The solution to this problem is easy: "Australia" is not a continent; the continent is "Australia & Oceania." (Otherwise Polynesia wouldn't be part of any continent at all.) So Australia is the largest component of the continent Australia & Oceania. [Aside: I remember being asked back in school which was the largest island in the world, and I said, "Australia!" (which is the correct answer--of course). The teacher said, "No, what are you talking about, Australia is a continent." At that point, I was still not too clear on the distinction between "Australia" vs. "Australia & Oceania," so I couldn't point out what a damned fool teacher she was.] Of course, to some degree, mapping continents is arbitrary. Where does Central America belong? It's usually counted as part of Latin America, but not as part of South America. And where exactly is the border between Europe and Asia? South of the Urals, it's awfully hard to draw.
