Vendaval -> Nigerian scammer = 19 years in jail + restitution! (3/16/2009 3:25:09 PM)

What's sad about this is that people actually fall for these scams.
But I think that 19 years is a bit much.  I would go with 5 years and full restitution to the victim and being prohibited from having computer access.

"Nigerian student gets 19 years' jail for love scam"

Mon Mar 16, 2009 5:57pm GMT

"LAGOS (Reuters) - A Nigerian undergraduate has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for obtaining $47,000 (33,382 pounds) from an Australian woman by convincing her over the Internet that he was 57 years old, white, and madly in love with her.

Lawal Adekunle Nurudeen met his victim on the Internet in 2007 and convinced her that he was a British widower called Benson Lawson. He said he was an engineer working in Lagos whose wife and only child had been killed in a car accident.

"The victim, a 56-year-old woman from Australia, told the convict that she wanted a husband and all the men she had met always disappointed her," said the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria's anti-corruption police.

"The convict, who is married with three children, instantly replied and told the victim she had met her Mr Right ... He sent the picture of a white man to foreclose any suspicions."
The woman sent Nurudeen money for medical treatment and travel costs to visit Australia.

He spent the funds on two plots of land and a Honda Prelude car.

Nigerian confidence tricksters have a long history of extorting money via the Internet through "419" scams, named after the clause that outlaws them in Nigeria's penal code. Many are never caught.

The EFCC said Nurudeen was ordered to pay around $10,000 immediately and a further $250 a month to his victim until the full amount stolen was returned. She would also receive the proceeds of the sale of his land and car."

19 years is not enough for the lives they offten leave in ruin.

Some people end up in very bad ways because the believed these scams. I would like to see this person be required to spend one full year helping each person they scammed get their lives back together.

19 years in a Nigerian prison Steel ,and your not sure if it's enough. While I deplore the crime, and believe this woman to be despicable.....19 years is an awful harsh sentence.Damm ,seems pretty draconian to me.

Disagree, strongly. Sentencing is largely used as a deterrent. In this/these case(s):

1. The fraud is essentially worth many years of comfortable living for the scammer.
2. The chance of being caught and convicted is minimal.
3. It is likely that this is one of hundreds of frauds successfully perpetrated by this offender.
4. The crime is simple and nearly risk-free to commit: anybody with Internet access and gall can give it a go, no chance of being sought out and avenged upon (grotesque grammar, I know) by the victim or family/friends.

Internet fraud is laughably under-sentenced. I'd think 15-20 years is more appropriate for a malicious spammer. Somebody who uses a fake romantic or humanitarian appeal to bilk the most charitable among us? Your funeral should be held in the prison where you die. People should be terrified of the consequences.

Any time a convict hears his sentence and thinks he has received a fair deal, that sentence is woefully inadequate.

I believe the punishment shoud fit the crime. If the crime was not caught what kind of life do you think the woman would have had?

I believe the Criminal should live the life that would be equally as deplorable as what he expected the woman he scammed to live.

As for my views on punishment I will say simply this, I also live up to my own expectations, I would be willing to pay my own versions of Penalties should I commit certain crimes, including the loss of life for crimes that take anothers life.

But these are my opinions and views only they do not have to be shared or popular they are mine regardless.

Lonely hearts scams are nothing new.  Plenty of homegrown con artists are robbing lonely men and women.  Before the internet, they did it through the mail.  Shit, you have inmates writing letters in prison to poor saps so they can get money put into their commissary accounts.  I don't know why Nigerian flim-flam men get so much attention for this.

Vendaval -> RE: Nigerian scammer = 19 years in jail + restitution! (3/16/2009 3:49:14 PM)

Keeping a criminal in jail is not free to any society.  I doubt many of us are up on the intricacies of Nigerian law but at some point getting the criminal back to work and paying taxes is better than the rest of the country paying for their room and board.  This applies to non-violent offenders specifically.

Steel,I can respect your views on punishment.,and I certainly didn't mean to imply any sympathy for this bitch.
But 19 years is a very long time.

I don't know whether to be in awe of this dude or feel real bad for this woman.

Tragic yet interesting that kind of doe can be given out in the context of that kind of situation.

You are right, slave boy.  How many guys sent for mail order brides that never arrived?

What is interesting is that the Nigerian scams hit the UK and US the hardest.  Would you send money to a total stranger who claimed to have found Saddam's family stash or cash from the ruins of 9/11?

"Nigerian scams cost Britons millions, says study"

Mon Nov 20, 2006 8:24am ES
By Matthew Jones

LONDON (Reuters) - Internet scams, credit card fraud and money laundering operations originating in Nigeria cost Britons millions of pounds a year, a report on Monday said.

