ORIGINAL: paul12000 It is fun to get into these type of discussions. I may not be Al Gore, Super Scientist, but I do know how to research and get the proper information for myself, and in this case, we'll look at a goverment funded organization, that is paid to actually collect and study temperatures. I'm more than sure that no one would take there time looking at this information, cause none of it fits the global warming theory. Yes, there is an admitted warming trend in the past few years, however, if it is a constant thing, then how did we go from the 2nd warmest year in 2007, to the 9th warmest year in 2008? That is a big difference there. Yes, 2008 is recorded to be far cooler than 2007, and according to a story that I read, (link coming in a moment) it is no different than back in the 1950's. http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2008_temps.html According to the NASA site, in several publications, there is a natural cycle at work, including La Nina and El Nino, as well as the suns rays. Another site that explains why Global Warming is on hold. http://www.icecap.us/ And lots of other global warming stories here. With all these scientific data of natural occurences that is going on all over, how do we, the humans on the planet, involved with these cycles? If we are influencing it that much, what measurable evidence is there to point to us, instead of natural cycling occurences? You are fundamentally confused about the concept of global warming. Global warming is a part of global climate change. No one thinks that the earth will simply get hotter until it catches on fire or something. Like you said, there are obviously cycles involved, but they are ascending cycles. The low point of the "cycle" 50 years from now will be the midpoint of the what the cycle is today. When the ice caps finally give-in (Or begin deteriorating faster), North and Central America will actually become MUCH colder, because of the cold water entering the Gulf Stream. Very cold weather is essentially one of the few signs of global warming that we can see without looking at numbers. Cold weather is NOT any indication of global warming not existing, in fact, extremely cold temperatures are more of a harbinger of global warming than any thing else. Global warming is the dangerous part of the global climate change that humans are creating. The fact that some places are getting cooler than their usual climate is simply a sign that that they will, in time, get also get hotter than their usual climate. Global climate change and global warming are inextricably linked, but global warming is the part that will end up killing us, which is why it is of importance.
