.  I call "it" God.  Sometimes, some things happen that have no logical explanation, and like someone else mentioned, it's at that time that higher power is just screwing around with our lives.  And God has one hellaciously warped sense of humor.

I am a former witch priestess, and believe that there are lots of non-human entitites around in the universe, and we can deal with some of them.  I tend toward the Seven African Powers if I want specific help, and and image of Lord Ganesh is on my desk at work.  (he DOES both open and close doors... you take what you get, eh!)

I do not believe that there is some kind of almighty something or other taking a personal interest in me.  Certainly not the creator of the universes, if there is such a thing.  Shoot, that would be like us taking an interest in the empty space between our atoms!    There might be something messing with us...  remember shaking up ant colonies to watch them scatter?  Like that.

Obviously I am not a faith-based person.  I am not sure if I envy my friends that are, or not.  I certainly respect their views and am glad that they have them!

i'm not sure it matters if i believe in God - if God is...God is.
What i believe does not change God.

i find a lot of sensible guidance in my chosen religious practices.
i look at religion differently as a 63 yr old woman than i did at 12 yrs old.

Thank you all for responding.  ~nods~  Any god or goddess in whom i could believe would indeed have to have a very odd sense of humor.  i was simply curious about how people saw the base personalities of their chosen deity.  i find it interesting that there are others who don't believe that this entity focuses all of it's energy on us all of the time, and it was equally interesting how people expressed their ideas.

I'm not a great believer in religion or god but you raise an interesting question about freewill. I.e. God supposedly gives it and expects it's creation to use it a certain way (not commit sin), this could imply the god is looking for the creation to find the answers for it. To say certain things are a sin gives some basic guidance but as humans we can deviate slightly from this list of initial sins to find more important sins. Either god wants reassurance from its creation that initial list of sins was right or it doesn't know at all what the list of sins should be.

Why create something that can act the way you don't like? Maybe the god has created the facility for random behaviour so that it can find something special from the randomness, shame then that religion has turned people into automatons.

I am more of a believer in a universal consciousness, including me and thus by definition being greater than me.  I don't necessarily believe that we are bound to a fate, but I often look back at choices and believe that the choice I made was the one I was going to make.  Being a part of the universe allows me to be part of making the world in a sense.  I would struggle with being worshiped for that though, I assure you.

yours
