ORIGINAL: SpinnerofTales So....I can't help but wonder.....did Obama put this little prize into his budget so that the Republicans could have something to take up arms against, something to focus upon and finally remove in order to allow them the claim of victory? Do you think that he's going to fight for that provision or let it die a well deserved death as a sacrifice to the gods of bi-partisanship? Did he, knowing that all the Republican party has going for it now is standing up and yelling "NO!", give them something to say no to? I dunno, Spinner. Truth be told, this is the first I've heard of such a proposal. It sounds like a pretty horrible idea to me, but I'd like to have some details before forming an opinion. Just for shit and giggles, let's run with your hypothesis though. President Obama has offered this as a bone of distraction to the Republican minority. Still sounds pretty horrible. Now, while we already know that Republicans are more likely to give more to charities (Google it) than Democrats, the people who run those NGOs, the people who work for those organizations, are among his most ardent supporters. Is it wise for him to be seen throwing yet another key component of his base under the bus? Is this a win he wants to give the Repubs? High ground he wants to cede? If he believes for a moment that the right would take it as an olive branch of bipartisanship, he is a fool. They would smell blood in a victory that would be popular, and come looking for more. Better to let them them have a mortgage interest cap at $750,000, rather than a half mil. Keep it simple. Ok, I'm playing here, so what the fuck... Say he is serious about this. Is it his goal then to have charities become more heavily dependant on gov't for their funding? That's a pretty fucking authoritarian goal. To tell me someone else is better suited to decide the worthy uses of my charity? There are some damn good organizations where I live. Camps for sick kids. Domestic violence shelters. Food banks. Centers for the homeless. There are also some really crappy ones, and a few total scams. I can't make those choices? A couple times a year, Spinner, the wife and I will spend twice what we normally do on a nice dinner out, to eat so-so bbq and beans, and then spend half a car payment in the auction. We have some really awful art in the downstairs bathroom. Knowing we can throw those receipts in the box with the mortgage interest and medical bills, makes it possible to go squander for a good cause. I see with my own eyes the difference they make in people's lives. I also see the agencies that seem to be getting the fat federal and cooperative grants. They close at 4:00 on Friday (unless they have gone to a 4/10 schedule to save energy). What would such a goal say about our young President? That he truly believes he knows best? I'm not comfortable with that. Especially when we add the fact that a man who has never held any actual power in his life, now holds our highest executive office. Power is a drug far more potent than the cocaine he liked in his younger years. That adds up to some scary shit. Crazy or crazy like a fox? I dunno. How about, dumb or dangerously dumb? It might be moot. A wise old somebody always used to say there was nobody dumber than a smart person doing something completely unfamiliar.
