i tend to skim over those posts as i find my brain turning to mush trying to interpret as most haven't conquered it. The exception being beth - i read her posts as i don't find them hard to understand at all.

That's because she's not trying to show how superslavey she is because she's doing it. A lot of people who talk or write in third person have one hell of a subblier-than-thou attention-seeking subtext: "See? No 'I' in that sentence! Could I have double-plus approval now please?" Quiet self-confidence is a lot more appealing than strident subbliness.

another thing about Beth is that when she types it out, for some reason it seems to flow more naturally than when I see others doing it.. odd, given the limitations of pixels, but still, thats how I perceive it.

Justin finds it intresting that in a BDSM context it appears to be almost exclusively the slave that speaks of themself in third person. When watching the movie Queen Elizabeth, Justin remembers that the queen would frequently refer to herself in third person. Particularlly when she wanted to emphasis the point that she was the queen. She would say things like, "the queen has decided that she wants you to do such and such." Justin remembers this because the whole group watching the movie thought it rather strange and even arrogant. It seems to just reinforce and remind the listner of the speakers roll. It could work for either Master or slave, but for the most part it just sounds awkward and if not prepared for it causes the listner to have to stop and go wait but that is you that your talking about.

Merc, I was actually thinking about your beth's use of the terminology - in my limited exposure here, for whatever reason, I don't find her usage stilted or "put on" - her sentences flow and read naturally, as though what she is expressing is what she thinks / feels / how she truly identifies - it doesn't feel like she's stopping and correcting herself as she goes along.

You should talk to her sometime, Greedy

. The third person speech is there, but it's sounds so natural that you really don't notice unless you are listening for it. As has been said, few can really pull third person off because too often it comes out sounding/ reading as forced or fake. Beth is one of the few who makes the meaning of her words come through, because it doesn't get tangled in the awkward phrasing, inconsistencies, or odd pauses that tend to make it so annoying when some people try to use it.

Absolutely. In person, she's one of the most authentic and thoroughly natural people you could ever hope to meet. They both are, for that matter, but in Beth's case, I agree with you that unlike probably anyone else I've ever spoken with, she makes that 3rd-person convention sound more natural and more comfortable than I could ever have imagined anyone doing. I think it says a hell of a lot about how fer-real both of them are.

Maybe that's the thing. For all the times it's been pointed out that we can't 'hear' sarcasm, get tone inflection from the written word, how online lacks this or that, so many of us can 'hear' beth. Kind of a cool concept when you think about it.

A question for you, LadyPact ... does your clip speak in third person on the boards? I know I've read his posts, but never recall stumbling over what he was saying, but you implied earlier in this thread that he does third person speak. And honestly, I'd forgotten Beth does it as well even though I read her thoughts almost daily. That's what I meant earlier about so few people can do it with elegance ... but the ones who do, handle it with grace.

No, clip does not participate in third person speak. What he does or will do is follow the caps writing that so many people say will annoy them. Part of that is he does not capitalize his own pronouns, while Mine are (example there). Also, if he's referring to our dynamic, he will use the slash that so many people say they skip over.

Whether people like it or not isn't the issue to Me. What matters is that it's effective for him. I mean no offense to anyone here, but what works in our dynamic is more important to Me than other people's likes or dislikes.

I have had boys who did participate in third person speech. One in particular when he was in a certain mind space. In a way, it was like hearing the submissive he was offering himself to Me. It was something he would slip into when he was feeling the authority he was transferring to Me. Not the canned, robotic way it can seem to come across when it isn't felt fully. In fact, it wasn't a habit he realized he had until I called his attention to it.

I love it when manthing refers to himself in third person. It affects Me much the same way as hearing him say 'Ma'am' in that certain inflection that always makes My heart skip a beat.

It heightens My sense of Dominance, and helps differentiate between routine conversation and BDSM innuendo.

When he speaks to Me as a supplicant, I respond instantaneously in a very visceral way.

Ordinary conversation about mowing the lawn or the work he is doing, when spoken from the first person perspective, doesn't get My motor running, (although I'm always interested in him and in our conversations).

By contrast, if we're grocery shopping or talking about mowing the lawn or replacing a lightbulb, and he suddenly injects self depricative third party references to himself into the conversation, it instantly gets My motor running and turns My thoughts to more fascinating activities even as our inane conversation continues.

If I were a man I'm sure I could describe My pavlovian visceral response as one that 'makes Me walk around all day with a chubby!' Does a swollen clit accompanied by xrated mental videos of BDSM sessions suddenly running through My brain qualify as a 'chubby'? If so, then you can pretty well understand My response.

If manthing talks to Me from third person perspective in public, it's even more delicious. Like Merc, I take sadistic pleasure in watching the faces of the adult men or women who might overhear our conversation and look at Me with derision or contempt. The women usually glance at Me in admiration or with a sense of wonder, anyway.

I wouldn't want a child to overhear that kind of communication, though, on any level, so it has to have limits in public.

I used to get the crap beaten out of me by a former dominant friend of mine because I used to do the third person thing all the time (cause I knew it drove her nuts...she was a dominant friend, not my dominant, except when I finally pissed her off enough to turn her into my temporary dominant. :) )

I used to do it in online games all the time with characters I created who were really dumb characters. After awhile, people get annoyed, so I stopped doing it.
