suhlut -> sherry sherry quite contrary.. How will your garden grow? (3/5/2009 8:10:33 AM)

Yeah.. its that time of year again!
Time to start planning a garden..

i have grown gardens of veggies and fruits for around 8 or so years.. but they were always rather small gardens and were learning experiences mostly, and resulted in small output in quantity.

Last year, after making my garden a bit larger, and thus making it impossible to hand weed, well.. i listened to bad advice.. and my garden was a complete failure.

This year, i plan on making it even LARGER.. Bought my own rottotiller.. and will be going to the Amish (my father is close friends with an Amish family) for rotted and composted horse manure once again..

i also plan on learning how to can this year so i can can what i wont freeze.

This year i am once again attempting a few veggies i have no previous luck growing (damned green peppers..lol) and also trying a few new veggies that i havent ever tried growing before. I plan on this years garden to once again be a learning garden.. where i will carefully watch what works and what doesnt, but i am also hoping for a much larger yeild this year compared to past gardens.. at least that is the hope.

i think home gardens are going to be more and more popular.. esp with the way the economy is.. and have seen a huge growth of people growing gardens locally. That makes buying seeds a bit harder, with such a huge demand.. and so.. i have already purchased this years seeds. i think i may have been the first this year, lol..cause there were plenty of seeds to choose from, and i was there to buy the second day after they were out for sale. i also purcashed a small indoor greenhouse, so will be starting my garden seeds inside. (Tried that last year, but didnt have a green house..and my cats LOVED LOVED LOVED eating up the fresh greens.. and so all my work went into kitty tummies... THIS year the greenhouse will make sure the cats cant get to em)

i am so glad that i havent only just begun learning, because the 8 years of gardens have taught me a ton of valuable information.. i feel bad for those whom are only just begining to learn, failure rates can be so high and if they are counting on the garden for a lasting winter food supply, well that is much harder then most realize.

So, i say if you have room to grow a garden, but never have, start now. Use this years garden as a learning experience.. and gain whatever knowledge you can, before a home garden becomes a necessity for a food source.

Sharing your bounty come fall.. would also be great.

This year, "sherry's" garden will grow.. Peas, green peppers, acorn squash, snap peas, carrots, 2 varieties zucchini, watermelon, green beans, sweet corn, butternut squash, Pumpkins for halloween carving, cucumber, tomato, small sugar pumpkins for pie, yellow summer squash, and something i have never heard of before ~ Kohlrabi.

As always, we have two fruit trees (an apple and a peach) plus we were promised last years strawberry plants will come back this year..if not, we will plant more.

Soooo.. all fellow gardeners.. what will YOUR garden grow this year?

And please share any points and tips, or hints for how to grow a garden with better success.. Especially to help those just learning.

My biggest issue are weeds.. The garden has increased to such a size that i cant hand pull weeds, and i have no clue how farmers keep away weeds, cause they surely cant be out there hand pulling weeds.. so if anyone has and help with that..tips ect.. please share?

I can, but was thinking of getting a food dehydrator this year.
Looking at tomato plants, for sauce and for pickled green tomatoes, as well as to eat fresh.

Used to grow seedless baby watermelons, haven't done that in a couple of years, probably will do again. But I prefer to get started plants than to try to start now with seeds. Don't have a greenhouse to grow my own starters and the windowsill is too cold with insufficient light.

Oh yeah, spring is here and I am looking at the veggies, herbs and flowers in the little pots and checking out the seed packets.  We have some more rain and frost coming in but once that is past the fun starts.

ooh yeah V... how could i forget to mention that i also purchased my FLOWER seeds also? Enough for the front of the house border garden area, both HUGE planter pots for  front of steps.. and the two kitchen flower window boxes. Petunias everywhere..

plus.. i grow a line of sunflowers down a side fence in the backyard.. gotta make it really pretty this year.. since our second UM is graduating..and will be holding a grad party in the backyard again this year.

I would love to have some plants inside the house but the lighting in here is too limited and any species would have to be OK for the cat to nibble.

suhlut -> RE: sherry sherry quite contrary.. How will your garden grow? (3/5/2009 9:14:31 AM)

Catnip and another plant called Catgrass might both work..and be something the cats REALLY love to nibble on. Both can be grown from seed packets.. i've seen both for sale here this year.

I've thought of a garden for a couple years but want to make this year the year that I actually break ground. I'm going to start small. Thanks for starting this thread.

Congrats on your grad. party to be!!

Both are good suggstions.  You can also find kitty greens for sale at pet stores, I should look into that.

Farmers keep weeds at bay with herbicides. I mulch like crazy. Grass clippings are great. With a three acre yard, I have an endless supply. Also, the best thing for me about mulching, is much less watering is needed. I just let the clippings dry then rake them up and spread them around all my plants. I've got crap soil so all gardening has to be done with imported soil in raised beds. That, and time, rather limits my vegetable growing. Thank god for farmer's markets.

