UPSG -> Continents (3/16/2009 1:27:43 PM)

My professor in the Africology department posed this question to us one day.

"The French say there are 5 continents and in the United States we say there are 7 continents, so, who is right and who is wrong, or is the truth in the middle?"

I say 5. But everyone is free to their own opinion.

How many continents are there?

And why is this question in the General section.  We have Off Topic and Polls and Random Stupidity for this.  Oh and I personally say 6.  I guess that doesn't help much.

When tying a woman up I have often wondered this question aloud.  Tis' written on the walls of many a dungeon.

"Slut, How many continents are there?"
"Seven."
"Wrong. Only in America."
Spank.

"Slut, how many continents are there?"
"Five."
"Wrong."
Spank

This game could be fun.

  I personally prefer six - Eurasia, Africa, Australia, North America, South America and Antarctica. But then, no-one's been able to explain the exact difference between a continent and island to me ( how did Australia make the cut, but Greenland get left out? )

I wonder if polyamorists view this question differently...

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Continents (3/16/2009 1:51:52 PM)

When I'm asked (which has been a long time), I answer seven.  Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.

Now I've heard of the other models with only 6, 5, or 4.  But I don't think about it too much.  I can still remember being told that Greenland would be a continent if it was a little further south.

calamitysandra -> RE: Continents (3/16/2009 1:57:51 PM)

In school I learned 5: Asia, Africa, Europe, America, Australia.
Number 6, Antarctica was added a bit later.

But I am not clear why one landmass, Eurasia, gets to be two continents, while the other, America is kept as one.
And the island issue. When is an island an continent?

Oh well, I just go with the "One World" approach.

subrob1967 -> RE: Continents (3/16/2009 2:10:59 PM)

Seeing that every continent is an island[;)] Why wouldn't Australia qualify?

Lordandmaster -> RE: Continents (3/16/2009 2:35:24 PM)

The solution to this problem is easy: "Australia" is not a continent; the continent is "Australia & Oceania."  (Otherwise Polynesia wouldn't be part of any continent at all.)  So Australia is the largest component of the continent Australia & Oceania.  [Aside: I remember being asked back in school which was the largest island in the world, and I said, "Australia!" (which is the correct answer--of course).  The teacher said, "No, what are you talking about, Australia is a continent."  At that point, I was still not too clear on the distinction between "Australia" vs. "Australia & Oceania," so I couldn't point out what a damned fool teacher she was.]

Of course, to some degree, mapping continents is arbitrary.  Where does Central America belong?  It's usually counted as part of Latin America, but not as part of South America.  And where exactly is the border between Europe and Asia?  South of the Urals, it's awfully hard to draw.

How about having a sub with their hands tied behind the back draw a map of the world with a big, fat Sharpie in their mouth?

I can think of better things to make her draw with  than her mouth.
Thinks, tied, kneeling slave girl, paper on floor, where, oh where could I put this "big fat Sharpie?"

Vendaval -> RE: Continents (3/16/2009 3:26:50 PM)

You are missing on the tease & frustration factor for her.

You have a creative mind, Vendaval.

For some reason that image kind of turns me on. I'm not sure whether I like the thought of being the one in the chair watching the drawing or the one down on knees with the fat sharpie in mouth.

There is one...they were once separated at birth...and they're all currently clinging to each other via a bunch of salt water in between.

At school, I learnt there were five continents, but that was in France, so I'm bias. Since moving away from that abysmal little country, I have seen the errors of my ways [8D] .

Fwiw, the National Geographic Society counts seven: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica.

Isn't the NGS American-based [8D] ?And as Steel points out so poetically... all the land on Earth comes  from one big mass of magma. Gorgeous.

Vendaval -> RE: Continents (3/16/2009 7:24:07 PM)

Millions of years ago all the land mass was one big continent that geologist call Pangea which split into Laurasia and Gondwanaland and kept separating thanks to continental drift.
