By harvesting i am pretty sure they were refering to the large fields of corn, wheat, etc. Even with a small area of corn, weeds are simply ignored.

and as a nother notion, don't use hay to cover grass seed when planting. You'll have the same problem. Use straw. No seeds in it.

i can't wait to get the garden going :D the Person has made a wonderfully complicated plan that ought to make our little plot excrutiatingly efficient, so i'm looking forward to it. ^_^ last year was really haphazard but we still had a pretty good yield, so htis year should be really nice. i'd really like to build our soil back up with some compost or something. but i dont think there's enough time to make our own anymore. what kinds of things will you be growing? we're going to have yellow and zucchini squash, acorn squash, tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplants, sugar snap peas, lima beans, carrots, radishes, umm... strawberries, cantaloupe, and... something else...? mushrooms i think? plus an herb garden :D should be cool

Ahh, sherry... the more I drink, the better the landscaping looks! [:)] Since I don't eat vegetables, and my wife won't let me slaughter livestock, I just do the grocery store thing [&:] And the grass, trees, and whatever the hell else is out there should thank their lucky stars I can't afford to pave a couple acres and put up a big-ass garage. Economy of scale FTMFW! [:)]

That reminds me of a statement someone sent in to a news paper once chastising hunters for killing animals and how you should be ashamed of yourself and go to the grocery store and get your meat, where at least there no animals were harmed in the process. Or there was a joke, I can't remember all of it, but this guy wouldn't eat something cause it came from a part of the animal he thought was disgusting, and then he saidI'll have eggs in stead, and was flabbergasted to realize what part of a chicken eggs came out of. quote: ORIGINAL: StrangerThan . As a mulch my mother and step-dad use strips of old carpeting cut just wide enough to fit between the rows. Holds in the water, keeps the weeds down between the rows, and it's easy on the knees! At the end of the year they roll up the carpet and save it for the next year. Once it is too old and rotten to be used they just toss it and watch for places that are having their carpet replaced to get some more free carpet. I always liked to use a light weight cardboard that was corrigated on just one side for mulch. I got it at work where the new cabinets I installed were wrapped with it, so it was free. Once it had been wet down a time or two it conformed to the ground nicely and didn't try to blow around. At the end of the season, or the beginning of the next season you just tilled the cardboard into the ground as you prepared the garden spot. I HAVE used black plastic as well, but didn't like it nearly as well. For those of you that have bunny problems I hope you will give this a try and give some feedback since I have only read about this. The article I read said that to keep rabbits out of the garden you should go to the local zoo and get a few days supply of big cat dung and spread it around the outer edge of your garden. The article said "lion dung" but I assume that the dung from any of the big cats should work, It may even work to keep deer out as well, though they weren't mentioned in the article.

When I lived in New Hampshire we couldn't really plant anything until June 1st that far North. There could be late frosts. It's fun to be living in S. Carolina where we have 2 or more growing seasons. I love watermellon and it's nice to see pick-up trucks on corners and gas stations here full of watermellon and a guy or gal selling it right out of the back of the truck.

StrangerThan, thanks for the tip on freezing corn.. i plan on freezing whatever cant or shouldnt be canned..(green peppers are better frozen.. then what would result from trying to can them..for example.. but i NEVER heard that you could basically freeze the whole thing.. silk and husks included.. i cant WAIT to try it.. and now that Youve given me this tip.. i am sitting here thinking that i might go buy more corn seed.. and plant a LARGER area of corn!

lol Phoe.. the biting was awful yes, but taught me a lesson.. not to dress so scantily while doing garden chores..for one.. wearing cotton slacks loose and freeflowing make the job a bit cooler..and keep the ants from biting my thighs.. and i also watch where i scootch before moving now.. so i havent been bitten nor stung since. Bugs don't bother me.. its usually true if you leave them alone..they will leave you alone.