The problem has become so prevalent that Nigerians in Britain are in danger of being widely seen as corrupt, the study from the Chatham House think-tank added.
But neither Britain nor Nigeria are taking the problem seriously, it said.

"Private-sector fraudsters and corrupt public officials and British companies have profited from the general Western focus on terrorist financing, drugs and people trafficking," it said.

Britons now closely associate the African country with the so-called "advance fee" scam whereby people are contacted by e-mail and offered the opportunity to earn millions of dollars.

The recipient is told they will earn a commission in exchange for aiding the sender in transferring funds.

The victim has to send bank details or even cash, ostensibly to help pay off corrupt officials, and then the victim's bank account is stripped.

"The frauds are often mischievously inventive and run on an industrial scale," the report said.

Among the variations, victims have been offered the chance to benefit from a share of Saddam Hussein's family savings and even money "looted" from the rubble of the World Trade Center after the September 11 attacks.

According to the Chatham House report, an analysis by Dutch-based consultancy Ultrascan concluded the total losses from advance fee fraud scams to British companies and individuals in 2005 was $520 million (275 million pounds).

Only the United States was worse off, losing $720 million that year. Nigeria was not the only source of such scams."

I do feel bad for the woman and know that receiving her money back over the years will not replace the romantic dreams she had.

19 years is a little much, IMO. I rememeber a case a few years back of a Nigerian woman who internet scammed millions of dollars from a South American Bank, Brazil I believe. Anyhoo, it was the biggest scam in Nigerian history, was in all the news.
All this woman got was 2 or 3 years, and restitution. Which is wayyy too little for her crime, IMO.  So it looks like lop sided justice to me.

What we really need to do is to cut internet comms with most African countries especially Nigeria.
Every few months after marking a bunch of those messages as "spam" I contact Yahoo and ask them why they still continue to allow comms from African countries.

That would give a whole new meaning to the tag of "The Dark Continent".

Absolutely out  of proportion. And this made me laugh: lying on the quality of the goods by pretending that he was white? Wooo hooo, that's baaad [8|].

The people who fall for these scams are idiots. The scammers are scumbags: but they don't deserve twenty years in jail. Like I said... completely disproportionate to the crime. I think some people here have no idea what jail entails, especially in Nigeria [:(] .

SteelofUtah -> RE: Nigerian scammer = 19 years in jail + restitution! (3/16/2009 6:39:57 PM)

Yes I do, and No that does not change my opinion.

Criminals need to FEAR committing the crime. I think Scammers in America should spend time in Nigerian Prisons.

You underestimate my particular distaste for the Criminal Brood.

Lonely Hearts Predators are the worst of them all becase in addition to stealing Money they also steal hope and how do you repay in restitution someone's hope?

Ninteen years isn't bad, you'd get that for robbery here in S. Carolina.

Call me cynical, but please... the people who let themselves be scammed like that have a Hallmark's card in place of a brain.

PS: and that's being nice.

Have to agree. I can't believe that they get away with it as most are so easy to spot.

Master had an email from a young woman here last weekend. She was in Dover she said, which is about 70 miles outside of London. She wanted to be his slave and would come to him if he gave her the money for her fare. This one had even worked out that people like to hear that they are for real and gave him a phone number to call. As he loves to wind people up he called and it was obvious from the ring tone that the call was routed out of the country. Telling her he would send her the money for her fare got her pretty excited until he pointed out that a train from Dover to London costs £10. Suddenly the phone went dead and no more Yahoo chat. Funny that eh?

I do not deny that "Most" are so worked up that they forget to to cash a reality check or two, but Lonely Hearts are good honest and wholesome people who simply want to believe that Someone ANYONE loves them, and then they meet that someone and that someone is everything that ever wanted and hoped for, they are just in a situation that cannot be helped. The person realizes that they can have this perfect dream, this thing they always wanted, this thing they dreamed about, they can finally have the perfect picture and they are willing to go to any lengths not to let it slip away from them.

The Person on the other end KNOWS what they are doing, they know how fragile these people are and that is what makes them easy marks. Being an Easy Mark does not mean you DESERVE to be mistreated it just means you want something more than you are protecting yourself from.

This is why I hate them so much. I am a Dick, but I admit that, I put on social faces to remain civil but I make sure it is known that I am human. These people just want to be loved and because of that they are abused.

How is this their fault? I guess next Rape Victims are to blame because they wore lipstick, or Abused Wives are to Blame because they should have known when to shut up? Yes Lonely Hearts aren't always the brightest crayon in the box but that isn't an excuse to color them worthless.
