I've waited tables.  One night, an asshole with 8 people in his party ran up a $300 tab.  The fucker left me a dollar in change.  I followed him out into the parking lot, and I gave him his dollar back.  I walked back in and quit.  You have no idea how much working in the service industry sucks until you do it.  I ALWAYS tip 20% to my waitress, bartender, and barber.  The kid that bags my groceries always gets a few bucks for his trouble.  Take out places, I always try to toss a few bucks in the jar.  The pizza guy always gets at least 20%.

My mother also worked in the business ... there is nothing like X waiters or waitresses. One night when I was a boy and out with the family my mother became upset with the service. When the bill came she left a tip of 2 cents.

Just like with you the waitress came to our table before we left and said…” Here’s your 2 cents back… My mother smiling said you’re right you weren’t worth the 2 cents.

Funny what sticks with you as you get older… maybe that’s why I’m so cheap...It’s my Moms fault.

Here is the Rule of Thumb that I use in tipping

  • If you are pleased and tipping is not customary or expected $1 to $2
  • If you are pleased and there is a tip jar $1 per person that helped you in some way
  • If you are pleased and it is a buffet and your drinks stayed filled $2 - $5
  • If you are pleased and it was a standard restraunt meal over $25 but under $30 $5 - $7 or More
  • If you are pleased and it was a standard restraunt meal over $30 but under $50 $7 - $10 or More
  • If you are pleased and it was a standard restraunt meal over $50 but under $100 $10 - $20 or more
  • If you are pleased and it was a standard restraunt meal over $100 but under $150 $15 - $30 or more
  • If you are pleased and it was a standard restraunt meal over $150 and there was more than 6 people in your party you should tip $5 per person in your party (Including Children...Especially if there are children)

You will notice that these tips do not always reflect a 20% and that is because although 20% is customary or ettiquite wise the tips above will usually make the server feel appreciated if you go below those amounts you are usually seen as cheap or inconsiderate.

I have been known to tip more than my meal was worth to someone who antisipated my needs, I don't get angry with servers because most of the time they are helpless to what has upset you. If it takes them forever to get to you it may be because they are working to areas and are overwhelmed, maybe the cooks are being dicks or decided to smoke a bowl in the walk in. I judge every server by my Soda. If I see the bottom of my glass for longer than it takes me to get thirsty again then they will get a poor tip. Busy or Not drinks are a quick and easy way to please a customer. If they make excuses for why things are slow that are just excuses then that will piss me off, give me a reason not an excuse.

And Finally, No matter what when someone goes out of the way for me or any member of my family I make sure to let them know I appreciate it. I once left my server a dollar and tipped the Bus Person and the Kitchen Staff $10 dollars each ($50 in all) because when the server was no where to be seen they too care of my table and well that wasn't there job.

I am also the dick who talks to the Manager of a Restraunt if I am very pleased or the slightest bit annoyed and I know for a FACT I have been responsible for many people getting let go over the years. Not Proud but on the same note not something I want to put up with ever again either.

That was more than a rule of thumb. That was encyclopaedic.

Ditto. Typically I'll refuse compensation (unless they're trying to make me pay for their mistake or problem), because, really, if it was bad enough for me to complain the likelihood of me returning (or wanting to owe them at all) is null.

Of course, once I got told by the manager that I was trying to get the waitress fired because I was racist when I was complaining about the fact that my food was completely uncooked, and then after they brought back a second serving, completely not what I ordered (when they could have just taken what wasn't cooked and, y'know, thrown it back on the grill). She followed me out of the restaurant and apologized for him and I gave her a fiver and told her it wasn't her fault. I called the corporate and they refunded me the entire meal (since, y'know, the only thing I consumed was copious amounts of diet soda because the waitress kept it full). They also told me it wasn't the only complaint they'd recieved about that location.

Hrm, I'm in anecdote mode. This is bad.

I don't know how you managed that.  I had to share my tips with the busser and bartender (and vice versa).  I worked at 3 different restaurants, and that was the standard procedure.  I even had to share with the bussers on busy nights when I bussed my own tables.

Okay, I'll give a you a tip about the service industry.  It's easy to get another job.  The night I quit, I walked across the street to another joint for a beer.  I told the bartender what happened.  I got another job that night.  I've worked at a Lowe's when I was 19.  I got "I'm going to talk to the manager" threats all the time.  LOL.  This was 1994, and they only paid me $5.00/hour.  I dared them to fucking fire me.  I could walk next door to K-mart and be hired right then and there for the same money.

