I find this sad, and even more sad are the comments about this guy. Yes he is Unhealthy and Yes he is Fat but he is still a Human Being and should not be treated like he is somehow sub-human because of his weight.

Thanks for this Steel.......

i find this thread very very sad indeed. People fail to realize that what humans say to each other has the power to save lives and what people say to each other has the power to destroy lives...

I'm inclined to agree with this, especially after a conversation with a few of my girl friends today.  We were talking about about body image issues and how hateful people can be with respect to people who are a little overweight, not to mention morbidly obese.  If this were to happen to your child, you would be devestated as a parent.  There's really no difference, these people are still someone's kids.

I agree. People turn to food for comfort so when you mock someone for their weight you are actively not helping the problem. No one is innocent of making snide comments but *shrugs* I don't see why people can't be happy that he's lost so much weight and he's working to lose more. Once you start to get fat you start to think it doesn't matter. So you eat more and you gain more weight. And then it really doesn't matter so what the hell. You're already stuck in the plus size stores, might as well enjoy one of the few pleasures you've got left and it gets worse and worse.

I suppose that probably doesn't mean anything to people who haven't been there and have issues with their eating.

The sad stuff is watching the fat parents eating crappy food with their fat kids... it's a horrible cycle of bad health, and so incredibly difficult to break!  Getting kids to eat decently is enough of a challenge, I  can only imagine how it must be when there's a giant array of junk to tempt them!

I don't really agree with this. I think kids learn to have an unhealthy palate through the food choices parents make for them. If a kid never has candy, is he going to crave it? He'll undoubtedly be exposed to it with his friends, but imagine if the parents of all his friends don't give their kids candy either. My cousin wouldn't allow her kids to have candy. They did have it when they were older, but they never developed a big craving for it. Candy being just one of the many poor choices out there.

Regardless of genetics or any other issues, one can choose to be healthy. Sure it isn't easy, but those who eat to enjoy one of the few pleasures in life are in denial. You either make unhealthy lifestyle choices for yourself, or you get real and make the healthy ones. If people would fully realize just what those food choices and lack of exercise are really doing to their health, they would change. I did.

Oh sweet mother of pearl Aynne, I love that video clip, when ever I feeel down I watch it again, absolutely hysterical.
As to the OP, I feel very hopeful for this guy, applaud that he is trying to lose weight and wish him the best for the future, the fact that he is newly married and in love is something I hope that will go a long way to helping him thru this. Whatever brought him to this point will always be relevent  to his future and issues, however he is trying to do something about it.
Good luck
Lucy

I know Lucy! Try staying mad and watching that clip. impossible.

I agree to with your assessment. I wish the man well. There is obviously a really broken spirit in there, and he is trying.

You think they don't know? They know. They know fully because every single person like you who thinks it's so easy because either they haven't been there or they are one of the lucky few who it easy for takes it upon themselves to tell them. I just lost thirty pounds and trust me - I heard it from everybody. But I wasn't ready.

It's difficult and it's difficult on many levels, particularly the more weight you have to lose. To those who food is a comfort, your scorn simply makes everything worse. It's exactly the same yelling at an anoxoric girl for wasting food. It's pointless, accomplishes nothing and makes things worse.

First, congrats on the weight loss. I know it isn't easy.

Secondly, I suggest you re-read my post. I said "it isn't easy". It's never been easy. It was never easy for me. Yes, I agree that one has to be ready, in the sense of ready to accept reality. I didn't do it until I was smacked upside the head with reality.

I am aware you gave lip service to the fact that it isn't easy. Calling people in denial because they aren't ready yet doesn't do much to show that you realize it. People lose and gain weight for lots of reasons. Expecting everyone to do and think the way you do is just plain silly. For some people, it's more than health and it goes beyond denial. They know exactly what they are doing and they just don't care.

When they do try to change, they are vunerable. Those first few pounds feel like nothing and it doesn't show much. So when they go out and they are still mocked, why should they bother? Obviously no one is going to keep their nose of their business till they look like supermodels.

I'm glad you changed your life. But I highly doubt that you've dealt with the emotional issues that severely overweight people have because it goes so much farther than reality and logic. Weight Watchers, for example, has not helped so many people lose so much weight because they feel the need to smack people upside the head with reality and tell them that they are in denial. Support and understanding does amazing things.
