The former Big Brother contestant is understood to have said her goodbyes to her young sons, Bobby, five, and Freddy, four.

Her friend and publicist Max Clifford said Jade was under sedation and spent much of Saturday and Sunday sleeping but smiled when she saw her children and was "briefly conscious" of their presence.

If you're in Britain today and in touch with the media no doubt you will have heard or read about Jade Goody, the 27 year old former Big Brother celebrity who is terminally ill with cancer and about to die. We are being given daily reports and articles, aided by her friend and publicist Max Clifford.

Meanwhile nothing is mentioned of those who don't happen to be celebrities who are terminally ill with cancer.

What do you think? Thoughts, comments, opinions..

Morning Stella,
Yeah this whole thing has left me cold.  I understand her desire to take care of her kids this way, but mostly it is sad.  The one thing I hope comes out of this is cancer awareness for younger people.  If a young woman sees what is happening to Jade and takes better care of herself because of it then it will be a good thing.
thanks for the topic.

PeonForHer -> RE: Jade 'says goodbyes to family' (3/16/2009 6:42:41 AM)

Hi Stella - good to see you . . .

To me, this is one of those occasions when I think that the muck, tat, drivel and general tawdriness of the showbiz world can produce something good - namely, awareness of cancer.  I wish we didn't live in a world in which "celebrities" are seen as so absurdly more important than we ordinary humans - but I'm at the stage now where I think that this is like wishing for different weather.

kittinSol -> RE: Jade 'says goodbyes to family' (3/16/2009 6:51:51 AM)

Hi Stella . Apparently it is her decision, but I don't think I would choose to die quite so publicly. The daily images that depict her progressing agony are beyond voyeuristic.

MadAxeman -> RE: Jade 'says goodbyes to family' (3/16/2009 6:56:46 AM)

Apparently more young women are asking for smear tests now.

i agree.
But i can't get past how on earth anyone can say their goodbyes to a 4 and 5 yr old. I tear up just thinking about it

Phoenixpower -> RE: Jade 'says goodbyes to family' (3/16/2009 7:03:52 AM)

With me being on a placement in a hospice it does not interest me much as it is part of the job in this placement that dead bodies are carried outside far too often and doesn't matter what age they are...I personally can't quite believe that she got "so famous" for stupid comments on a stupid big brother show, but well, when that's how the society is those days...if I would be in her shoes....well, I don't know what I would be doing as you never know it until you actually ARE in such a situation, therefore I see it as the last part she could do for her kids, which is fair enough when the media is so stupid to pay for it to cover it as they have enough stupid audience to buy it and simply hope that it will be well managed for them.

ukromanticmaster -> RE: Jade 'says goodbyes to family' (3/16/2009 7:09:56 AM)

If she can save just 1 life in doing what she is doing then fair play
but to me i couldnt die so publicly
but i have my fingers crossed for her

There's nothing wrong with making people aware of cervical cancer. I'm just not sure what there is to gain for anyone in depicting this young woman's agonising death in such a way. I wouldn't be surprised if Max Clifford was her publicist.

He is.. This is the bit which irls me especially.. I have got nothing against raising public awareness for something so terrible as cancer.. but it's Max Clifford's attempt trying to make Goody out to be someone who she isn't - an icon.

This to me has something similar to the deification of the British press of Princess Diana after she died when less than a few weeks before her unfortunate death they were slagging her off.

kittinSol -> RE: Jade 'says goodbyes to family' (3/16/2009 10:53:42 AM)

Thanks Stella...so it is Clifford that's behind this... it doesn't surprise me. I think it's absolutely tragic - all these vultures flying over her, and she's not even dead [>:] .

Hey Kittinsol.  We rarely disagree on subjects, but I wanted to just  the information that Max Clifford took on Jade Goody because he wanted to help her promote cancer awareness.  His wife died from cancer and he was diagnoised with cancer last year.  Yes, sometimes it is media frenzy.  But everyone has their reasons at times.

I disagree.  She is an icon.  There are plenty of people who view her as one, even before this occured.  She may not be one to you, but for those whom identify with her, she has her iconic status.  And as I said before, clifford has his reasons behind taking this on, as well as being a family friend of Jade.

I hear you, the.dark (nice to see you, by the way:-) , and I agree that raising awareness is a positive thing. However, I also know that public relations are never in the business of altruism for its own sake. There's something in it for Clifford, whether is is cash, or a new image as a haloed do-gooder - what pains me is that his method for raising awareness is absolutely awful for the person he is 'representing'. Personally, I think it stinks... He could have 'raisen awareness' with much more respect for his 'client'.

RCdc -> RE: Jade 'says goodbyes to family' (3/16/2009 12:32:41 PM)

Maybe he could have.  However Jade has been pretty open that she wants to raise awareness, but has been really frank that she is mainly doing this because she is going to die and she wants to secure the future of her sons.  She hasn't shyed away from the fact that she is also in this for the money and placing it in trust for her boys.

Clifford is a bit of an advertising sleaze, however he was really open about his own prostate cancer and the death of his wife.  And he does a huge amount of fund raising in public and in private.

ChainGoddess -> RE: Jade 'says goodbyes to family' (3/16/2009 12:53:41 PM)

Max Clifford is, I believe also Godfather to one of Jade Goody's sons.
I must say, until recently I never much cared for the lady,  but my heart breaks for her and her two lovely little boys.  This is so tragic.
Apparently some internet sites are placing bets on when she will pass away.  It's all so dreadfully sad.

kdsub -> RE: Jade 'says goodbyes to family' (3/16/2009 12:57:17 PM)

I'm all for cancer awareness but I don’t think we need to see someone die publicly to get the point across.

We all know someone that has died from this disease we don’t need this type of spectacle.

Think of it…If you had her form of cancer would you rather see hope… or death and dieing. Would her situation provide comfort and that all-important “hope” when fighting this disease?

We don’t need to be scared into giving.

But I think they are doing it with good intentions…I just see no use in it.

God bless her and her family.

This to me has something similar to the deification of the British press of Princess Diana after she died when less than a few weeks before her unfortunate death they were slagging her off.

That sprang to mind when I read your first post.  A few days after Diana died, a large piece of graffiti appeared on a wall near me that read "People Di Every Day".   I, for one, certainly took the point.  Things went . . . well, looney, as I'm sure you know.

But I don't think Jade Goody's been deified:- just turned into a symbol - an advert, if you will.  I don't think anyone sees her as any kind of demi-goddess as some did (and still do) Princess Di.
