This thread is a good example. The liberals have nothing to say bout Obama's "plans" to slash the deficit in half in what, five years! Ok....fair question.....let me tell you what I have to say about it: When Obama first announced his run for president, I figured he had about as much chance as Shirley Chisolm. He was young, he was relatively unknown except for a great speech at the 04 convention, he was black, he was liberal...in short, with the Hilary Clinton juggarnaut against him, I figured him to be out of the race damned quick. At best, I figured he was setting himself up for name recognition in 12 or 16. Then I saw a man who ran a nearly flawless political campaign. He not only managed to get past the smears and dirty tricks thrown up in any political campaign (an no, this is not a democrat or republican thing, presidential campaigns get down and dirty on both sides)....he managed to pick people who had good, workable ideas and he listened to them when it was appropriate to listen to them. When he made a mistake (for example, that line about PA folk holding on to god and guns as a sop for their miserable lives) he managed to get away from it without being overwhelmed. This man went from unknown to president and, despite what the republicans like to claim, he didn't do it by being the world's greatest liar or most charming sob ever to run for office. Since he's been in office, he's managed to begin changing the way we deal with our foriegn detainees (as he promised to do)....begin to change our military strategy to shore up our Afghanastan campaign while winding down our Iriqui campaingn (again, agree or not with the policy, as he promised to do)...pass an incredibly large and complex piece of financial legislation (still, whether you agree with it or not, still an impressive accomplishment in and of itself).....and STILL have over 60% of the people in this country thinking he's doing a good job. Sooooo...when he says that in five years he can cut the deficit in half, and points out that winding down Iraq puts us 90 billion dollars per year closer to that goal, hell yes, I'm not going to say "nope...aint gonna happen." He's been managing to get done a whole lot of what he said he'd get done so far.
