Escargots are surprisingly very tender and soft, almost melt-in-your-mouth, even though they look like something you took out of a defective sink fixture.

They have kind of a mild and sweet taste, and are wonderful served drowning in melted, garlicky butter. Try them, you'll love them! (If they do have a spiky tongue, it cooks out very nicely!)

in the military, we just don't ask what we it is we're eating. if the locals are eating it, you can too.
i know that Master has ate kogogi and rat.
some people find that alligator is like chicken,,, not if it's done right, it taste so much better.
but i think the weirdest thing we ever ate was Korean ice cream pops with corn in them

but ohhh the melon-pops there... so good! and aloe water, yummy!

i'm bookmarking this thread to re-read every time i get the urge to splurge and have something i'm not supposed to. cures any notion of eating anything for quite awhile.

Cactus I eat fairly routinely - it's a staple in a lot of mexican dishes that can be found in Oklahoma and Texas
Collard, Turnip, and Mustard Greens (sauted until limp in lard with just a bit of salt & pepper - served with a bigass bowl of pinto beans, fresh cornbread still hot from the oven, and a plate of freshly sliced tomatos, onions, and cucumbers)

Thank you for answering me, Windchymes. I had built up this perception that they'd be tough and rather 'chewy', the exact opposite to how you've described them. So that decides it, I WILL try them in the near future and I'm always reminded of the scene in 'Pretty Woman' whenever someone mentions them lol

I've traveled to 30 countries and always ate what my hosts provided. Among ones not already mentioned are:

chicken feet
pig's ear
horse
raw hamburger meatballs treated with lemon juice (I don't recommend it - I got food poisoning)
fish heads
water snake
alligator
dorine (a fruit that raises your temperature and blood pressure and so is somethings used as an aphrodisiac)

When in the Orient I just got used to asking whether something was plant or animal because you often couldn't even tell that.

as for things like Blood Puddings and what nots..those are just regionals and I consider them normal. Must add however, more unexpected and unwelcome spiders and flies than I can to think about since I sleep with my mouth open.
