What does all this have to do with the OP?  If you want to start a thread about the issues you encounter being Black, Catholic and short please do so

Which is why I ended up abandoning my own thread, it got exhausting trying to wade through the posts and I hadn't the energy to try and reign the hijacking in.

"Black," Catholic, and short. That's what you call being tripled fuck. At least in the United States - in Brazil I would fit right in (average height is lower).

But my point is, he doesn't have the authority to make that proclamation a standing law.  As much as the Pope doesn't want AIDS infested people using condoms, I doubt his wants are going to have an effect on things as they've been going on.  At least, he hasn't to this point.

And my point is that for devout Catholics the Pope's word is law, the law of the Church, and they will abide by it even to their own detriment.

slvemike4u -> RE: No Condoms In Africa, says the Pope (3/22/2009 6:46:40 AM)

Rule,I might be missing something here ....but are devout Catholics engaging in high risk sexual practices in great numbers? If they are so devout are they not following the proscription against pre- and extra marital sex.

Louve00 -> RE: No Condoms In Africa, says the Pope (3/22/2009 6:49:27 AM)

rulemylife, you pointed your point out to me, this is the second time now.  I don't want to get into a huge, off-topic debate about who's life the Pope leads...or who follows the Pope, or anything like that.  But, since you insist on making me comment on your point, consider this.  The pope followers were most likely NOT buying condoms for AIDS infested areas in Africa to begin with.  So, how potent do you honestly think the proclomation is going to be?

FullCircle -> RE: No Condoms In Africa, says the Pope (3/22/2009 6:59:28 AM)

Who buys them is one issue and who will use them is another. Some ignorant men in Africa think HIV can be cured by having sex with a virgin so if credible western religious figures say condoms are not good are you going to use them?

What poorly educated people need from the west is a consistent message regarding sexual health.

slvemike4u -> RE: No Condoms In Africa, says the Pope (3/22/2009 7:14:37 AM)

Full do you beleive that education will come from the Pope?

When the Pope visits places does a crowd form? He has influence in many places whether or not her deserves it mike.

In Cameroon's capital of Yaounde, a clapping, swaying crowd of 40,000 welcomed Benedict to a sports stadium -- his first occasion as pope to be among a great crowd of faithful in Africa, where the church is growing the fastest.

slvemike4u -> RE: No Condoms In Africa, says the Pope (3/22/2009 7:24:59 AM)

Yes Full, but aren't these crowds made up of the devout .In the case of the devout one would think they are living a life that does not include casual sexual partners.
I'm not addressing whether or not he deserves the attention....just pointing out that those who would listen to him...aren't using or likely to use condoms in any event.

Yeah, sorry about that.

I had forgotten I already made one response to it while I was reviewing the thread.

But the point is not who is buying the condoms but who is going to use them.

If the Pope is condemning their use many who are devout believers will not use them strictly on that basis.

Just like many accept other religious beliefs like the Earth is only 6,000 years old and evolution is fiction.

Rule ,this in a nut shell illustrates my surprise at the outrage. Are the devout, living their lives in such devout ways, following all the other teachings of the church....engaging in high-risk extra marital sex?The Church proscribes the use of condoms or any method of contraception anyway.

The problem with that argument mike is it assumes every catholic in the west has never had sex before marriage or failed in other ways. The difference is one society has the facts to make the decisions about the pros and cons of sex before marriage and the other is being fed selective information that really has nothing to do with the mechanisms of HIV transfer. So it is confusing the whole issue of sexual health by adding in moral arguments that the person can't separate from the facts about how HIV is spread.

My point: people occasionally fail when trying to follow the strict doctrine of their faith but it should not be a death sentence, not when it isn't for another society that can just go confess in the box thing about it.

These people will also be spreading the word to other people not there and what is the main message you want them to transfer?

I don’t know if this is true but one news report I’ve read even states the Pope said condoms increase HIV spread, this is just wholly not what we know in the west to be true so how can we stomach people being mislead like this?

Of course they should, but that's what we have Confession for.

We can screw up all we want, say ten Hail Marys, and its like it never happened.

Except with HIV those ten Hail Marys won't cure it.

And what the Pope is doing is relying on those prohibitions against sex outside of marriage while ignoring the reality of human nature, at the cost of the lives of those who are too indoctrinated in the faith to see to their own well-being.

What's the phrase?

Cafeteria Catholics, which most of us are, we pick and choose what to be devout about while rationalizing what Church principles we ignore.

Unfortunately, what the Pope's rant of the day is usually will become the priority.

slvemike4u -> RE: No Condoms In Africa, says the Pope (3/22/2009 7:58:19 AM)

You both make excellent points but given the Church's stance on these issues(pre-marital sex, contraceptives)do either of you,or for that matter can anyone, expect the Pope to say anthing other than what he did.It has never been my point to defend his POV ,rather that it is to be expected coming from him.
edited to add.Rule,I don't beleive "cafeteria Catholics are allowing any pronouncement from the Pope to intefere with their sex lives...I know this one isn't.

FullCircle -> RE: No Condoms In Africa, says the Pope (3/22/2009 8:04:45 AM)

Maybe the old phrase 'if you've got nothing positive to say...' should have came to his mind. There are other issues he could have addressed rather than pushing the fidelity/abstinence thing. What this really indicates is the conviction of his beliefs and that makes him a dangerous individual, as he is wrong.

ElectraGlide -> RE: No Condoms In Africa, says the Pope (3/22/2009 8:09:49 AM)

The Pope is always ridiculous, with all the crack pot religious leaders like him out there, I could just never find myself being religious.

Me either, but isn't that the point?

The Church is always stuck in their backward ways, which is why they keep losing active members.

Remember that whole thing about Galileo and the Earth being the center of the solar system?

Nothing has changed for centuries.

The Catholic Church is always two steps behind the times.

Unfortunately I was raised Catholic.  Fortunately most Catholics take whatever the Pope says with grain of salt.  Some are devout but most pick and choose what they will believe.
