Hey Bam, that's not the door! By LIISA O'NEILL

It looks like President Obama hasn't gotten acquainted to his White House surroundings. On the way back to the Oval Office Tuesday, the President approached a paned window, instead of the actual door -- located a few feet to his right.

Obama's auto faux pas leads to history lesson Posted document.write(niceDate('2/25/2009 10:55 PM'));2/25/2009 10:55 PM |
By James R. Healey, USA TODAY President Obama, who will decide the fate of struggling Detroit automakers, may need to brush up on his industry history. In promising support in his speech to Congress Tuesday, he said, "I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it." Actually, history — and the U.S. Library of Congress — credits Germany. "It's a fact that Daimler invented the car," says Han Tjan, U.S. spokesman for the German automaker. "If someone says the U.S. invented the car, either it's an incomplete statement or sloppy research." Daimler traces its roots to Germans Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler. The Library of Congress and other histories credit Benz with the first internal combustion-powered car, a three-wheeler, in 1885. Daimler and partner Wilhelm Maybach fielded a four-wheeler in 1886. Their operations merged into Daimler-Benz, now Daimler.

I think that calling the GOP a cartoon is outrageous and I am not alone in this. Mitt Romney was so upset at the very idea that he hit himself in the head with a frying pan until little birdies flew around his head, blew steam out of his ears with steam whistle sound and said "You're dithpicable!"

MasterShake69 -> RE: GOP becoming a cartoon (3/11/2009 9:31:18 PM)

Thanks for clearing that up MasterShake....

TheHeretic -> RE: GOP becoming a cartoon (3/11/2009 9:48:57 PM)

      Since this thread got started with a bit of commentary, it only seems fair to bring in a bit from the other side.

Pat Buchanan, writing about one of the other times the obits were being written for the Repubs

     But hey, enjoy the party.

slvemike4u -> RE: GOP becoming a cartoon (3/11/2009 10:09:46 PM)

Well damm Rich it is one hell of  a party,what with all the gnashing and grinding of teeth being done by the far right.

TheHeretic -> RE: GOP becoming a cartoon (3/11/2009 10:17:37 PM)

          This is nothing, Mike.  Now George Bush II, he had people being diagnosed.  Hell, the entire boom in anti-depressants probably had his name on it.

     Refresh your memory

slvemike4u -> RE: GOP becoming a cartoon (3/11/2009 10:30:29 PM)

Rich not for nothing,but like a large portion of the population I am striving mightily....to forget Bush II...the last thing I want to do is refresh my memory,shit bad enough I had to live thru it once.

TheHeretic -> RE: GOP becoming a cartoon (3/11/2009 10:56:09 PM)

      Then hope we haven't left the frying pan for the fire, Mike.

   One Big Ass Mistake, America...   It might be spot on.  Time will tell.

slvemike4u -> RE: GOP becoming a cartoon (3/11/2009 11:12:27 PM)

So it is your heartfelt opinion that Bush left us in such a bad situation....that one big ass mistake by Pres. Obama could mean the whole ball of wax.Way to go Bush and Co. we dangle over the precipice and Rich and I agree it's your fault......

MarsBonfire -> RE: GOP becoming a cartoon (3/12/2009 5:31:53 AM)

I dont think Iraq was ever about oil.  While Afghanistan was a legit secular war prosecuted by the US government against terrirosts, Iraq was more of a religious war prosecuted by politicians elected by the extreme Christian element against muslims. It was religious empire building, that is until those puppets got voted out. I will say that the erroneous premise of oil revenues paying for reconstruction was more of a 'grand enabler'.

As for Newt, I dont have many negative feelings, except to say he is a bit tarnished by his previous marriage to K Street.