I try to use as few chemicals on my food products as I can. However, I have come to the conclusion that Sevin powder is a must on my peppers and tomatoes to keep those nasty ugly big green worms from eating them.

I have a big orchard that I am constantly adding to. We had several years of back luck that destroyed most of it so what I have now is a few bearing trees and a growing quantity of young trees. The apples have been kicking ass for several years, my peach trees were virtually destroyed by an ice storm so I've replanted those also. The cherry trees are doing great. I've got two young apricot trees that will someday be awesome. Pear trees take longer to mature so while they are original to the orchard, they haven't really done much yet. This year I am going to add some nut trees to the collection, english walnut and pecan.

I've also got a small red raspberry patch that I am going to add to this year. Wild blackberries are all over the place around the farm, ditches, down by the creek, the edges of the timbers, etc......just have to fight the mosquitoes off and pick them.

Pretty soon it will be morel season.........just YUM!!

and yeah.. my inside of my house.. is nearly bare of plants.. i may have a bit of a green thumb when it comes to outdoor gardens..but when it comes to houseplants.. well i am certain death for them.

The only plant i have inside.. is one on my kitchen counter.. under a window.. that came from a funeral arrangement i took home after my mothers funeral. No idea how it is still alive.. after almost three years.. i only repotted it from the basket it came in.. into a more durable pot.. water it here n there.. and it still lives.

La T,

How do you keep the birds out of your fruit trees?  Do you use netting?

sirsholly -> RE: sherry sherry quite contrary.. How will your garden grow? (3/5/2009 9:23:30 AM)

this thread has me itching to play in the dirt!! I can't wait!!

LaTigresse -> RE: sherry sherry quite contrary.. How will your garden grow? (3/5/2009 9:28:47 AM)

Vend, no I don't. I just let them have their share. They really don't get that high a percentage to make it a problem.

Something I really enjoyed this winter.....
We had a HUGE bumper crop of apples. I made and canned, so much applesauce I was sick of looking at the stuff. I froze a bunch or apples for pies etc. I gave some away. I still had hundreds on the trees and no one seemed to want to come and pick them. So, there they hung. Yet they did not go to waste. The birds just loved them this winter. I was glad to see it.

I have a high coveted, growing collection, of seed and plant catalogues!

suhlut -> RE: sherry sherry quite contrary.. How will your garden grow? (3/5/2009 9:30:32 AM)

aww holly.. i know exactly how you feel..

Even though my back garden limits much playing in the dirt.. with the exception of transplanting my seedlings..and pushing in the seeds that cant be seeded inside ahead of time.. well the front flower border.. thats where i get to push my fingers through soil.. bask in the heat of spring sun.. breathe in the sweet scents of new grass and lil baby leaves on the trees... i just love love love smelling freshly turned soil.. sifting it through my fingers as i breathe in the scent.

i swear sometimes.. i can actually feel the nuttiness of cabin fever after a long cold winter.. just melting away.in that moment.
i love growing my flowers in front.

Vendaval -> RE: sherry sherry quite contrary.. How will your garden grow? (3/5/2009 9:31:20 AM)

Having such a bounty to share is truly wonderful.

We had a back yard with fruit trees; apple, avocado, guava, lemon and apricot.  The birds really liked the apricots and my step-dad was always trying ways to scare them off.

The years we didnt remove all the apples and peaches from the two trees.. we had deer in the back eating them.. nothing ever really goes to waste *smiles

And speaking of fruit trees.. we tried planting a pear tree a few years ago..but it never lived.. i never knew it would have taken so long to get fruit yeilds.. prob a good thing it didnt live. i really envy you that you have cherry trees.. i have been wanting some for a long time..but everytime i have priced them at the garden shops..they have been VERY costly.. well maybe this year.. who knows.

Garden work [:'(][:'(][:'(]

As much as I enjoyed all the fruits and vegetables in there when I was younger and living at home, there are also a horrendous amount of crawly creatures [:'(][:'(][:'(]

Therefore my garden just contains all the flowers you folks probably don't like to have in yours [:D]

lol Pho... what kinda flowers do You grow?

as for crawlies..n bugs n stuff.. well.. im not to crazy bout them either.. but as long as they don't sting or bite.. i can pretty much ignore them

Last year though.. i happened to be inspecting my rose bushes in front.. and found MILLIONS of lil green things.. sticking to the undersides of the leaves..

i was flabergasted..cause i havent ever seen these before.. but after being informed the lil green seed like things were actually bugs..well i had to purchase aphid killer..to save my roses. yick

Running a hand spade through soil..to loosen it up.. and sifting it through my fingers.. i have come across some rather strange looking things... from pure white gummy looking bugs..to big ugly bettles... and used to get all grossed out if one touched me..let alone an earthworm... but over time.. i have gotten over it.

Year before last..when my garden was still small enough to hand weed.. i was out in my garden performing the chore.. wearing shorts and a t shirt..and scootching down row after row... and happened to scootch myself into an anthill... and damn..those things hurt when they bit me...all over my bare thighs. So..as long as they dont bite or sting.. i am fine.
