President Obama will overthrow the ban on federal dollars being used towards embryonic stem cell testing.  This doesn't come as a surprise....but i remember living in a pretty solidly enmeshed red state, bible-belt, Bush lovin' folks, many of whom didn't know what an ebryo was (and i'm not being facetious, here) were preached a message about something that was relatively unknown to them....but they were made to fear and distrust it, nevertheless.

i wonder have things changed over the past few years, or will Pres.Obama be meeting with his first full on assault from the Religious right?  Should be interesting to watch.  i always thought personally that the stem cell debate was a smoke and mirrors trick, sort of like the gay marriage uproar....created by the powers that be at the time to take the American people's minds off Iraq, and the economy woes. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090309/ap_on_go_pr_wh/obama_stem_cells

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is ending former President George W. Bush's limits on using federal dollars for embryonic stem cell research, with advisers calling the move a clear signal that science — not political ideology — will guide the administration.

The problem is that the riligious fanatics have somewhat successfully made it seem that this research somehow requires an abortion. As such, the uninformed had a bad reaction to the idea, and they didn't feel like educating themselves. So, Bush banned it figuring it was an easy way to suck up to the religious right. The ban went into effect, and many of our best and brightest all took research positions in other countries. Orther countries, of course, now have an eight year lead on the US in this feild of research.

It's just another example of how Bush, looking for political expediency, fucked over the United States.

This should have been reversed on day one.

Suck it, luddite republicans!

I'm for it.

Vendaval -> RE: Stem Cell Research...your thoughts??? (3/9/2009 5:29:44 AM)

I think it is a good move but there will be political fallout.  The Forums here have had some very long, heated debates about this issue.

kittinSol -> RE: Stem Cell Research...your thoughts??? (3/9/2009 5:40:58 AM)

Politicians can temporarily stand in the way of progress, but in the end scientific research will always win. This is a progress that should never have been halted: shame on those who stood in the path of potentially life-saving science for eight years, and who chose to throw all those frozen embryos on the trash heap.

i am DANCING in joy..over the news!

Its a sad sad fact that Bush really fucked people over with banning the research.. and that other countries like China..are now lightyears AHEAD of the US.. but we have some of the BEST scientists in this country..and i have no worries we can still play catchup..

Facing a hereditary disease.. of which i face 50% odds.. Huntingtons.. i FULLY believe that stem cell research will likely have a HUGE part in finding a cure!

Please.. pray for my family.. and so many others that stem cell research might help find cures.

As far as i can trace the disease back..in my family.. would be to my Maternal Grandmother.. she died when i was a few months old.. My own mother inherited the disease.. and now.. my mother has 6 live children.. all of us at a risk of inhereting it at 50/50 odds..

My brother was recently tested and the test shows that he will develop the disease.
None of my sisters nor i have been tested as of yet..none of them seem interested.. but i tried being tested three years ago..and came up against an awful doctor that refused to sign the blood draw for the test.

And now, my eldest has gone against my advice..and gotten herself pregnant..so she is possibly bringing the disease into a whole new generation.

Stem cell research is so very important. It has angered me terribly that Bush banned it like he did.. and i fully believe that if Bush had a disease like Huntingtons in his family.. it would have NEVER been banned..

RacerJim -> RE: Stem Cell Research...your thoughts??? (3/9/2009 5:46:30 AM)

The problem is liberal left fanatics obfuscate the fact that an embryo is a complete human being, not as defined by religious fanatics but rather as defined by our best and brighest scientists, therefore sucking out stem-cells therefrom is indeed the same as abortion...murdering a hapless human being.  BTW: The results of those eight years of embryonic stem-cell research in foreign countries is what, MarsBonFire, precisely?  And how many hapless human beings were murdered to get those results?

kittinSol -> RE: Stem Cell Research...your thoughts??? (3/9/2009 5:48:17 AM)

The cells come from frozen embryos resulting from IVF that would have been thrown away anyway. Are you against IVF too?

As I was saying, kitten....[8|]

kittinSol -> RE: Stem Cell Research...your thoughts??? (3/9/2009 6:04:38 AM)

Your wisdom awes me, but I'm still amazed that some people react so virulently and so quickly when information is so easily available [8D].

Eh...'tis not wisdom when ignorance is on the repeat cycle.

samboct -> RE: Stem Cell Research...your thoughts??? (3/9/2009 6:34:05 AM)

Seems to me Obama is living up to some of his campaign promises.....and as a scientist- it's a shot of oxygen from being down in a submarine for a long, long time....

Just to kinda set the record a little less curved if not straight.  Bush did not "ban stem cell research", including embryonic stem cells that were created prior to August, 2001. Since 2003, the federal government has spent $122 million on human embryonic stem cell research,  an additional $37 million a year in both 2007 and 2008.  In total, the federal government spent $2.32 billion dollars on stem cell research from 2003-2006, and probably $500,000,000 since...not exactly chicken feed.  In all of the world wide research, including the Chinese that you say are lightyears ahead of the United States, have any beneficial results been found with respect to embryonic stem cell research?  No!
I an not pro-abortion but if someone want to have one they can do anything with their bodies they want to in a free society.  If they want to donate embryo's or eggs to seed in a petrie dish, be my guest.  But now hundreds of millions of dollars will be diverted away from adult stem cell research which HAS in fact shown potential and many people whose medical issues might be solved will have to wait for another day.
It's not science that won here...it's politics. It's the same sort of "voodoo science" that has hundreds of billions of dollars going into "save the planet" idiocy while the financial system of the world is in a state of collapse, attacks business when we are in a recession and need business to create jobs, and plans to increase taxes and limit the amount of money that can be given to charity. And so this Administration continues pushing down the path of their Big Government agenda, strewing "rose pedals" on the path for the drones that blindly walk. Ya...we are getting change...more than anyone left of center could have anticipated.

~FR~

It'll be interesting to see if they find anything... but it's severely hyped up and more of a political move than scientific, in my opinion.

housesub4you -> RE: Stem Cell Research...your thoughts??? (3/9/2009 8:18:18 AM)

I do not believe idology should stand n the way of science.  It is sad that in the year 2009 there are still people who believe that Dinosars waked the earth with man.  One of them even became President.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Stem Cell Research...your thoughts??? (3/9/2009 8:22:37 AM)

Ain't that the truth.

Welcome to the 21st century, everybody.  We might even get universal health care--like every other advanced nation.  We might even get bridges that aren't crumbling.  Dare I hope that we might even get a functioning railroad system?  (Ours is about on par with that of Malawi or Mozambique.)

I tend to agree...

Being Canadian and being guilty of not following US politics (well any politics for that matter), I can't comment on what Bush banned or didn’t, however I can say that during the time of his presidency, two research groups have discovered a procedure for using viruses to turn human skin cells into embryonic stem-like cells and the procedure didn’t involve embryos whatsoever. Although it was my understanding that this discovery was by Japaneses scientists, the point of mentioning it is… I think when scientists are restricted in one area temporarily, they will just focus on finding other ways to achieve their goal until such a time comes when they are no longer restricted.

I often wonder though, if the controversy in stem cell research is less about where they are obtained and more about its link to “cloning?”

Maya2001 -> RE: Stem Cell Research...your thoughts??? (3/9/2009 8:43:01 AM)

Researchers in Toronto just made a recent break through  in embryonic stem cell-like cells from adult skin cells

one of the biggest problem with using adult tissue , was the drugs/viruses  used to reprogram the cell so would act like embryonic stem cell-like cells was that cancers would result in the  tissue

http://www.healthzone.ca/health/article/595058
The toronto break through  may finally allow science to get away from  using embryonic stem cells