You do lose me on the social conservative issues of abortion, gay marriage, stem cells, and the like.  None of this nonsense would have ever made it into the agenda of a Goldwater or a Taft, nor should it have ever entered into the agenda of ANY republican. I dont have a problem with spiritual politicans, but I flatly reject any politician who runs on spiritual issues. If they are so obsessed with spiritual issues, then they need to become a priest and not a politican.

As for patriotism and support of the military, the country should inspire it based on the actions of its leaders, rather than demand compliance to the ideal from those who disagree.  If the right is making patriotism a huge issue at every turn, then its only because our actions failed to legitimately inspire it.  You cant legislate patriotism any more than you can legislate morals. The republicans need to wake up, and stop wasting that energy.

Newt writes some great alternative history novels DD,so at least he's good for something.

Lorr47 -> RE: GOP becoming a cartoon (3/12/2009 12:31:37 PM)

David Brooks' Opinion entitled "Taking a depression seriously" (in our local paper on 3/12/09 from New York Times News Service)criticizes the Democrats as being wrongheaded but also criticizes his republican party as "totally misguided" and its actions "completely inappropriate."  In his opinion all the republicans want to do is yell "no" rather than propose viable alternatives.  There is a cartoon aspect underlying republican action.  They yell and scream without proposing anything and then pat themselves on the back at what a good job they are doing.  However, people are beginning to view republican rhetoric as counter productive. I just heard a 17 year old girl call them obstructionists and not patriots because they have not come to the nation's aid in a time of need.  The last 5 economists I have read said that the stimulus package was too small and  said that tax cuts are near useless as stimulus..  The trickle down theory is being rejected by virtually everyone except die hards.  Keep this action up and when and if the republicans ever come up with a good idea, no one will believe them or even listen.  I would welcome the destruction of the republican party, but perhaps not right now when we should all be working together.

Sad thing is I have seen proposals from the Republicans on how they feel it should be handled.  Just because there are those trying to claim they aren't doesn't mean they aren't...it's just easier to paint them as the bad guys by claiming "They don't wanna work with us!"

It's in large part the Republicans' own fault...after so many years of fiscal irresponsibility, it's hard to take them seriously when they try and push fiscal responsibility...but on the other hand...when you feel so strongly that the plan in place now is a bad idea, and have good reason to back it up as to why it's a bad idea, what else can you do?  Either support what you think is wrong, or get called "obstructionists" for trying to stick to your guns?  They're in a lose/lose position right now.

David Brooks proposed four points that would bolster the republicans in the future.  However, Brooks does not expect them to change course.  Democrats are burdened by Pelosi and Reed but republicans have O'Connell, Boehner and Shelby.  I think it was last week that Shelby became unglued about earmarks.  He tore at the democrats for the earmark situation.  Then, Monday they caught up to Shelby as being on the high end on the earmark spectrum and he said "yes I have a lot of earmarks in there, but they are good earmarks."  Being what Buchanan has labeled a "Toyota Republicans"  I wonder whether any of his earmarks are for Japan.

I have no real desire to speculate on Goldwater or Taft, but every Republican President since ROE has been strongly anti-abortion.

I think there were several reasons for Iraq- defiance, worldwide intelligence of WMD, Pres Hussein (theirs, not ours) tried to kill GHWB- but I see no evidence that religious beliefs played a part. In fact I rather see the opposite. No true believer (except, I suppose, a Buddhist) believes that a love of freedom trumps religious conviction. Religious beliefs in fact constrain personal freedom. Yet GWB fails to see that Islam and Western-style freedoms are completely incompatible.

Finally, all law (including, say, those against insider trading, fraud, incest, and murder) enforces morality.

MasterShake69 -> RE: GOP becoming a cartoon (3/13/2009 1:20:44 PM)

i think gerald ford was pro choice.

MarsBonfire -> RE: GOP becoming a cartoon (3/13/2009 4:01:51 PM)

G. Ford was also against the US engaging in political assasination... but it looks like Cheany (who used to be part of the Nixon/Ford cabinet) didn't get the message on THAT either...
