I have to hope that parental influence goes above and beyond the toys and that what we -teach- our kids tells them more than the bits of plastic they play with.

I grew up with barbies, baby dolls, kitchen sets other representations of sexualized females and women obeying their "proper" roles. With parents that taught me to think I've grown into a strong, intelligent feminist who believes what a woman's role is what she -choses- it to be, and that part of that choice invovles informing our kids but also allowing them to play with toys as what they are.

i agree. Completely. Um folks, newsflash. The world is changing. My mother from the 50's think being gay is GROSS and trys to teach my little one that. You know what i tell my ma? Its a disservice to teach my little one that. Its not about disagreement, because i'll never change my ma's mind. Or judgemental or any of the other things i can think about it. Plainly put, its a disservice to teach our little ones the OLD ways. When they're older.. The world wont be like that. To try and "shelter" them and pass down our judgemental natures that prolly worked for us, will NOT work for them. It'll only harm them. Parents need to keep up with TODAY, teach our children right when the world is wrong. But pretending the world doesnt exist? Heck folks, they're GOING to meet the world ONE day. Dont you want them to be prepared? i for one, want mine to be prepared. i want her to say "yeah ppl dress like that all the time and its okay for them, but i dont want too" But ya know.. if she DOES want to.. well in 20 years if thats what makes her happy so be it.

i hear you all talk and inside my head my mother is talking. "People who do bondage is gross, its disugsting, i cant believe ppl do that stuff" "ewwwww i cant stand that stuff" "Tatoo's are low class" ECT.

Gee, i wonder what she thinks about me, grown up in this "new world" doing all these things that are unheard of in "her" time. And i wonder what your little ones are going to think you think about them.. grown up in their "new world" That you all cant seem to comphrened or understand and think is wrong, gross and disgusting. i will NEVER be a child of the 50's, i was a child of the 90's. My little one, wont be a child of the 90's, she'll be a child of the 2010's. i KNOW that what was "okay" and "right" and "normal" for me, wont be for her. i FOR ONE would rather keep up with the way the world is going, keep my eyes open, so i'll know where she is at.

So yup, dolls are sex objects. They got handcuffs (prolly police cuffs) and middle school kids look like they belong in HS. Whatever. Its the world we live in, deal with it and teach your little ones to deal with it.

Heh, i've already responded like twice, but i gots to do it again. Now when my little one was littler, like 2 years ago, 3 years and daggonit it even as an infant. Raising a small one by myself the first couple of years, self sufficent with out having to work, and forsaking my "partier" friends because i was now a mom, it was literally me and the little one 24 hours a day. So yeah, my TV was on most all the time. Kept me company. But i didnt watch the adult shows. i had it on the kid shows even before the little one could careless. Figured my horror movies wouldnt be that appropriate.

LOL i'm well versed on kid shows! Been watching them the past 4 years cos i sit down and join in when she does. (well that past 2 years she has) Jay Jay anyone? Love Dora. She even teaches ME spanish. Seseme street.. not a favorite and thank god neither is she. Barney.. like the songs.. catchy tunes. Bear.. i like the end song. Teletubbies.. on NO, not the DREADED telly tubbies. We went through a MAJOR phase with them. OMG i watched teletubbies day in and day out it seemed. Scooby do used to not be liked show.. not is.. and so on.

When you look at this stuff. My best advice, is to get down with them. Not only just physically, but MENTALLY. i have found one of THE best places in the world is being down on their level. Step away from you're adult mind and view the world through their eyes WITH THEM. Its really a beautiful place. No negativity, no bad stuff.

The smiles.. not just "receiving them", but sharing them. Throwing that paint (water proof paint mind you LOL) At the wall and sharing a giggle with your little one. The past 4 years, i wasnt an adult. i was a kid and her best friend. One of our most favorite things was destroying ant hills. Evil red ants! Yes and i taught her how to stand back far enough, to use a stick, to shake that stick so the ants couldnt walk up and bite our fingers, and ooo look at the baby ant larva. Heck, who need ant killer?

The accomplishment of FINALLY getting thomas the tank engine track put together. And um folks, violence, its already there in our little ones! She'd giggle like a mad women when she'd set up a "train disaster".

i think you all are nuts. my little one LOVES to put make up on now. Loves to "dress up" Are you trying to tell me its cos she wants to look "sexy"? Huh, lemme box your ears in. She wants to look preettty. Course i remind her she's already pretty and no matter how pretty she is on the outside, whats prettiest is on the insdie. That sometimes ppl look really pretty, but they're actually really ugly

and then she says "why"

Yeah kids want silly toys. By silly I mean it's stupid they have lips that look like a colligen injectionand what toy for babies needs to look like colligen implants. Their good or bad hats look stupid too lol but oh well lol

they are not supose to refer to them as girl or boy toys...rather barbi or hotwheel or what ever they are....Call and let management know.

I disagree with you. I grew up being allowed to dress how I wanted (which was usually goth, with lots of violent symbols including handcuffs, skulls, etc.) I was reading violent books at a young age (I was an avid stephen king fan by 3rd grade.) I watched tons of violent movies (my mom didn't believe in censorship.) I played any video game I wanted (including ones full of violence!) I had parents who thought that South Park was a great family show (and we all know how violent it can be!)

Although everyone swore I'd end up a terrible person because of it, it didn't happen. I was valedictorian of my senior class. Never drank, smoke or did drugs. Never got in any trouble with the law (not even a traffic ticket!) Lost my virginity to my now-ex husband only after I turned 18. Oh and now I work in law enforcement.

Its not the symbols the kids are exposed to...its the personality of the kid. Good kids are gonna grow up good and bad kids are gonna grow up bad, regardless of what you expose them too.

Edited to add that I did grow up to be deviant though...Sexually at least :)

As for the person who talked about misinterpreting symbols, I totally sympathize. Both my parents are cops and we have horses....You wouldn't believe the "questionable" looking items we had lying around the house. It was no suprise to see rope, handcuffs and crops lying on the kitchen table at any given time :)