Every week or so, go take the tarp off and stir it up from the bottom really good. After a few weeks the weed seeds are pretty much all dead. The longer you leave it, the more weed free and dirt like it will be. LaT i recently talked to a "farmer" here..and he shared a tip with me.. of a different way to handle to seed problem in horse manure.. He told me..that if i placed a few shovelfuls of horse manure into a large bucket.. and then filled to the top with water... that the water would leech out the nutrients and good stuff from the manure.. and to use that "manure tea.". as a water source for watering the plants.. and to dispose of what is left in the bottom of the bucket.. into a compost pile. So.. i might do that this year..sounds kinda gross and smelly and a mess.. but..it makes sence.

Mark your calendar, and plan on going there to go to recognize your new seedlings or a day early. Ex: assuming you plant after a fresh tilling, hence no weeds yet, If your packet says your seedlings will emerge in 12- 14 days, go a few days before they are due to pop through, and gently whisk away any tiny seedlings of weeds that pop up with your favorite hand rake or hoe of choice(not to disturb the seedlings though). Definately mark your rows, because they will have different germination dates. This should isolate your new seedlings, and they should then be markable or recognizable. Interestingly a lot of plants look very similar at the beginning of their growth period. Manure that has aged into black dirt is commonly called black gold....! :) I do remember an old "Victory Garden" show where they showed how to kill seedlings as well as some bacteria with covering a piece of garden with two layers of clear plastic, weighting the ends down. It helped raise the temp of the sun to kill things off, but I don't remember how long or what time of the season it was. Similar to what LaT mentioned above. You are getting a lot of people all fired up for the new season...me included ! :) Hugs, Snug i am getting myself all fired up for the season!..lol its been a LONG cold winter here..and i am trying to rush spring along.. feeling way to cabinfever nutty!..argh!

Farmer's version of a practical joke. I had the quintessential aunt from New York city when it came to farm folk's stereotypes. She nearly fainted when she learned that we dug potatoes out from under those rows of green plants after they'd withered up. She was like... you got those out of the GROUND? I'm still debating how much and what to plant this year. With dad home on hospice, I won't be able to devote as much time to things like weeding as I really Need to have, in order to grow a large plot. What I'm hoping to do is actually to spend the summer doing a complete landscaping project on the backyard, to compliment the deck which was built during the summer/fall Last year. If things go according to plan (as if they Ever go according to Plan) I'll be doing herb garden planting along the pair of pathways that are getting put into the backyard, along the sides of the mini-stream that is being dug. The "flower/herb" beds along that stream and along the walkways will carry a variety of herbs and medicinal flowering plants. Several more roses are being placed along 2 of the 3 fencelines - the third already has Blueberry and Blackberry bushes. There's another spot in the back yard, removed from where the stream and koi pond are going, which has good soil and drainage for a small garden plot - not nearly as much space as I would Like to have, but sufficient for a small plot for myself. That plot is currently planned for potatoes, tomatos, yellow crookneck squash, okra, green beans, carrots of 2 varieties, and onions. (Think "soup plot" lol)

Thank my mom. She called me a week or so ago and said I needed to come get some corn and beans as they were going to throw it out in preparation for this year's crop if I didn't. I went. She cooked dinner and pulled out all these ears wrapped in plastic that had never been touched, tossed them in the microwave and 5 minutes later I was eating corn that tasted like it had just come from the garden. On top of the corn I took home several jars of canned beans, some frozen beans, frozen okra, and canned green tomatoes. They had problems with their tomatoes and blossom end rot last year. I told her I'd fix that problem for them this year. Since dad was still giving away bags and bags of tomatoes last year, he'll be swamped with them this year. They have 22 acres in the country. My brother has another 15 or so not far from them. I have a couple of acres in North Carolina where I used to grow a garden, but too far to drive for that now. My current house is a lake house. Not much room for a garden here so I think I'll help my dad some this year. Honestly, we could feed the entire extended family, vegetable wise, on a couple of acres. Dad seems to be the only one who has the time and inclination to do it though. But I always get the urge when the weather starts warming up and they're only a few miles away. So maybe I'll vent some of that urge on his garden this year.

Yeah.. i know Holly.. and it was a mistake to listen and take someones word like i did.. a costly mistake.. but a valuable lesson learned.. and wont ever be a mistake i make again.
