Kalista07 -> wii fit or no wii fit? (2/21/2009 6:39:57 PM)

When i had my car accident we decided not to replace it.... Lack of finances was and remains an issue for me. At that time, due to the results of the accident i opted to cancel my gym membership. i've been wanting to go back for a while but two things keep me from being able to do that the primary factor is transportation and the secondary issue is the money.

Recently, however i talked to some friends who have wii fit. They love it!! i thought this might be a great way to increase the ability to get in some natural exercise. He says He's in favor of it if i think it will help. However, He read a negative report online about the way the machine tells people that are overweight that they are obese...My response to him was that nothing a machine says to me can hold a candle compared to what my head says... The other complaint He read was that there are too many breaks between the activities to get Your heart rate going.
Anyone have any thoughts?? Exprience??

Kali

Everything about the wii that I have seen is overrated.  I am not a fan of it in any way.

Damn....Any particular reasons why?

Thanks,

Opinions diverge on this. Some argue that the Wii fit is a gateway form of exercise, but that it seldom sustains the months of interest that are necessary to make a change in people's fitness levels. Lots of articles out there... here are a couple.

Its all about selling product.  Nothing more.

The vaunted "life like" motions are nothing like the real things they are supposed to emulate.  The bowling can actually cause damage to your r/l game because the motions are wrong.  The sword fighting causes problems that I have had to fight in numerous idiots because they think they know how swords work.

I would recommend finding a good workout partner and hitting a gym if you want exercise.  Thats what I started doing and I'm having more fun than I evercould ona wii.

kittinSol -> RE: wii fit or no wii fit? (2/21/2009 7:07:13 PM)

I love Wii tennis though. My problem is that I gesticulate so much when I play it I get dangerous to be around (an unsusual thing *wink wink*), especially to myself. I actually impaled my finger on a nail that was hanging from the fireplace today when I was doing particularly well against the bot (I'm a 'pro' at level 1940 on Wii tennis) [&:] .

LaTigresse -> RE: wii fit or no wii fit? (2/21/2009 7:13:36 PM)

I love the Wii. I have no intention of taking up tennis, bowling, or race car/go cart driving (again) so I am not worried that it will "ruin my game".

It's a fun family activity that gets butts up off the sofa. All good things.

lighthearted -> RE: wii fit or no wii fit? (2/21/2009 7:20:16 PM)

ok, I'm going to disagree with the negative opinions.  I love my Wii Fit.
first, the game doesn't call you obese.  you input your height, the balance board weighs you and gives you your BMI.  mind you, it doesn't take into account different types of body frames, but if you're obese according to BMI charts, then it's going to say...obese.

now, you only have to go through that once, if you want.  if you can survive the trauma, you can go on to enjoy what else it has to offer.  having been an avid gym gal/exerciser for the majority of my adult life, I really let it slide in the past few years.  back problems didn't help and finances also forced me to give up my gym membership.  after the UMs got the Wii for Xmas, I decided to get myself the Fit to help inspire me to get back to exercising.

I realize that at some point I will become bored with the exercises it has to offer, even tho they don't unlock them all at once.  but by the time I get to that point, I will probably have reaped many benefits.  I love that I can do squats, lunges and other exercises and focus on maintaining proper form through the use of the indicator on the screen.  I'm going to try and use the running in place function with a mini trampoline to reduce any joint stress.  I also love that you can switch between activities at the drop of a hat, since I have a very short attention span.

so, that's my $.02...if you really are unsure, maybe a friend has one you can try?  I bought mine kinda flying blind, but it so far, so good.

