MasterG2kTR -> 2012: End of Days......or something else?? (3/1/2009 6:41:33 PM)

I'm sure by now most of you have heard something about the coming cosmic event of 2012 along with all of it's ancient prophecies. Well.....I am sitting here watching another show about this on the History channel. I have been fascinated by this ever since I first learned about it about 30 years ago.

I did something different tonight while watching. I brought up a star gazing program on my pc and did a fast forward to Dec. 21st, 2012. What I found was rather surprising.

First, for those of you who may not be aware, on that day, it is a fact that as the sun rises it will be in direct alignment (as viewed from earth) with the center of the galaxy. What also surprised me is that, on that morning, there will be five other planets in the eastern sky and one directly opposite earth in the western sky for a total of seven. All within a few degrees of direct alignment. Interestingly as well is that eight days earlier (13th) those same planets will be in relatively the same positions and will also be joined by a new moon in the eastern sky too.

What does it all mean? I haven't got the slightest clue. I'm just a geek when it comes to astronomical events.

The ancient prophecies (by modern definitions) say it will be the end of days. We will experience catastrophic events in climate, earthquakes, floods, volcanic activity, etc. Some say it will cause the earth to shift it's magnetic field or possibly a complete reversal of the magnetic field.

Whatever the results of this event, I don't think it will all happen at once and that the days, weeks or even months leading up to it will have a very gradual effect in it all.

For good, bad, or worse I am looking forward to being witness to it.

What are your thoughts? Predictions? (serious or humorous....though I'd prefer serious) Anxieties?

kittinSol -> RE: 2012: End of Days......or something else?? (3/1/2009 6:47:41 PM)

I feel no anxiety: who prophesized that this was to be the end of days? I've heard this kind of thing all my life. If the end of our world is to happen during my lifetime, I'll find comfort in the fact that I will be there to witness a truly awesome moment in the history of humanity.

I CAN'T WAIT [8D] .

thornhappy -> RE: 2012: End of Days......or something else?? (3/1/2009 6:52:36 PM)

Those planets are too far away to affect things here on earth.

Now, are you also talking about the rollover of the Aztec calendar?  All that would do is start over again, not end the world.

MasterG2kTR -> RE: 2012: End of Days......or something else?? (3/1/2009 7:01:18 PM)

It encompasses all things related. Aztec, Mayan, and Egyptian calendars. Precdictions from Nostradamus. Ancient artifacts that all seem to point to the coming event.

Will it all simply start over again? Who knows? One thing is sure, we are going to hear a lot about it between now and then. And, if it is an event that changes life as we know it, we will here about it for generations to come.

No it won't.  http://www.astunit.com/astrocrud/2012.htm

The above website is operated by an actual astronomer, not an amateur Doomsday believer.  It will explain much better than I, why the whole galactic alignment theory is complete nonsense.

What specific "ancient prophecy" are you referring to?  If you mean the completion of the Mayan Long Count Calender, there has been no credible scientific evidence that the Mayans believed this to be "the end of days."  It's simply the completion of a cycle in their calender.

My thoughts?  The 2012 Doomsday predictions are nonsense; they are nothing but paranoia and fanciful thinking.  My predictions?  On 12/12/2012, I will be 37 years old or I will be dead.  Anxieties?  Nope, I don't get worked up just because a date has all 12's in it.

It will probably happen like 2222222222222222222222222222222000000000000000000000000000000000000000111111111111111111111111111111111111111111112222222222222222222222222222222222222222

Do I believe the 2012 prophecy? No, that's Terence McKenna after way too many mushrooms. He stumbled upon the Mayan calander in his ethnobotanical explorations and built a whole mythology around the fact that, according to the Mayan calander, December 23, 2012 is the first day of the new Long Count cycle 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ahau 3 Kankin. (see A Forest of Kings: the Untold Story of the Ancient Maya by Linda Schele and David Freidel, William Morrow & Co., NY, NY 1990; pp 77-84).  The calander is too difficult to explain concisely.

I'm gonna throw a big ass party the day before the world ends. You're all invited.

Owner59 -> RE: 2012: End of Days......or something else?? (3/1/2009 8:48:34 PM)

How about we proceed as if the times don`t "end" and as if their`s a future for our sons and daughters.

That's no fun.

We`ll call it a party....  Yes?

Voodali -> RE: 2012: End of Days......or something else?? (3/1/2009 9:02:09 PM)

I just hope I've found the right bloody slave by then, or the accumulated dust and filth in my home from lack of sissy cleaning at crop-point will create a massive allergenic cloud when everything explodes, causing the few straggling survivors to sneeze their way to an irritating post-apocalyptic death.  Then again, the dust might serve as a nice seasoning for the primordial soup necessary for the next era in existence.  Perhaps it will herald a new beginning for a race of beings comprised of cat hair and bits of glitter.
Or maybe we'll just transcend the physical plane and continue on as boring, floaty, pastel colored beings of  love and light. :(

Hey, thanks for that link.... I poked around a bit. There's a lot of other good stuff there too!

Slaveboy is CM`s own fact-check wizard.

He always does his homework and chimes in at the right times.

TheHeretic -> RE: 2012: End of Days......or something else?? (3/1/2009 9:24:44 PM)

Umm, Slaveboy?  Unless there is a whole other end of the world prophecy I'm missing, the date in question is 12/21/12.  The winter solstice is on December 21.

I'm sure by now most of you have heard something about the coming cosmic event of 2012 along with all of it's ancient prophecies. Well.....I am sitting here watching another show about this on the History channel.

  While you were watching the History channel, I was watching TNT which was broadcasting The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. (By the way, with commercial breaks so long I could have read the actual book during them.)

I think Earth history will be much like the movie for it will go on and on and on....almost without end.

Now human history is another story.  I think we'll wreck the place before the cosmos gets around to it.

So I didn't care about Y2k (talk about your fizzling doomsday scenarios), I won't care about 2012 or the end of the Mayan calendar.

I do hope that all this doomsday talk eventually lowers prices on gas masks.  They look really fun for fetish play.

When I was married I experienced the end of days,

oh, about once a month for two to seven days.

It was known as the time of the endometrium.

However, a good bottle of wine and a fat joint

generally quelled the ensuing prophetic Herricane.

Oops.  You're right, I was thinking all 12's held some significance to folks that believe in this; my mistake.  Never the less, my skepicism of this entire idea of a doomsday in 2012 has merit.  I encourage anyone to read the numerous debunkings of this theory and other pseudoscientific theories by people who know what they're talking about.  If you have a university nearby with an astronomy department, go talk to one of the professors.  For the life of me, I have never understood people gullibly going along with these stories.
