As Maya clearly explained the reasoning behind the sentence,  that was the only solution to keep this criminal locked up away from the general population. Even of he was found guilty of first degree murder, the maximum sentence given would be life though he'd be eligible for parole in 25 years. Thereby he could be back on the streets after serving a partial life sentence. I'd rather see him being held indefinitely in a mental institution for the rest of his years then take the chance he'll be back on the streets in 25 years.

A bit of all three, YoursMistress.

from the Native American perspective, the murderer was every bit as much a victim as the man he killed--if not more so.

I do not understand your reference to the North American native angle.... as the murderer is an Asian immigrant  .. not native american

Th wendigo legends goes beyond ethnicity. While the legend is mostly repeated in native communities, most of the stories repeated about the wendigo involve white men (the most famous being a doctor killing and eating most of a small town in northern Alberta)

edited to fix the province :)

Whoa!  Those types of stories beat the typical ghost under the stairs ones told around a campfire by far.

GreedyTop -> RE: Bus Beheading Suspect Will Not Go To Prison (3/5/2009 8:56:06 PM)

wasn't here some b-grade movie called Manitou about something similar?

Vendaval -> RE: Bus Beheading Suspect Will Not Go To Prison (3/5/2009 9:01:11 PM)

Yeah, it is listed both on badmovies.com and rottentomatoes.com

This is the synopsis from rotten tomatoes,

"There's a "devil" of a tumor growing on Karen Tandy's back -- literally. The growth is actually a demonic, 3-foot tall, 400-year-old Native American, that has somehow managed to get inside Karen's upper body! A heroic medicine man must find a way to exorcise the unwanted guest, before it's too late."

I'd just hate to be on the same bus that's taking him to malfunction junction.

ha hah...There is a whole page in Wikipedia about the Wendigo and an entry about this attack and how it shares similarities with "Wendigo Psychosis".  Never know what you will hear about on CM.

popeye1250 -> RE: Bus Beheading Suspect Will Not Go To Prison (3/5/2009 9:21:19 PM)

Yeah but it's better for the family.
It's much easier to get to this sob in a luney bin than in a prison!
You just walk in dressed as a doctor and give him a shot of drano and walk out.

MasterKalif -> RE: Bus Beheading Suspect Will Not Go To Prison (3/5/2009 9:28:00 PM)

this story is atrocious and shows the flaws of the Canadian justice system...probably put in place by the socialists who are always afraid to apply real justice.I am not in favor of the death penalty per se, but this is a mock of the victims...I would like that judge to look into the mother's eyes and say that he would have ruled in the same manner if it had been his child or daughter....

It seems in most of the western world we see these spineless judges who are afraid to impose the full weight of the law...specially in a macabre killing of an innocent man. I, being from Chile also have to agree the new "american-style" justice system in Chile is also worse than the old court system under the Napoleonic code which was still in place...where now we have the spiral door for criminals (in and out) and where they are given symbolic sentences of 2 yrs for killing someone....because judges cannot be trusted to make their criteria or mind as they lack common sense, as in the case with this Canadian judge. At least if Canadian law does not allow for a harsher sentence, he should show his discomfort and state the law should be changed accordingly.

Just my two cents. It is cases like this that makes me want to have countries institute public hangings again like in the 18th century.

Ummm if you don't like it, don't move here? Obviously the guy was not all there. Sane people don't eat people on buses and save some in ziplock bags for later. Putting him in the general population of a prison would be a terrible idea, both for him and potentially for other prisoners. This way he can get the help he needs, and the victims family won't have to worry about the potential of him getting out on parole.

Of COURSE he has a mental disorder.  He killed someone and ATE them!  >.<  Good lord...  I don't even know what to say.

Witnesses said Li attacked McLean unprovoked as their bus traveled at night along a desolate stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway.... An agreed statement of facts between the prosecution and defense detailed how passengers stood outside the bus as Li stabbed McLean dozens of times and beheaded and mutilated his body.

Am I the only person who sees some real fucking sickos in this picture besides the guy on the bus?

GreedyTop -> RE: Bus Beheading Suspect Will Not Go To Prison (3/5/2009 11:25:55 PM)

my recollection of the original story, K, was that Li had attacked anyone else who tried to stop him....

No. I had a similar reaction when I heard that same detail on the news. I'm not sure I'd call the other passengers sickos, but they clearly had a crisis of courage. I'm not going to call them cowards, because I wasn't there, but I will say that I can't imagine any circumstances under which I'd stand idly by while someone hacked up and devoured another human being.

BbwCanaDomme -> RE: Bus Beheading Suspect Will Not Go To Prison (3/5/2009 11:33:55 PM)

From what I heard they tried to intervene but he was already dead, so they did the smart thing and got the fuck off the bus.

The operative word there is "anyone" (singular). I admit that I don't know the makeup of the passenger list, but if there were three or more able-bodied men aboard that bus, standing around outside passing the popcorn while some poor guy is getting murdered is not my idea of a healthy attitude.

I think I recall that several people did try... until he started waving the knife at them....