Not to nit pick, but the OP was asking about the Wii Fit, which has exercises in 4 categories - aerobics, strength, balance and yoga.  It demonstrates how to do the exercise properly and the trainer will comment on how you are doing because unsteadiness and bad form are picked up by the balance platform you stand on to use it.  i find it useful, especially since i can work up to longer and more advanced sessions.  There's lots of positive feedback and rewards, too, which are always nice.  Plus, some very accurate record keeping and graphs for Master.  Too accurate.  ~wink~

Edited to note that the tennis, bowling, racing, etc. are on the Wii Sports, not Wii Fit.

they don't have to be mutually exclusive, the Wii Fit and going outdoors.  [:)]

DomMeinCT -> RE: wii fit or no wii fit? (2/21/2009 7:31:54 PM)

I like it, particularly the yoga and the balancing exercises. I find it motivating and it is encouraging to unlock new games and poses as you progress. It does base its rating on BMI (which  does use "obese" on its scale), but you can skip quickly through any part you think is too preachy.

My opinion is that it's best combined with other activities, such as a brisk walk with the dogs.  It has been a lifesaver though during a cold, snowy winter (and when it's too hot to be outside).

For less than you would spend on the Wii, you can get a home multi-station weight machine that will be far more effective for workouts.

I love wii sports. I want to get the wii fit because the balance board is used for snowboarding and skateboarding games. fun!

PanthersMom -> RE: wii fit or no wii fit? (2/22/2009 12:27:46 AM)

the folks at the nursing home i was in last summer loved the wii and all the games.  a friend of mine has been using her wii fit to supplement her normal exercise routine, break up the monotony a little.  i don't like video games myself, but some folks find the wii is a welcome change from the other game systems, it actually gets butts up and moving.

it's cool. my master requires i stay in shape so i haven't used it to lose weight because i didn't need to, but it is very fun to exercise with. I think it is kinda limited, i wish there were more exercises and games. i think it is more meant to be a gateway/health tracker, though i think u can get a good work out just with it.

the weight thing is just because it uses BMI, which is stupid on their part, but if you know going in about it, it is no big deal i think.

you can adjust the number of reps and time doing it so to get more of a work out

have u heard they are coming out with Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics and punch out wii? they should be cool

Hello Kalista, hope this day finds you well!
Couple of points.  I have the Wii fit.  Yes the machine does tell you if you are 'obese'.  Italso changes the shape of your wii-me, which isn't always flattering - so just be prepared.  It also calculates your 'wii fit age' based on your balance, weight etc... and that can be above or under your actual age.  If a person has self esteem issues I would not recommend it.  If a person suffers from obsessive addictions, I wouldn't recommend it.

However, if you can take the game as a game and use it as an exercise tool, go for it.  I would not recommend you use it as a weight loss programme but a fun activity in the same way as wii sports can be fun on the tennis or boxing.  I would use it in combination with those and regular walking.  The walk doesn't have to be intense or far, even if it is just too local shops to begin with.

It's a great tool to help with posture and balance.  The yoga session is a good tool on it to use alone.  I always use the lighter yoga training before participating in the other sessions to help stretch.

If you have someone you can do it with, that helps because it is a team thing.  You have friends that you say use it, so you can ask on of them.  Or you can write me on the otherside if you want.

Aneirin -> RE: wii fit or no wii fit? (2/22/2009 4:53:51 AM)

I will second what the dark said, the Wii, is very impressive, much more so than I originally thought. As I have tried the exercise programs and they are addictive, but one item of interest for me, was the yoga function. I do Iyengar yoga, but in normal practice, I am not aware of my balance situation, the amount of auto correcting I do to stay balanced, the Wii notices this and tells you, a revelation to me, though I am doing the poses correctly, I am not balanced, good information.

It was either that, or I was not fully sorted out on coffee yet.

SilverMark -> RE: wii fit or no wii fit? (2/22/2009 5:02:04 AM)

If wii fit makes exercise a part of your life....go for it....
I am a bit of a gym freak myself but, I believe that anything you do is better than anything you don't do.
At our gym they have a room called XArcade which is a series of wii like stations that do the same things on a much larger scale, if they didn't think it would work it wouldn't be there. Getting your heart rate up, sweating and movement are all great things but, follow the directions so, you don't injure yourself.
Have Fun kalista!