Vendaval -> RE: tipping (2/26/2009 7:36:56 PM)

This is the reason that mandatory gratuities are included for larger groups at many restaurants.  And one waitress I worked with told an asshole who pulled this same stunt that they could just keep the damn $3.00.

Roselaure -> RE: tipping (2/26/2009 8:16:49 PM)

I usually tip 18-20%, occasionally more if the service is truly exceptional.  If it's bad I tip nothing and talk to the manager.  I never leave a dollar.  If I'm that mad I don't want anyone to think I am just cheap.

Sir Daddy -> RE: tipping (2/26/2009 8:28:01 PM)

People who have worked in a capacity in which tips made up a large portion of their income tend to tip better than those who have never held such positions.  I've been a bartender.  I tip well for adequate service, excessively for outstanding service...and insultingly for crappy service.  I always drop a few in the jar on a to-go order.  =)

FR:

One of my coolest moments in the service industry:

When I worked at Lowe's, a Mexican came in with a slip of paper listing the sheetrock his contracter wanted.  He barely spoke English.  The slip of paper he handed me made no sense to me at all.  I took him to our desk that dealt with contractors, and gave them his slip of paper.  He found me outside after that and gave me 15 bucks.  I tried to tell him that I couldn't accept it (we weren't allowed to take tips.), but he insisted.  He was smiling the entire time, and thanking me in broken English.  I reluctantly took the money.  I was proud as punch that day.  I'll never forget that kindness. That was 15 years ago, and I remember the lesson it taught me.  You can really do a great deal of good with just a simple act of kindness.

"Claim Jumper" sounds like a Western style steak house.  Is that a good description?

Hi Vendeval.  Claim Jumper is a medium to upscale family restaurant, serving American comfort food - steak, chicken, fish, meat loaf, pot pies, salads, liver...you name it.  The food is fantastic, so are the desserts.  Service is always very good.  Full bar with a nice variety of wines, wonderful cocktails, and delicious appetizers.

Oh my!  So don't eat all day before you have dinner there.  Got it.

Back when I was in college I was waiting tables at a white table cloth here and one night I get a big table, 8 or 9 people, celebrating some sort of business deal. They run up a huge tab, the bar tab was easily $1000. The guy who paid wrote a clear 0 in ths space for a tip. I was grumbling when I went to run the card and the owner heard me and looked over the tab and went out and informed the entire party that their entire company, we were in the same building as their firm, was no longer welcome. He paid me and the bartender 25% out of his own pocket. The next week the menus stated that parties of 6 or larger had an automatic 20% tip.

Vendaval -> RE: tipping (2/26/2009 9:44:35 PM)

Wow.  That was an amazing amount of courage from the restaurant owner.  Good for him.

He's had a single restaurant in the city for a long time. He wants a professional front of the house and that's not possible if people can't make an actual living at his restaurant. He went smoke free years before it was required and always said it helped his business that his food never smelled like tobacco. A really great guy to work for.

Vendaval -> RE: tipping (2/26/2009 10:10:06 PM)

I like him even better, making the place smoke-free.

Thats why Hubby tips our barristas 25-30%.[sm=coffee.gif]

As for Claim Jumper--We ate there last week--I highly recommend the stuffed sweet potato--yummy and healthy.

Question--For free valet parking do you tip both when you leave the car and when you pick it up? How much for casino valet parking?

Not to hijack but, that's where many of us will differ. They get kudos from the non-smokers and the smokers will likely take their business elsewhere. But I do agree that it should be the restaurant owners choice, not something that is mandated by law.

I did that. No choice. People WILL stiff servers if they think they can get away with it, all the while trying to justify it with their buds because the serrver didn't run fast enough when the pricks at the table were running them back and forth for another knife, or a glass of wine (no, that's fine, but ya think the assholes could order at the same time?), or another napkin. There are some amazingly shitty people who have really fucked-up lives who seem to live to take it out on servers. I guess because they are so powerless in their own lives (yanno, like most "doms")(look how powerful I am! I can browbeat a server and leave a twopence tip! Shitbags)(If I say what I think about people who leave two pennies, or shit like that, I'll get banned)
I've seen it all. A shitbag broke a salsa bottle and planted a piece of glass in his beans. Fuck didn't know we didn't use that salsa in the kitchen. People trying to change their fucking babies' shitty diapers ON THE TABLE next to someone who is eating. The eight-top that tries to tip nothing. Drunk lesbians screaming, throwing beer bottles, all so they could walk on the bill. People wanting to bring whole fucking meals in for a birthday celebration. Lighting up joints at the table.
My short tenure as a restaurant owner taught me one thing. 80% of humanity is shit.
