Hi folks-- From time to time people have wondered if you could implant a chip in someone and have them tracked via GPS. There's an article from the EETimes here that shows the technology necessary to do so. (It has a GPS receiver and communicates coordinates via a cellular provider.) That system would be a sizable implant. Here's a quote from the article: "The GPS Snitch was obtained for $299 from Spy Exchange, a local retailer specializing in surveillance gear and related items. An activation fee and service subscription is also required, all handled through the same website that accommodates real-time monitoring. A user with no prior secret agent experience can, on day one, plot the changing location of the GPS Snitch on a Google Map, satellite photo or hybrid of the two. The Snitch can also send position updates to a cell phone in the form of SMS text messages. Perhaps the most intriguing feature is the Snitch's ability to operate from locations that normally interfere with GPS reception. From a moving vehicle, the unit was shown to track location, direction and speed while hiding in the glove compartment and in the trunk. This_One works great for tracking a vehicle in real time. I recommend the few extra bucks for the waterproof case.

I had a gf who`s ex had tracked her after their split with a very expensive hunting dog tracker. She found it and busted his ass and told the cops and the judge. The funniest thing was that the ex-loser had asked for the transceiver back.lol She kept it. I think he had borrowed it and had to buy a new one to replace it.

I've been under the impression that I'm being tracked. I've gotten under my car with a flashlight looking for it. Haven't found it yet. The mindfuck is delicious whether or not I really am being tracked. He just won't give me a straight answer.

Funny, even uncanny that you would mention this now. A buddy of mine just showed me one of those, with the magnets on it. They are pretty strong. He got it from his boss and is charged with planting it on the Wife's boyfriend's car, in anticipation of a nasty divorce, due to his wealth. A simple GPS and a tracker if you want to call it that are two completely different things. The cheapo device, all it has to do is recieve three frequencies and tell you where you are, whereas a tracking device must transmit, to somewhere. This unit is attachable inside a car, if one can get in, but for attachment like under a car has a weatherproof case, and a good size battery pack. It requires this becausee it has to transmit, but the little cheapo devices that simply tell you your location can probably run for years off a couple of watch batteries. Actually the person who showed it to me even though we burn and beer together, tries to stay straight with the law and mentioned the legality of surreptitiously planting such a device on someone's car. I mean he has his CCW and CDL licenses and all that and would like to keep it that way. I had no answer for him. He is not damaging anything, but it is an invasion of someone's privacy, but what is privacy these days ? Practically impossible I think. He got the job done without getting caught, by anyone. All I could say is that as long as the guy doesn't know that is good, but if he does know it could be bad, because if he knows what he is doing he can buy another car and leave that one anywhere he wants, and throw people off. But I have no idea what the cops would have done if they had caught him. Are there laws about this ? Seems there should be, there are laws about damnear everything else, and probably soon to come are laws about how you wipe your ass. Anybody know ? The guy intends to use whatever info he gets in court, so legality is actually an issue. Got me wondering. T PS - And don't even mention it, I know my crowd is not made up of "normal" people, and I like it that way. At least life is not boring. T

Rather than implanting chips on the body having one on their vehicle and one on their cell phone and/or laptop would cover most situations. Now if you wanted to turn a bunch of slaves loose in the woods to track, catch, tie and punish them, you would have a weekend retreat.

~FR~ Can't they implant small chips in us now? I wanna say they were... RFID? I can't remember. Can't they work similar to GPS in that, if you pass a receiver it can record that you've been by?

they make similar trackers for nervous parents. And T, the laws on GP tracking are still being written, so if your friend did get caught and found guilty he could probably win the appeal. It is a lot like the first internet laws really, a bunch of old codgers trying to keep up with all the technological advances. I have seen the ones that are the size of credit--cards, and a friend of mine designed one that attached to and fed off of a cell phone. ETA: Ara, the difference is one of power, the ones that I think you are referring to were not very strong, and could only transmit 50 miles or so, GPS systems can transmit to a satellite that is orbiting at the lowest level. ((Though some actually transmit to one of several Geo-synchronous sats.)) While the implants do exist (They currently use them in pets) they aren't powerful enough to work as true GPS transmitters. the ones that are that powerful are still entirely too expensive for use, not counting the price a surgeon will charge you to implant one (Id go with a plastic surgeon, they are good at implanting things from what I hear :P)

i've seen the child locators for parents, and i think that makes enough sense. also the ones that tell you whether or not your kid really did drive to school or if they drove elsewhere. (alot of phones have these things, too, don't they?) GPS is taking over, on the platform of convenience. i'm not sure i'd be comfortable with it, though. unless it was part of like... what... a spy roleplay or something. =p har har

If anyone really wants to know where you are that badly, there are still cheaper and easier ways to find out GPS doesnt worry me, honestly I am used to the idea that I can be monitored at any time, the trick, as Scott Adams once said is to be soo boring that nobody with the power to spy on you has a good reason to :P

If you use an ipod or iphone, here is a free program: http://www.instamapper.com/iphone On an iphone, this is pretty accurate. On an ipod, it depends on wifi density to track you. In the city of Chicago, this works perfectly. In the 'burbs... who knows? You have to leave the program running on the phone, so battery life is effected. Enjoy!
